Watch: Concerto Gate’s turn based battles

This article is over 17 years old and may contain outdated information

Unlike all of the other MMORPGs on the market Square-Enix’s Concerto Gate is modeled after traditional JRPGs. You don’t have an action oriented combat system where the focus is on buffing up a tank character. Instead battles are turn based where players stand and enemies stand on a ten square grid. You select attacks and then watch the battle take place like an offline RPG. To add an additional element of strategy spells have varying range on the ten square grid. Also enemies don’t appear on screen so you don’t need another player to pull monsters. Encounters are random, which explains why the player in the video is running around in circles after fights.

What’s your take on Concerto Gate? Do you think a MMORPG with turn based battles is a good idea? Or does WOW have the perfect formula?
