Playstation 3 the real deal

Now that Sony’s conference ended we know a lot more about the next Playstation. The system launches in North America on November 17th as part of a simultaneous world wide launch. North America will be able to purchase “clear black” systems at the price of $499 for a PS3 with a 20GB hard drive and $599 for a system with a 60GB hard disc. For the hefty price tag you get a system with a cell processor (PowerPC based core) running at 3.2 Ghz and a 512KB L2 cache with a total floating point performance of 218 GFLOPS. The GPU is 550Mhz with a 1.8TFLOPS floating point performance and supports high definition resolution at 1080p. For memory the system has 256MB of main ram and 256MB of GDDR3 VRAM. Besides the internal hard drive the deluxe ($599) system can read memory sticks (Duo and Pro), SD cards and has support for type I / II compact flash cards. Connectivity wise the PS3 has a gigabit Ethernet card for online play plus 802.1b/g if you have the $599 model. We all know that the PS3 is going to read blue ray discs, which the games are going to be based on. However, we now know that the PS3 reads SACD (super audio CDs) too.

The Playstation 3 controller also went under a huge change. After the backlash of the boomerang design Sony went back to basics and stuck to the standard dual shock design. New to the design is a highly sensitive six-axis sensing system, which picks up three dimension acceleration information. To add this function in vibration feedback was removed since it interferes with the sensor. Like all of the other “next generation” systems the PS3 controller is wireless with the ability to switch to a wired controller with a USB cable.
