Nintendo and Illumination’s latest promotional clip for the Super Mario Bros Movie uses the theme song from the Super Mario Bros Super Show. The theme appears in a video embedded on the “official website” for Super Mario Bros Plumbing, the business owned by Mario and Luigi in Brooklyn, New York.

The video takes the form of a commercial for SMB Plumbing. Replicating the beats of a self-produced local business advert, the commercial also uses, almost beat for beat, a version of the Super Mario Bros Super Show opening theme.

Starring performers Lou Albano (also known as the pro wrestler The Captain) as Mario and Danny Wells as Luigi, the Super Mario Bros Super Show aired from September through December in 1989. It was the first TV series based on the Mario Bros game series, and involved both live-action and animated segments. The live-action segments starred Albano and Wells playing their role as plumbers in Brooklyn, as well as parodying sitcoms of the era. The animated segments involved the brothers’ adventures in the Mushroom Kingdom, playing alongside Princess Peach (then “Princess Toadstool”), Toad, and Bowser (then just “King Koopa”). The Super Show also featured animated segments based on The Legend of Zelda, which was the birthplace of many older fans impressions of Zelda, Link and the characters in the saga. It’s where Link’s “Well, excuse me, Princess!” catchphrase comes from, too.
