When Puyo Puyo Champions launched, it did so as a more basic Puyo Puyo game. Given that it was designed as an esports version of the game, it was essentially a stripped down version of some of Puyo Puyo Tetris’ modes. However, a free update has added Challenge and Lessons mode.
Sega first announced Challenge and Lessons mode on September 3, 2019, noting the patch would be released on September 4, 2019. After people download the patch, the two modes are available from the main menu. Challenge has an Official Challenge with rules where you go for a high score, a Score Challenge where you are trying for the highest possible score, and a Time Challenge where you are attempting do do well in a limited amount of time. Your performance can be ranked.
Lessons is a more educational section. There will be Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced lessons for people to go through to learn more about Puyo Puyo Champions and its rules. Then, there will be a Problems section where you put what you learned into practice.
Puyo Puyo Champions is available for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. (It is available in Japan as Puyo Puyo Esports.)
