Arc System Works Wants To Make Xbox 360/PS3 Guilty Gear

By Spencer . December 30, 2009 . 8:40am

imageWhen Sammy merged with Sega, the rights to Guilty Gear transferred to the house of Sonic. Arc System Works moved on, went back to the drawing board, and made BlazBlue, but haven’t forgotten about Guilty Gear.

“Personally I don’t like that idea,” Tomo Ohno, Business Development Director at Arc System Works, said to NowGamer when asked about a Guilty Gear and BlazBlue crossover. “What we can say about Guilty Gear is that it is not dead yet. It has not ended. The producer/creator of Guilty Gear, Daisuke Ishiwatari, his comment for this meeting [was] ‘I have the full intention to create Guilty Gear for PS3 and 360.’ ”

Intentions are one thing. Rights are another. Sega and Arc System Works have to sort out the business side since they own the characters. In more concrete news Europe has a date for BlazBlue. Arc System Works HD fighter is going to barrier burst into Europe on March 5, 2010. You may remember that new publisher pQube also announced new gameplay content for PAL territories including new characters and moves.

I’m curious as to how much Sega really is/was involved with GG. The last game I think I saw Sammy’s (Sega’s) name in it was GGXX Slash. Since then, they’ve made Dust Strikers, Judgment, Accent Core, Accent Core Plus, and Overture. In any of those games, I don’t remember seeing a single mention of Sammy or Sega. Even that Queen’s Gate artbook with Dizzy a few months back has Arc System Works credited for the character.

It’s not that Sega is actively micromanaging Guilty Gear, but they do own the rights to it. Well, technically Sega Sammy owns the rights. Sammy owns Guilty Gear, Sega merged with Sammy, so the rights transferred to Sega Sammy.

While the Sammy label isn’t on the products, Sega Sammy still has decision making power when it comes to Guilty Gear. This is one of the reasons Guilty Gear II alludes to, but doesn’t specifically mention other characters in the series.

    >.> I bet my dollar (I lack euros) that Europe is getting Continuum Shift and they just called it BlazBlue… like Tekken 6 on console is Bloodline Rebellion. Anyways, this is definitely good news. I’m more of a BlazBlue guy personally now that i’ve been making the rounds with it.

    • Raiyu

That’s probably true. Especially since its being released about 9 months after it was announced for Europe. I don’t want to be left out of Continuum Shift :(

Also, is everyone mocking me or are they serious with the in HD? <.<

This is excellent news for me. I just starting getting into the Guilty Gear series this past year and I’m happy to see it being continued. I love BlazBlue too, but I’m happy it doesn’t have to be one or the other.

Well, they did make Guilty Gear 2: Overture for the 360. And I bought it, despite the reviews it got. Actually a pretty decent game, though I’d prefer a plain old fighter.

So will they finally make a *new* Guilty Gear game, or haven’t they drained XX of every possible drop of profit yet?
