Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection Transforms Genesis Classics Into HD (Update: Phantasy Star!)

By Spencer . November 6, 2008 . 8:14am

We called it, Sega is planning another collection of Sega Genesis game. But, there are plenty of Sega Genesis compilations already and a library of ROMs to download via the Virtual Console. So, why should you care about a Sega Genesis collection on the PlayStation 3 / Xbox 360? Because Sega is polishing the graphics with a filter. The games reproduced, with help from Backbone Entertainment, can be displayed in 720p. Here’s a quick comparison of the visuals with Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

The visuals in Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection look on par with the Xbox Live Arcade version and this makes sense since Backbone Entertainment developed Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Xbox 360.

When the PlayStation 3 / Xbox 360 disc ships it will have over 40 first party Sega games including:

Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Columns
Alien Storm
Ecco the Dolphin
Shinobi III
Space Harrier
Streets of Rage
Streets of Rage 2
Streets of Rage 3
… and “bonus” content from the Master System and Sega’s 1980 arcade era games. It’s not clear if the 40+ number factors in any Master System games or there are going to be 40+ Sega Genesis games on the disc. I’m hoping the Phantasy Star and/or the Shining Force games get upgraded graphics, but I won’t hold my breath for them.

Update: Jarrod thanks for pointing out a longer list of confirmed games. In addition to these Sega will have unlockable arcade games and developer interviews (!) with the original creators. There are RPGs in here like Phantasy Star II, III, and IV too. Sega has some new artwork for Phantasy Star II lying around it would be great if Sega used it for Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection, but that might be asking for too much at this point.

Here’s what you can expect:

Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
Alien Storm
Altered Beast
Beyond Oasis
Bonanza Bros.
Columns
Comix Zone
Decap Attack starring Chuck D. Head
Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine (aka Puyo Pop Sonic)
Dynamite Headdy
Ecco the Dolphin
Ecco II: The Tides of Time
E-SWAT

The edges on the clouds look smoother, but other than that I can’t really see a difference.
It would be interesting to see what they do with some of the games, but I’m hoping Eternal Champions is one of them. I wonder if this means they’ll upgrade the audio, too.

Awesome, I love these games and to be able to play them on my 40′ HDTV will be fantastic. Still They are always missing Key Titles from Sonics line up in these collections. For example why does this not have Sonic CD? Thats best in the series IMO and they always leave it out. Still with Streets of Rage 1&2 Sonic 1-3, and Space Harrier, Sega had me at hello.

Ugh filters. Also Backbone on development ensures janky production and quality overall… why oh why couldn’t Sega have just had M2 handle it? :/

On the bright side the final game list has been released (only MD games so far, I’m guess the promised MS/AC games will be the unlockables) and it’s surprisingly good…

They’re leaving off Sonic CD again?

They’re including the game where Sonic is a pinball and leaving off Sonic CD.

  • jarrod

Have they ever properly emulated Sega CD? The version of Sonic CD on Gems Collection is based off the PC port code iirc… is it or other SCD games on Gametap? Actually, who does the Sega emulation for Gametap?

Speaking of which, I wonder when they’ll add Sega CD or 32X to the Virtual Console stable?

  • jeffx

I’m sure the answer is yes, but can you turn off the filter?

  • Pulstar

It’s the same filters as that XBLA port! ugh..

  • Yoo-Jin

don’t waste your money on this.

  • Chow

I don’t see Sonic CD being a possibility since it’s not a Genesis game… unless it’s included as bonus content. But do I really want to get another Genesis collection that has the same games that were already on the existing collections?

  • jarrod

Some of the game choices are weird imo… all the Shining games but no LandStalker? Dynamite Headdy but no Gunstar Heroes? No Monster World at all?

Honestly I have most of what I’d want from here already on the Virtual Console, and the only game I don’t (PStar 4) I will shortly. I guess I’ve payed more than I would’ve, but I also chose only the games I really wanted, I get impeccable emulation (and the original resolution output) and I got games not on here (including imports!). It’s a nice collection for people without a PS2 (Sega Ages) or Wii (Virtual Console) but not quite “Ultimate” imo.

Sega just can’t stop pushing their old games. While it is a nice package and seeing the games in HD is a bonus, pretty much anyone who is a genesis fan already has got the sonic collections or the Genesis collection on PS2 or various games on the VC.
Yeah I’d really like to see Shining force in HD but I don’t want to buy it for the fourth time.
Now, if there were new content in some of the games, then it would be worth it.

Also I agree with the above posts, Sega should just release a definitive pre-3d Sonic collection including everything (Knuckles Chaotix especially) and just be done with it.

  • James

Lame I already have a huge collection of roms I can play on the wii homebrew channel, come on sega do a proper HD version of just ONE of the sonic games!

  • ECM

Wake me when Sega decides to actually go back in and rev up the visuals on these a la the System 16 update of Fantasy Zone 2–until then, Zzzz…

  • Mikael

Well the game collection doesn’t sound bad though, but it would be better if they improved more than this. Or its just a cheap port nevertheless.

  • Some Stupid Japanese Name

Looks good. Once I get my Gamego subscription money back I’ll be sure to pre-order this.
