Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS has sold more than 2.8 million copies worldwide, Nintendo announced this morning. That figure includes Japan, America, Europe and Australia, and accounts for both retail and download sales.
The vast majority of those sales are obviously from Japan, as Super Smash Bros. for 3DS was released in that region on September 13th, over two weeks prior to every other region. Thus far, the game has sold well over 1.43 million copies in Japan, including both retail and download sales, and was sold out as of two weeks ago.
Doing the math, Smash for 3DS has sold approximately 1.37 million across North America, Europe and Australia, where it was released last week. In North America and Europe, the game was released on October 3rd. Australia saw it a day later on October 4th, so we’re looking at less than a week of sales data for all three territories.
This morning, Nintendo announced that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will be released on November 21st in North America and December 5th in Europe, so it should be interesting to see how sales of the 3DS version hold up, once the Wii U version is available.
