The Pioneers: Ted Woolsey. A Worthy Read.

suicide6.gifSome of you may not know who Ted Woolsey is; but to those of us who’ve come to love Final Fantasy VI (III at the time it was released here in the States), Ted Woolsey is better known as the man who translated Final Fantasy VI into English in 30 days and, until the release of Final Fantasy VI Advance with an enhanced script that manages to blend in both Woolsey’s translation and the original Japanese dialogue into one beautiful new translation, provided many of us with a literary experience we’ll never forget…if you’d like to call reading the text a literary experience.

Square-Haven has an interesting piece on Ted Woolsey titled The Pioneers: Ted Woolsey that pretty much talks about Ted Woolsey and the many translations he’s done for Square and the problems he encountered while doing so. If you’re interested in learning a little more about the way Woolsey went about localizing some of the greatest games you’ve ever played in the 16-bit days from Squaresoft (Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger anyone?), then you should really check this piece out.

Fascinating article, I knew there was limitation in size for the SNES cartridge, but didn’t realize it played such a huge role in restricting the script’s length.

Barret’s “#&@%” in FF 7 was funny & strange at the same time :).. I was wondering why they had to resort to that, whether it was due to translators’ incompetence or done on purpose to be comedic. How I miss Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, FF VI, and Mario RPG, good ol’ square-soft.

Now someone needs to grab Dan Owsen and pick apart his mind for the amazing translation job he did on Earthbound.

I’ll be honest, after playing Advance, there are times when it’s pretty clear Woosly had a better script.

The complete change in the Opera, well, that’s just for an attatchment.
“They say I learn slow, but I eat fast” – Ultros, Woosley’s translation
“They say I learn slow, but at least I never give up” – Ultros, FF6 advance.

“How old are you kid?” “Ten” “*Sigh* You’ve grown up too fast kid” – Edgar/Relm, Woosley
“How old are you kid?” “Ten” “Ten? Not even a lady yet. I’ll wait eight years”.

Good work Mr. Woosley. And yes, Awesome job on Earthbound.

  • Thanks for the kind words, Roli O. No less than from one of my favorite news sources, wow! I’m pleased that people seem to be enjoying the article.

  • You’re welcome, Jeriaska. I actually did a search on Ted Woolsey prior to my finding that article on your site since a friend of mine was asking where she could learn more about the man. When I came across the article in question, I had to share it with others who’ve come to appreciate the man.
