The DualShock 3 really is the PlayStation 3 controller we should have gotten in the first place. Now that it’s here and rumble is (kind of) back you might be tempted to run out and purchase a DualShock 3. If you’re planning to buy another controller the DualShock 3 is clearly the controller to get, but as of this second support feels limited.

Compared to how PlayStation 2 and PsOne games utilized rumble it feels like developers are just getting their feet wet with the DualShock 3. Only a handful of titles utilize force feedback. Some of them like Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction is light on rumble. The controller shakes when Ratchet gets hit, but that didn’t add much to my enjoyment of the game. Ratchet is fun to play with or without rumble. To be fair Ratchet came out before the DualShock 3 was officially released anywhere in the world. Later games like Devil May Cry 4 and Dark Sector have more powerful vibration effects. Yes, the DualShock 3 works with Dark Sector even though it isn’t on Sony’s list. So are backwards compatible games.

In the future the number of games that will support rumble is bound to grow, but right now the list is slim even if you add import games like Imabikisou to the list.
