Retrospective: Michael Jackson Moonwalker the arcade game

This article is over 18 years old and may contain outdated information

Sega struck quite a deal when they brought the King of Pop into the video game world. Most people played Moonwalker for the Sega Genesis, but Sega released another version of the game specifically for arcades. You’re still on a quest to save children and stop Mr. Big, but the game is a ¾ perspective beat ‘em up where you can shoot magical bolts of energy from Jackson’s gloved hand. The other skill Jackson has is dance magic that clears all gangsters on the screen after they do a jig. Right before boss battles players can grab Bubbles the monkey, which transforms Michael into a terminator style robot who can shoot lasers. Now if all of this wasn’t strange enough at the end of the game Jackson saves all of the unnamed children then transforms into a plane and is never seen again.

“And the children that he saved?

Well…

They’re smiling, because deep down in their hearts, they know that Michael will return one day to share with them another wondrous and magical adventure.”

A strange ending to the weird five level adventure. Past the jump is an animated image of Jackson’s dance magic.
