At first glance, the game is similar to the New Super Mario Bros series. However, the new game will revolve around Wonder Flowers, which cause drastic changes to the environment. The reveal trailer showed off wiggling pipes, Mario changing shape in sync with scenery and stampeding enemies, among other things. There will also be multiple playable characters, including a playable Daisy. Mario became an elephant at the end. More details explaining all of this will be revealed at a later date.

This marks the first traditional 2D Mario game since New Super Mario Bros U, released way back in 2012. Since then, there have been two Super Mario Maker games, with added level construction tools. There was also Super Mario Run, an endless runner released for mobile platforms.

The Mario series has also been big in cinemas recently, with The Super Mario Bros Movie making record-breaking profits at the box office.

Super Mario Bros Wonder will release for Nintendo Switch on October 20, 2023. In addition, a Super Mario RPG remake and new game starring Princess Peach are in development.
