Square Enix CEO Comments On Final Fantasy VII Remake

By Spencer . March 22, 2010 . 12:35pm

image Yoshinori Kitase (Director), Motomu Toriyama (Planner), and thousands of fans are keen on a Final Fantasy VII remake. Now hear what the head honcho of Square Enix thinks about the topic.

“Right now we don’t have a clear direction, but many fans have requested we remake Final Fantasy VII,” said Yoichi Wada, President and CEO of Square Enix, said to Siliconera during an interview at the Final Fantasy XIII launch party. “We’re going to explore the possibility – whether or not we’re going to do it, if we’re going to do it, and the platform.”

I asked Wada-san his thoughts about a Final Fantasy remake, perhaps a PSP one if he felt a PlayStation 3 remake was too costly. Look for the full interview later this week.

Well now the possibility is in the air…

  • shion16

  • Vino21

Definitely on the PSP. FF13 took way too long to come out, and Nomura has absolutely no idea what he’s doing with Versus….given if he knows what he’s doing in ANY of his projects….

PSP is definitely the best choice.

    • BK0000

XIII took too long? Agito XIII is still vaporware. We haven’t heard anything about it in a long time. Making a PSP game doesn’t guarantee a short development time.

      • Vino21

Agito was a total screw-up on their part – they’ve been developing the game for over two years for the cell, when they realized there wasn’t a single phone powerful enough for it, so they ended up restarting from scratch for the PSP.

  • Vino (Tim N)

Is it just the West that wants a remake, or is it Japanese fans as well?
I’ve never played the game so I don’t know what the hype is about, I just know about this Cloud and the bad guy looking bishojo.
I see like teens right now asking for a game remade they never played and just fanboy/girl out of it. I understand some want to try it in current gen graphics, but I think its not that big of a deal.

    • Xien12

So Sephiroth is a girl now. That’s great!

    • BK0000

I think a lot of the hype about the game comes from the fact that it was a lot of people’s first RPG. The game really isn’t anything special. There are a lot of RPGs and Final Fantasy titles that are better than it.

  • evilmoogle

    Let the milking BEGIN!
    oh wai..

  • Xeahnort

    Acta, non verba

  • Macstorm

PSP version using the Crisis Core engine for the win.

    • kupomogli

  • Simon

if its too costly, they’ll do it on the 360, dunno how it works but microsoft will support them

    • SladeNoctis

“Reserve Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and receive a Xbox 360 exclusive disc “Lost Fantasy” containing most of the content that been taken out. Order Now!!”

A Sony Spokesperson once said Final Fantasy is a PlayStation franchise, and how XIII is best on PS3, on a single Blu-ray disc — the way it was meant to be played.

I think most FF7 fans agrees with this, you know it’s not our fault Microsoft decided for some reason not to go Blu-ray or HD-DVD.

    • SlashZaku

Do it on the 360 and not PS3? SE would claim the crown of dumbest company this gen and they’ve been working towards that crown quite a bit this gen with their decisions, especially if you think Sony wouldn’t back such a venture.

      • The internet would explode with rage if they made it a 360 exclusive. I think I’d be part of that rage.

  • Ereek

I also second the PSP sentiment. It doesn’t need to be HD.

    • We’re going to be all over the comments in the full interview…I can already tell.

  • jarrodand

Can’t wait to play FF7r on my iPhone!

  • Cloud_ST

My god,I hope at least we get some light on the issue right now, this whole bussines of some executive saying “No way”,and then another saying “Waaaaay”,and then Nomura and his very,VERY unclear answers.

Thanks in advance for making the interview though, you guys rock!.

  • If it’s on the PSP I will have no interest what-so-ever.

    PS3/360 or don’t bother

    • nyoron

I agree with your sentiment, although if they did do it for PSP I’d probably end up playing it anyway. I’d definitely cry about it on the internet though!

    • I second your statement, sir.

    • Aoshi00

Thirded. Yeah, why bother making a remake at all if it’s on the PSP, that’s Crisis Core (which I liked).

Make it happen S-E, put me down for 2 copies on day 1 (Jpn/Eng), that’s $160 for you, multiply that by million, voila

      • raymk

hey don’t leave me out i fourth it. I’d be mad at first but any true ffVII fan would still play it. It may even be the best selling psp title if they do

      • Pesmerga00

        Fifthed? PS3 or bust.

        • cowcow

Nintendo DS with 2D sprites or bust

  • MrRobbyM

I would a full PS3 remake. Note a re-do, just a remake with updated graphics, VA. It has to stay mostly the same though. No third person camera view like FFXIII. I like preset camera angles that capture the best of the area. Combat has to stay the same and materia system needs to be the same with some slight updates.

    • Ereek

While I like Pre-rendered backgrounds, I disagree about them in FFVII. I’d love to be able to explore the back alleys of Wall Market with a controllable camera. Now that we have the technology (even on PSP), some of the locations would look breathtaking with even a partially controllable camera. City of the Ancients immediately comes to mind, as goes Gaea’s Cave and the Ancient Forest.

      • Hraesvelgr

Yeah, I’m not a fan of FFVII, but set camera angles should be more or less a thing of the past in modern video games.

