The new gameplay footage appeared as part of the first Sword Art Online Variant Showdown live stream. Specifically, a short battle segment appeared featuring Kirito, Asuna, and Silica fighting against The Gleam Eyes. Players will control one character at a time, and can switch between the three characters in the party. Yui will also act as a guide for the party. There will also be a battle royale game mode in which you can fight against other players. However, the battle royale mode is still in development.

There are three different character types: Attackers, Defenders, and Supporters. Attackers specialize in attacks. Defenders are good at absorbing damage and continuously attacking. Supporters enhance other characters’ abilities and can debuff enemies. These characters will have access to three character skills: Attack skills, Recovery skills, and Support skills. By switching between characters at the correct time and stringing together attacks, players can deal greater damage to enemies.

Furthermore, each character can enter an Awakening state. In this state, character skills will have no cooldown timer, and players will be able to switch between characters at any time. Once awakened, the character will also have access to a powerful Finishing skill.
