Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash Has Online Functionality, Amiibo Support, And More

YouTube channel GameXplain recently got a chance to play the upcoming Wii U title Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash. Here’s a look their hands-on preview video.

Gameplay-wise, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash will feature a control scheme most similar to that of Mario Tennis Open for the Nintendo 3DS, and Chance Shots will also make a return in the newest title.

Ultra Smash brings with it a new mode called Mega Battle in which Toads standing on the sidelines will periodically toss Mega Mushrooms onto the court. If you pick one up, your character will become supersized, and your shots will become faster and more powerful. However, if Mega Battles don’t sound quite like your style, there is an option to switch to Standard mode, which eliminates the Mega Mushrooms, or Simple mode, which eliminates both the Mushrooms as well as Jump and Chance Shots altogether.

In addition, Ultra Smash will have online functionality and will allow you to challenge players from all around the world. Two people can play on the same system and challenge another team online in a Doubles match.

The game will also have amiibo support, and amiibos will function quite similarly to how they did in Super Smash Bros., meaning you will essentially “train” the amiibo to play better and level up. You can then use the data stored in the amiibo to play against it in a match, or have them play alongside you in a Doubles match.

Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash will release for the Wii U in Japan on November 19th, 2015, in North America and Europe on November 20th, and in Australia November 21st.
