Star Ocean: The Last Hope International Screenshots Have A Small Surprise

By Spencer . December 4, 2009 . 7:38pm

Square Enix sent over new screenshots of Star Ocean: The Last Hope International which show something the international Xbox 360 version didn’t have. No, it’s not anything like a secret characters or extra story sequences.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope International is simply Star Ocean: The Last Hope with six language options and optional Japanese voice acting. There is another feature Square Enix hasn’t mentioned that some fans will be happy to see — anime portraits. This batch of screenshots confirm those will be restored in Star Ocean: The Last Hope International. Don’t like ‘em? Then stick with the CG faces. Looks like you can choose since the screenshots show both character designs.

Star Ocean: The Last Hope International lands in North America on February 9, 2010, a week after White Knight Chronicles International Edition.

Nice, I was hoping that this would turn out this way! I hear SO 4 was just average, but maybe it will be better with Japanese VO…

    • Aoshi00

It wasn’t the best game, but it was far from being the worst game. I actually had a lot of fun w/ it. Usually I prefer Jpn dub w/ most JRPGs, but in SO4’s case, I actually liked the English dub a lot.. People said Lymle, Sarah, Welch, Meracle, etc sounded annoying, well, for the most part the US actors were just emulating the Jpn voices, so… Sarah actually sounded less annoying in English.. The Eng. VA did take Welch’s wackiness up a notch. The SO4 gang are just silly for the most part :)

      • Kris

That’s an interesting perspective on the voices, I guess I’ll have a chance to try both when this comes out! I’ll be sure to give the English voices a fair shake before I make my opinion.

  • Aoshi00

Yeah, I notice the anime portraits before too, but I wasn’t sure if it was just preliminary screenshots. This is definitely the definitive version. Even though I actually prefer the CG faces, but option is always good to see the original presentation. What about the Persona 3/4-like menus? To be honest, I don’t miss that at all.

    • Ereek

Seconded, I feel the CG fit much better. And the menu looks much nicer. But, really, I’m very glad they’re allowing us to choose.

  • woa they look nice, i think ill leave those faces anime based

  • sirfratley

Nice option, i really hate the cg faces, the game is a JRPG must be in a japanese style with anime faces, i hope that the menus stay as the X360 japanese version too.

  • bubbba123

They can’t add ANYTHING new at all gameplay wise? … :(

    • sirfratley

Well if they repair the frame rate of the xbox 360 and the addition of the japanese track im served.

    • Aren’t they fixing the battle system up and such? or was that just a rumor I heard?

  • Cool, I was already buying this. Icing on the proverbial cake.

    • Couldn’t put it any better.

  • keriaku

I am very happy they included the anime portraits this time.

  • Can’t wait to play this game, once again PS3 gets the definitive version, woot!

Now we just need to see the boxart for Japan and North America(hopefully they’ll be the same, haha.)

  • holyPaladin

I hear there’s gonna be a new character (based on character slot at official site)

  • Hraesvelgr

So the PS3 version doesn’t come with a good game, either? Too bad… too bad…

  • malek86

Too bad about the muppet-like characters in cutscenes.

The time there was a cutscene, I always had this weird feeling that I couldn’t take it seriously because there were marionettes speaking.

  • palaxius

“Star Ocean: The Last Hope International is simply Star Ocean: The Last Hope with six language options and optional Japanese voice acting.”

So that’s the extra content? Bleah.

    • malek86

I guess we can expect something more too, like at least a bonus dungeon or something. Maybe not a new character, though I wouldn’t cast away the possibility. Overall, it’s in their best interest to offer a lot of new stuff, because they’ll also want 360 users to upgrade to the new version.

      • There’s also the possibility of DLC, as much as I hate paying for it…

  • Very good squeeenix , if only you could make this more often ««
Im very happy that there is Choice!

  • BraveWind

    …I’m Happy @[email protected]

  • Hurray for little extras! ^_^

  • doubleO7

    Booyah! Anime art FTW!

  • blackstar44

wow thats it? i expected like an extra character, more dungeons, extra cut scenes and more special skills. i guess its not though…i dont think ima pic this game up then

  • At this point it doesn’t matter what they add to the game I just want the game on the PS3. I gave my 360 copy to my cousin since he likes the X360 and RPGs.

  • Wow. Nice. This just bumped up a little on my list then.

I was REALLY hoping for the anime portraits. Glad we’re getting them :)

According to the latest scans from the dengeki magazine, Crowe F. Almedio and a new female character will be playable, plus, alternate costumes from Infinite Undiscovery for Edge and Reimi.

Moderator’s note: Where does it say that?

    • Aoshi00

That’s cool! I liked Aya and Capell a lot despite what some might say about IU. Seems like the busy Persona 3/4-like menus would be included too, at least in the Jpn ver. If I remember correctly, I thought there’s going to be extra Private action. This definitive version is not to be missed.

    • g6pdh

Umm… those scans don’t show anything new. NOWHERE on those scans does it say Crowe is playable, and I don’t see any new female character either. Not to mention the IU pic is a promo picture from the guy who did character design for IU. He says he just drew it for fun, it’s not related to the game.

      Delusional Fanboy much?

    • Well there was this new art that had Crowe in the middle of the main cast let me see if I can find it. There we go.

This could mean anything at this point so guess we can wait a bit longer till the developer confirms it.

      • g6pdh

Well, it’s missing about 3 other characters who are playable, so I can’t really take that as anything other than promo art of the first people you encounter in the game (since this *is* for PS3 owners who never played the dirty 360 version)

@Xeahnort: Yeah, I read through a better copy and did not find anything relating to the claims you made. Just wanted to make sure to keep everyone’s expectations in check ;)

    • Xeahnort

I did read about it not too long ago. I have to admit that I can´t read japanese so I can´t tell if this info its true or not.

      • Not reading Japanese is understandable, but if you can’t tell if it’s true or not please be cautious when commenting. The comment you left makes it seem like fact as in “according to…” when you’re not sure.
