The Made in Abyss Binary Star system trailer lays out the game’s structure in more detail. In particular, its two playable narrative modes are explained. “Hello Abyss” mode follows the plot of the anime, and stars Riko. Meanwhile “Deep in Abyss” mode stars a player-created character. Their name is “Aki”, though players can customize this novice “Bell” Cave Raider. Deep in Abyss follows an original story written by Made in Abyss creator Akihito Tsukushi. It’ll involve known characters from the series, though.

The trailer also laid out how players will progress the story in Made in Abyss Binary Star Falling into Darkness. First, they’ll complete quests, which involve exploring the Abyss. Jiruo and the Cave Raider Guild issue most quests.

In keeping with the themes of the series, the Abyss is a dark, dangerous place. Even with adequate supplies, players will suffer from the Curse of the Abyss as they return to base. The curse intensifies the further they descend, and symptoms include vomiting, statistical penalties or bleeding from their orifices. This renders them vulnerable to environmental hazards and monster attacks.

Of course, the risks of Made in Abyss Binary Star are not without rewards. Successful expeditions net relics, which you can sell. Expeditions also reward experience used to level up. New story missions require Abyss exploration to unlock.

Made in Abyss will release on Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PC on September 2, 2022. HIDIVE hosts the anime for streaming in North America. Its second season is airing now.
