Pokémon X And Pokémon Y Introduce Brand New Sky Battles

Recommended Videos

Pokémon X and Pokémon Y have brand new battle features Nintendo and Game Freak revealed this evening at a Pokémon developer discussion in Los Angeles. We’re at the event and have been reporting live, so make sure you catch up with some of what we’ve already covered.

New to Pokémon X and Pokémon Y are sky battles. Only Flying-types or Pokémon with the Levitate ability are capable of participating in these.

We saw a demonstration of a sky battle at the discussion, where a Sky Trainer named Sera was on a cliff and the player, who was on the ground, initiated a battle with her. Sky Trainer Sera whipped out a Noctowl and Talonflame (a new Pokémon—a red bird).

The camera panned animatedly around the fight, going left and even down to the ground, so you could see the battle from the ground looking up. Talonflame used Flame Charge, which is a move where you crash into the enemy and take recoil damage yourself.

Additionally, we noticed that Aerodactyl and Haunter are in the game, too. Haunter used Night Shade and Shadow Ball during the fight. Once the fight was won, the player earned 5,200 money.
