Starting on August 11, the Nintendo 3DS will be 10,000 yen ($127) cheaper in Japan. Nintendo is dropping the price of their new handheld down from 25,000 yen ($317) to 15,000 yen ($190). To put that figure in perspective, a Nintendo DSi XL currently retails for 18,000 yen ($229) and Nintendo DSi hardware retails for 15,000 yen ($190).

This is… an aggressive price cut.
Nintendo also announced plans for an overseas price cut between July and September, but did not specify how much they will shave off the 3DS price tag in other regions. A Nintendo DS currently has a suggested retail price of $249.99 in the USA.
Update: Nintendo announced a 3DS price cut in North America. Beginning on August 12, the system will retail for $169.99.
