“Hope” Boomerangs Into Final Fantasy XIII

Adding to the repertoire of Final Fantasy XIII characters is a 14-year old boy whose mother was killed. His name is Hope Estheim. He has also been marked as a chosen one, a l’Cie, the same as Lightning.

Hope had been living quite happily in Cocoon with his mother, but in the battle against the fal’Cie there his mother was killed. Snow got her involved and now Hope is bent on revenge.

Onto the battle system! Hope’s weapon is a boomerang. After throwing it, it’s possible to have it chase the enemy and hit a target multiple times before returning. Of course, since Hope uses a long range weapon like Vanilla, he’ll have to stay back, far away from the enemy, in battle.

Vanilla’s weapon is usually folded up, but during battle, it spreads out into an antler-like shape. From the tip, four wires are shot out, and at the tips of these wires are many needles. These wires grip the enemy and cause damage.

New spells revealed that are familiar to Final Fantasy fans are Protect and Faith. Like before, Protect increases defense, whereas Faith increases magic power.

On another note, it has always been assumed that L’Cie, the chosen ones that are branded, have a certain fate in store for them. However, if he or she fails to fulfill this, it seems that they will transforms into a Cie Corpses. Although these guys still look like they did when they were human, they have no emotions and are bound to suffer a cruel eternal life.

here we go with cliché young boy hero.

I wonder how many of the reviews will fall down on this here as they did with Tales of Vesperia and Star Ocean: The Last Hope.

For some odd reason I don´t think they will even mention it.

Sweet info though. Makes the game a bit more interesting.

I can’t wait for this game! Haven’t looked forward to an RPG so much since Lost Odyssey. So that’s what Lightning means when she kept saying if a l’Cie can’t complete his/her “focus” (shimei) in the trailers..

Think the name is Vanille (even though it’s Vanilla in Jpn).

Sakamato Maaya as Lightning (just heard her as Makinami Mari in EVA Rebuild 2.0), Ebara Masashi as Sazh, Fukuyama Jun as Hope, and Vanille by Nia in Gurren Lagann, so far I’m loving the cast. I definitely wouldn’t mind hearing their voices throughout the game (thank god S-E has the sense to not use amateur actor cast this time unlike the protagonists for FF 12).

At least he isn’t named after some other weather condition. But… Hope? Really? I always figured that was a more feminine name. But they (well, tri-ace) already used the totally vague “Fayt” in Star Ocean 3. Why not just name him… uh… “Kuriosity”? Or maybe “Penn Sive”? I hate RPG character names. Sometimes.

    • QBasic

They should’ve hired Kubo Tite to give them creative name lessons.

To date, nothing beats “Neriel Tu Oderschvank.”

      • http://shmups.system11.org/ UnscathedFlyingObject

That’s a weird ass spanish name.

Or that person who wrote the Crest/Banner of the Stars novels. I can’t even list the girl’s name because it’s so darn long, yet sounded totally royal.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

Out of all RPG developers Irem seems to come up with the silliest names.

And I totally expect Kuriosity to be used now.

the only final fantasy to reign it all is CRYSTAL BEAREEEERR

  • Feanor

Does he have a brother named Faith?

    • http://www.nisamerica.com NickyD

Only to learn later on they have a sister named Love and when the three of them get together, they see the strongest amongst them is Love.

AHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA oh man i just got that. that’s a good call.

  • http://shmups.system11.org/ UnscathedFlyingObject

Chosen one, teenager, angsty, emo and and who knows maybe AMNESIAC. Man, this game will be awesome.

  • Saturnus

Why is it when Vanilla is hugging him he has brown hair, yet in the other screens he has white hair? Is he already a ‘Cie Corpse’ or whatever?

Also, this might just be me, but I’m really having trouble trying to grasp what the goddamn story is about. I just don’t get it, what are these people trying to achieve exactly?

Oh and FFXIII takes the cake for crummiest character names: Vanilla, Lightning, Snow… ‘HEY DICTIONARY, WHICH WORD-IMEANNAMELOL- SHOULD WE CHOOSE NEXT?’

And then they go ahead and give a boy a girl’s name. :

    It’ll still be good.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

I think she’s just comforting him and the “event” with Hope’s mom is from the Final Fantasy XIII trial version.

Lightning, Cloud, Snow and so forth sound silly to us, but English text (believe it or not!) is kind of cool in Japan. I guess it’s sort of like how some people have tattoos with characters here.

      • QBasic

Once when I was in Shibuya, I swear to good lord I caught a T-shirt at a local shop with nothing but random English words written all over it.

Excuse me. I meant random Engrish words and random letters.

  • Pesmerga00

I read somewhere that Vanilla’s weapon is a fishing rod, and it had me worried. This description sounds more like an actual weapon(kind of reminds me of those ranged tasers). So does anyone know what it actually is?
