Way of the Samurai 3 Comes To North America Thanks To Two Publishers

By Spencer . August 20, 2009 . 7:40pm

Spike drafted a unique publishing deal to bring Way of the Samurai 3 to North America. Agetec and UFO Interactive will publish the game in North America.

Wait, two companies are publishing the same game? Yep. UFO Interactive is handling the Xbox 360 version and Agetec is publishing Way of the Samurai 3 for PlayStation 3.

I asked UFO Interactive and Agetec about the agreement and received the following response.

During this economic climate, Agetec and UFO wanted to leverage our collective experience and knowledge to release a franchise title for both the PS3 and X360 platforms, while dividing up the total development cost. It’s a win-win situation for everyone, including the fans, who are able to get this title on the platform of their choice.

This creative agreement allowed two smaller publishers to pick up an established, although niche franchise North America.

We’ll have more details about the North American version of Way of the Samurai 3 next week so, stay tuned.

Good news that owners of either console will be able to get the game. I assume this means the PS3 version will get a retail release and not PSN only like some of the other recent niche titles that have been announced.

Oh nice. I really liked the first game although the sequel was rather lacking. This one looked to be much improved. I’m not in the US, but it’s times like this the PS3 being region free is a godsend.

Yeah, I thought that was interesting.

What I’m really curious about though is whether or not the US versions will have all the extra content that was added to the Japanese re-release.

  • QBasic

This is definitely a creative approach.

I’m personally hoping more companies take to this same route.

But I seem to remember one of the issues getting the Growlansers over was conflict between WD and Atlus as to who exactly had what rights — so as long as everyone plays nice…..

Now goddammit agetec, finish this and make some money so we can get Disaster Report 3!

  • Jaxel

About time! Been waiting years for this!

  • Didn’t the 360 version come out months later (5 or 6?) in Japan with extras? Does anyone know if they’re just directly releasing them just like that here or are both systems getting the upgraded version? I’ll buy whichever one is the complete version.

  • jarrodand

I heard the reason was because UFO isn’t a licensed PS3 publisher?

  • ReturnOfSomeDude

This is going to be funny if one of these teams decides to localize it differently than the other.

And by funny, I mean, I’m not going to buy either version of this game, but I would laugh. (Sorry, but after importing Way of the Samurai 1 & 2 for the PS2, I know there’s just not enough content in these games to justify ever buying one again.)

I thought Agetec was dead at this point…Glad to see that they’re still alive and kicking!
