SpellBounders is a new cross-genre game from InsaneRoot that features both elements from traditional fantasy RPGs and word games.

SpellBounders borrows a lot of its gameplay from Scrabble. Each player has a set number of word tiles that can be placed on the board to make words. However, instead of earning points by making words, you subtract points from your opponent’s life points. When he or she reaches zero, then game over.

The game currently features five playable characters and each has unique abilities. For example, Lexy the wizard can heal herself, while Sneaktooth the assassin can coat the tiles in poison.

There are also random spells and treasures that can be found by placing your tiles on certain spots on the board. By placing a tile on a spell book, you might activate a shield spell that will protect you from harm, or maybe a spell that will simply damage your opponent.

Currently, SpellBounders only has a multiplayer mode. However, every time I started a match I was paired up with an opponent almost instantly. Everyone I played with were quick to take their turns and allowed for fast moving gameplay. With a sizeable community of players, there hopefully won’t be much of a wait between games or turns at all.

SpellBounders is a free-to-play game for the iOS (currently only iPads).
