China-based Erotes Studio has released the English version of its visual novel MayJasmine EP01 What is God? on Steam.

It takes place during the time of Indonesia’s riots in 1998, which were triggered by economic problems, and led to violence towards ethnic Chinese in the country. The riots are what also led to Indonesia’s second president to resign after 31 years.

You follow a Taiwanese accountant called Yu-Chen He after he finds a job in Indonesia through a friend called Zu-Jin. From this position, Yu-Chen He encounters a number of characters with different ethnic backgrounds, including:

“Yu-Chin Wan, the little daughter of Zi-Jin, questions where her home truly is, and her self identity. Pin-Hong Miao, a going-to-be mother, a Chinese teacher, contributes her love to all future generation. Melati, the little girl from local Indonesian family, best friend of Yu-Chin, has her biggest wish as world peace.”

The Chinese version of What is God? came out earlier this year. The rest of the trilogy, MayJasmine Episode02 What‘s Justice? and MayJasmine Episode03 What‘s Love?, are yet to be released.
