New Super Mario Bros. 2 was released in Japan last Saturday, and the game sold 407,503 copies over the weekend. Sales tracker, Media Create, say that this was 41.56% of the game’s initial shipment.

That number may seem low, but Nintendo likely shipped excess copies of the game in preparation for upcoming strong demand. Japan’s Obon festival and summer break are both coming up, and will boost sales of the title.

Meanwhile, as we reported earlier in the week, Persona 4: Arena’s launch outsold several other fighting games on the PlayStation 3 in Japan. The PS3 version of the game sold 128,485 copies in its opening week, while the Xbox 360 version sold 9,801 copies.

Media Create say that’s over a 90% sell-through on both platforms. Congratulations, Index/Atlus and Arc System Works.
