Earlier this week an adaptation of Dragon Quest Monster Battle Road came out for mobile phones in Japan and it sticks pretty close to the source material. Dragon Quest Battle Road Mobile retains three on three monster battles like the arcade game, just with lower resolution graphics.

The cell phone edition even uses cards. For an additional fee players can purchase a standard deck (5 cards / 105 yen), a three pack set (17 cards / 315 yen) or a mini pack (2 cards / 52 yen). Yeah, Dragon Quest Battle Road Mobile is big on microtransactions, but if you’re an addict of the arcade game you can avoid buying virtual cards.

Each time you play the arcade version you’re given a physical card, which works with Dragon Quest Monster Battle Road. The card is also compatible in Dragon Quest Battle Road mobile through some neat camera technology. Just take a picture of the card and it’s added to your deck. Some special cards can not be scanned, but this is still a pretty neat solution to link the two games.
