Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Is T, Kojima Wishes It Was E For Everyone

By Spencer . March 3, 2010 . 12:38am

imageMost Metal Gear Solid games are rated “M” by the ESRB in North America. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is shooting for a broader audience since it’s being designed as a “T” rated title.

What does that mean? No blood, but the game’s plot is still serious. Hideo Kojima explains more in a tweet.

“This time around we wanted to go for a ‘T’ rating since it’s on the PSP. There is no bloodshed effects so the younger crowd can enjoy it as well. But the MGS world and theme lives on. The script is seriously written…anti-nuke and anti-war with the nuclear deterrence theory as the backbone. Wish it could of been ‘E.’”

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is rated CERO C in Japan, which means its for ages 15 and up. So, one of the differences between an ESRB “T” and “M” rated Metal Gear Solid game is blood. What would an “E” rated Metal Gear Solid game be like then? Would everyone carry super soakers?

While I understand Kojima wanting people of all ages to enjoy his game, his story isn’t exactly Disney-stuff.. I thought it takes more than just blood for a game to get M rating.. MGS3 was a masterpiece, I mean the torture scene was classic, so they shouldn’t dumb it down. I just hope this has a strong narrative instead of focusing too much on multi-player since it’s supposed to be MGS5. The demo was cool enough I guess.

Exactly what I was thinking. The torture scenes were a quirk of the series. It made sense not to include it in MGS4 as Liquid Ocelot would have ordered his immediate execution upon capture. Plus, it’s not like his body could have withstood torture.

Personally not worried about the strength of the narrative as Kojima has said countless times that this is a true Metal Gear Solid game.

I dont think you should take his comments too seriously, he has said before that one of the main reasons for Peace Walker being on PSP was to expand the series fanbase so saying something like that to me is more of a PR statement to try and soften the image, rather then say he wants to dilute the whole series.

I know what you’re saying but apparently this game has the whole MGS4 team behind it. I don’t expect it to be on the same level as MGS 1, 2 (my favourites in the series) and I’m no where near as hyped up for it as I was for MGS4 (and I’ll admit I was a little disappointed in that) but I expect it to be a solid title. Perhaps the most fun game on the PSP till an International release of Birth by Sleep.

I have little intention of playing co-op so I hope it doesn’t damage the experience at all. It’s kinda like with White Knight Chronicles: all they did was show off the online gameplay because it was a unique element added to the game. The difference is WKC’s single player suffered from horrible writing (or so I’ve heard) while Peace Walker is being directed(?) by Kojima. So far we’ve yet to see him do a half-assed job with a game – touch wood.

Am I the only one that thinks that is a fake? You guys really believe that is really him?

I don’t think he has used twitter since early last year! I think I have the real one on my follow list, not the one this article references.

    • He has two Twitter accounts a Japanese one and an English one. This is the English one. Check out the photos if you’re incredulous.

        Thanks for the response!

I’d like to imagine the Metal Gear in an E-rated game would be a mobile platform capable of baking and delivering pizzas to anywhere on the planet.

I can’t wait for this game, the demo was a lot of fun and I am looking forward to this much more then I am Rising. Especially with Kojima actually working on this one and it being a proper Metal Gear from a gameplay stand point.

    • I enjoyed the demo too!
In fact I did a no missile-launcher run of the tank mission, so much fun…
Even though on a previous comment I posted about probably not enjoying a game like this having not played any other Metal Gear games, I’m not so sure about that now, all because of the demo :).

  • Is not like ppl respect these E, T , etc, unless they are below 10 and dont know what is what

    • Well… some retailers don’t sell Mature games to people younger than 17 years old.

  • eliel

Tranquilizer guns/non lethal weapons only maby, would still be fun but alot harder…

  • anbu

younger crowd wants bloodshed effects though…

  • Chow

Super soakers? Reminds me of Eat Lead: The Return of Matt Hazard. XD

  • Yeah Kojima… E for Everyone when your whole game deals with people shooting each other… yeah.
