News about The Last of Us Part II is coming from its September 24, 2019 preview event, and its provided details about what people can expect from Ellie’s next adventure. To start, it is actually shipping out on two Blu-rays. In addition, there will be no The Last of Us Part II multiplayer.
When speaking to The Telegraph, Naughty Dog Vice President Neil Druckmann brought up The Last of Us Part II’s size and scope. The direction of the game meant it ended up being so big, it needed more room and a greater focus on its campaign. He said, “[The Last of Us Part II]’s so ambitious the game doesn’t fit on one BluRay, it’s on two discs. It’s so ambitious that we actually decided to make it single player only. There’s no multiplayer in The Last of Us Part 2. We wanted to take all of the resources to make this the biggest game we’ve ever done.” This also came up in an interview USGamer conducted with Lead Game Designer Emilia Schatz, who said, “We’re focusing on a single-player experience, so we’re just making a single-player game for this.”
Back in June 2018, it was suggested that The Last of Us Part II would have the same sort of Factions multiplayer as The Last of Us. Naughty Dog Co-Director Kurt Margenau told Gamespot, “Multiplayer is coming back. We’re not going to talk details yet about what form that takes, but we can confirm there will be multiplayer.” However, in June 2019, Reddit user Toochuy pointed out that the Days of Play PlayStation 4 box said, “Marvel’s Spider-Man, Days Gone, God of War, and The Last of Us Part II do not support online multiplayer.”
The Last of Us Part II will come to the PlayStation 4 on February 21, 2020.
