Sonic Mania Plus launches in a couple more months and Sega recapped all the new features including a closer look at Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel in the latest batch of screenshots.
First, here’s a look at Might and Ray who were both playable together in the 1993 arcade game SegaSonic the Hedgehog:
Mighty the Armadillo
By pressing the jump button while in mid-jump, Mighty curls up into the ball and performs a ground pound action called the “Hammer Drop.” This can be used to defeat enemies right below, find hidden item boxes inside trees, and more.
Ray the Flying Squirrel
Ray can fly around using the power of wind. By pressing the jump button during a jump, Ray can perform the “Air Glide” that allows him to glide long distances when used skillfully.
Encore Mode
Encore Mode changes up the stage setup placements and color palettes to make it different from what you experienced in the original Sonic Mania to give you a fresh new take.
During Encore Mode you’ll get to switch between characters in the middle of the Zone.
The mode also comes with a brand-new scenario.
Versus Mode Update
With the addition of Mighty and Ray, there are now five playable characters, making it possible for a 4-player VS. Mode. There’s also a new “Time Attack Mode” function that lets you compete against replay ghosts for best times.
Lastly, here’s the limited edition version that includes a two-disc 54-track original soundtrack, a 36-page art book, a Mega Drive-style reversible jacket, and a special box to put everything in. The soundtrack CD will be exclusive to the Japanese release.
In case you missed it, check our previous report for more info from series producer Takashi Iizuka who shared stories on how Mighty and Ray made it into Sonic Mania Plus and more.
Sonic Mania is available on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Sonic Mania Plus releases in the West on July 17, 2018 and in Japan on July 19. It’ll cost 500 yen for fans in Japan with the original Sonic Mania to purchase the “Encore Pack” that comes with everything added in Sonic Mania Plus.