  • Rinkudinku

I’m a huge FFVII fan, and yeah it was almost my first RPG (CT was really my first) so yeah, I totally want a remake. I’d take it on the PSP.

As for an HD remake, I don’t think anything they could do would be good enough. The hype created by that tech demo, and fans wanting it to look like a playable Advent Children.. crazy stuff. I just want a remake where Cloud and co. don’t look like Lego people. Most of the 3D in that game is a total eyesore.

It just did not age well. I can still get people to play any of the 2D FFs or VIII and on, but one look at VII and they can’t take it seriously.

  • epy

Again? They have managed to mention a FFVII remake every single week for the last couple of months or something. They went from “A FF7 REMAKE IS IMPOSSIBLE” to “Ok, let’s talk about which platform it’s going to be for” in a few weeks? Maybe they are already in the middle of development and all this playing and teasing is just a marketing ploy.

Honestly I rather have a Vagrant Story remake/sequel.

    • I have a feeling you’re right. I bet that Square Enix has probably been secretly working on Final Fantasy VII since that PS3 demonstration demo surfaced years ago, and now they’re just teasing and building anticipation to try and get people all excited.

      Watch, either E3 2010 or E3 2011 – FFVII for the PS3.

    • Justinzero

“Honestly I rather have a Vagrant Story remake/sequel.”

      I totally agree!

    • Devonian

I’d rather they remake Xenogears and FINISH THE GODDAMNED SECOND DISK THIS TIME.

      • Pesmerga00

I could get behind this idea. Xenogears is an amazing game.

      • BK0000

Other than the translation, Xenogears is fine the way it is. If they ever tried to remake Xenogears, they’d ruin it now that most of the original team isn’t with the company anymore.

    • [The Hunter] Doomrider

This! Give me more Sidney! Oh man, that would seriously rock…

Just imagining that awesome battle in the Snowfly Forest in glorious HD, wow… And all those amazingly stylish cinematics, with some good British English voicework thrown in for good measure…

Damn, I think I’m going to have a seizure or something.

Aaaand I’m back in the real world. It’ll never happen.

    • puchinri

Vagrant Story remake would be the best thing ever.
But they have a lot of older series I’d love to see remade instead of FFVII too.

    • BK0000

Why? It would be horrible now that Matsuno is gone. There’s no way Square Enix can do a proper Ivalice game without him.

      • kupomogli

This is also the reason why I hope Square Enix doesn’t make another Ogre Battle or Tactics Ogre game, they’d ruin them.

Don’t get me wrong though. I’d buy an Ogre Battle title the first day if one were to be released, but I still think they’d screw it up.

  • I will be very disappointed if the remake is on the PSP. I want a full scale PS3 remake of it. I tried introducing a friend of mine to it, a younger friend who started gaming with the PS2, and she couldn’t even get into FFVII. She said the character models hurt her eyes. There’s a whole younger generation of people in their early 20’s who have never played FFVII. Doing a full-scale PS3 HD remake is the best way to get them into the series. Hell, I wouldn’t even mind if they just updated the character models to be modern standards, stuck with the CGI backgrounds, and put in voicework.

  • Justinzero

What!?! They are remaking Final Fantasy VI!?! Oops, I forgot an “I” and got excited. For a second, I thought SquareEnix was doing something that made sense.

    • puchinri

Shouldn’t this really be what fans are asking for….?

    • zshadow

No. Final Fantasy VI is fine in its current incarnation. VII, on the other hand, has not aged well at all. The low res spite backdrops and block-like 3D models look terrible.

That’s not to say I’d never want to see VI remade – it’s still my favorite in the series. I just don’t feel this generation of consoles would do it justice.

  • Vanilla

Even after YEARS of rumors and speculation, I can’t even begin to imagine how much time, sweat, toil, blood–whatever–this would take. They’d have to make sure the project keeps up with the generation, figure out how to make this awkward game WORK in terms of JRPG’s today, and somehow make it live up to the expectations of both the older and newer generation fans. No skimping, which, for many fans, means no PSP.

    Tall order.

  • midgard229

i wudnt mind if it was crisis core graphics with brand new Cg.

honestly i wud rather a ps3 remake but if only psp version is possible then go for it, me and millions of others wud jump at it aslong as it looks as gorgeous as kingdom hearts or crisis core

  • Brianna, also, I’d like to keep this in the nostalgia section, since everybody knows by now, “OMG! THEY KILLED AERIS!” “YOU BASTARD!”

    • alastor3

      You…You Spoiled me!

  • I have to call bullshit about Squaresoft saying it’ll be too costly to remake FF7 for the PS3. Sony knows it’s a money maker and that it will sell in HUGE volumes, and be extremely profitable. (Not to mention will do whatever they can to make sure it remains exclusive to the PS3 to maximize those profits.) I personally would go out and buy a PS3 if they remade Final Fantasy 7 for the PS3 and I am quite sure that other fans of the game will too.

  • :/ i kinda want it but ………….. part of VII charm was its prerendered sets and squared handed charas ……. but i loved Advent children so id definatly buy it jap and eng version :P ! As long as it just a remake and not a respoil.
