Naruto Shippuden: Shinobi Retsuden II tempts with decent looking trailer

This article is over 16 years old and may contain outdated information

I’m still wary about Naruto Shippuden: Shinobi Retsuden II, but this trailer makes it look much better than Naruto: Ninja Destiny. It feels like Tomy scaled Naruto Shippuden: Geiktou Ninja Taisen EX II for the DS mainly because of the super moves. Yes, you can Odama Rasengan your way to victory against Deidara, but that doesn’t guarantee a solid single player experience.

The original storyline and dungeon crawling adventure mode might. In Naruto Shippuden: Shinobi Retsuden II players step into the shoes of the only ninja who can camouflage in Halloween decorations and run around Konoha in 3D, a first for any of Tomy’s Naruto games. This isn’t just a hub world, Naruto Shippuden: Shinobi Retsuden II contains underground mazes to explore. Underground mazes populated with unseen ninja that silently creep behind Naruto. (read: random encounters.) You don’t fight back by picking punch from a menu, Naruto Shippuden: Shinobi Retsuden II utilizes the 3D fighting engine for random battles. This could be a great idea to ameliorate the lack of replay value in the first game. If you want to unlock the 30 characters in the game you will have to spend at least some time dungeon crawling.

Speaking of the characters here is an initial list based on who we’ve seen fighting so far:

Naruto

Sasuke

Deidara

Neji

Sai

Yamato

Rock Lee

Sasori

Sakura

Itachi

Kakashi

Kisame

Gaara

Temari

Guy

Shikamaru

In addition to these there are generic ninja for Naruto to pummel, Chiyo and Kabuto who appear in the story mode. Since Kabuto was playable in Naruto Shippuden: Gekitou Ninja Taisen EX 2, I suspect he will be playable in Naruto Shippuden: Shinobi Retsuden II. Time will if Chiyo will be playable in Naruto Shippuden: Shinobi Retsuden II, which will be another first for Tomy’s take on Naruto fighting games.

Now that you've seen the trailer and know a little more about the game will you give the Shinobi Retsuden series a second chance with the second game?
