Tetsuya Nomura Talks Kingdom Hearts 3 And Beyond

By Ishaan . March 24, 2010 . 4:19pm

The Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Ultimania guidebook goes on sale in Japan tomorrow. However, an interview with Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy Versus XIII director Tetsuya Nomura contained within has already made its way onto the net. In the interview, Nomura discusses the future of the franchise.

Here’s a translation, courtesy of Heartstation.org:

“About the next title, Kingdom Hearts 3 depends on Final Fantasy XIII Versus, but development of the next title is already underway. There are two titles other than Kingdom Hearts 3 in conception, and I think I’ll release one within this year.”

“As from next year, I want to put out a title with multiple main characters.”

Nomura goes on to suggest that KH3 won’t necessarily signal the end of the franchise. Rather, Kingdom Hearts 3 will bring the Xehanort saga to an end, and Sora will still be a part of the games that follow as the “hero.” He also reveals that the overseas release of Birth by Sleep will include more cutscenes than the original.

More Kingdom Hearts, even after concluding the storyline thus far? Shock!

  • Cool! We get more scenes!
Darn! want to make the storylonger!? i like KH, but i cant imagine how many games would come before KH 4 >_>

  • holyPaladin

Wondering what Nomura do with the KH story after KH 2

    • Simple, they pull a classic Nintendo and tell you that the princess is in the next castle.

  • Hannah Montana in KH3!!!

  • Vino21

    T_T He doesn’t know how to stop….

Wada! Wada-san! Come time for layoffs…look nowhere else! This man must be stopped! T_T

    • I suspect Nomura would love nothing more than to let Kingdom Hearts go. He’s said before that he feels he’s outgrown it, which is why he’s developing Versus XIII with a more serious tone. Wada and Co. are probably the ones asking them to keep churning them out, since it’s one of their few global brands.

Also, since Disney own the I.P., it’s likely they ask for new games, too.

      • Vino21

I dunno….he seems too awfully enthusiastic for someone who “wants to let go.”

Not to mention he doesn’t prioritize. Versus XIII should’ve come a helluva lot ahead of Birth, Days, and coded. Yet because of those games, it’s been 5 years since it’s been announced, and it’s still in its development crib.

At this rate, it’ll end up on the top five games of longest developing time.

        • Code

Yeahh, prioritizing Versus would be nice, but that’s the difference when you have a company like Disney on your shoulder, in the business world sometimes internal projects have to take the backseat. At least in my opinion, Chain of Memories, and 358/2 felt like they were more business decisions, then creative ones, not saying they’re bad, I’m just saying I think someone in a boardroom somewhere said “We need a KH game on a portables!” with that being said, they still are great games, just had it been entirely up to Square I don’t see Kingdom Hearts on PS2 leading to Chain of Memories on GBA. But the whole series at times to me feels like it’s being juggled to meet expectations like that, but with that being said, every game has tried something different, and it definitely feels like Nomura has used the projects as creative outlets to try new things, and styles of gameplay.

I figure Nomura likely has his own projects he’d be more interested in working on at this point, but it’s a little of column A and a little of column B, he likely feels he would rather move on, but he likely isn’t that put out by working on them.

  • Kuza21

sigh* It’s funny how they’re talking about multiple Kingdom Hearts titles when they (apart from handheld games) come out every billion years. (Ex. Kingdom Hears II came out four years ago.)

  • Vanilla

At this rate, the original staff of KH will all have passed away and our great-grandkids will be playing KH2.959999 on virtual reality simulators.

Also, who’s been telling Nomura that he has the creative capabilities of a god? Watanabe does a smashing job, but ultimately, they ARE making a Disney JRPG. You can only make it so complicated before you have to go back conclude the damn thing.

  • As long as Yoko keeps her job im all for this. >.>

    • jj984jj

She’s already working on Last Ranker, Xenoblade, 3rd Birthday, and Versus XIII. To her keep her great level of quality, I hope she doesn’t take on too much. I’m not a big fan of Kingdom Hearts either, especially beyond the first game (but I might try BbS). I hope they find someone else for the spin-offs at least.

  • cowcow

    More KH?

Where’s my Racing Lagoon 2, Bouncer 2, Bushido Blade 3, Parasite Eve 3, Vagrant Story 2, Tobal 3, Eihrgeiz 2, Xenogears 2, Heavy Metal Thunder 2, Final Fantasy VII PS3 remake??

    • Ereek

There’s one flaw in your comment: We’re getting Parasite Eve 3.

Oh, and I suppose another would be that the group that worked on Xenogears all got laid off and are Monolith Soft now, so Square doesn’t have anything with Xenogears other than, perhaps, the IP.

I don’t understand all the hate for Nomura and this series (even though Im not a big fan). I will admit that the way he speaks it sound like the series is going to have tons of releases and focus more on cashing in rather then focus on quality, but despite all his talk the main series has not seen an entry in 4 years. Personally I just think he says all this to keep fans excited about upcoming releases. I seriously doubt that we will ever see 4+ KH games released during a console lifecycle.

  • Starmony

Is Nomura intending to ruin KH like he did with FFVII, rite? Oh, well…

    • pressstart

Correct me if I’m wrong, but Nomura took the reigns for FFVII, while he was always the main man for KH right? I think that would be quite different, ruining another’s legacy instead of corrupting his own.

  • Honestly, you guys…I don’t understand the hate for Kingdom Hearts either. They’re all fun games. There hasn’t been a single bad one yet. 358/2 is one of the best RPGs on DS and I can’t wait for BbS. Yes, the story is beyond redemption at this point…but I just think that’s part of the fun. No one ever complains about the Zelda timeline being incoherent.

    • Vino21

They are fun, but there is such thing as going too far.

I mean…what was Kingdom Hearts when it first came out?

…Now, look at what it is now: Existential crises, cloning projects, organization conspiracies, meaning of life & death, chronic backstabbing disorders, revenge plots…

Sorry. :( But that simply isn’t what Kingdom Hearts should be. How would you feel if…I dunno, Chinatown Wars spawned a sequel, where the main bad guy has Charles Atlas Superpowers, and does the Aizen thing on every single GTA game in the past, San Andreas included. Sure the *gameplay* improves…it’s like, I dunno, GTA meets Just Cause and Crackdown. But the story? Clusterfuck, to say the least. A senseless clusterfuck.

Oh…and for the record, while I AM looking forward to BBS, mainly due to the gameplay….Days is one of the worst games on the DS. :P It’s level of repetiveness makes Dynasty Warriors 59 look like Bayonetta.

    • jj984jj

Did you really just compare this to Zelda? Miyamoto doesn’t pretend that he’s interested in having any real continuity between the Zelda games, they’re all connected by fan speculation using random quotes from Aonuma. Nomura’s “Xehanort saga” is undoubtedly a key part of this series, if it wasn’t we wouldn’t be playing as Ventus in BbS.

      • Code

I think the bigger question, is did Vino21 just compare KH’s story to GTA? I think that’s a MUCH bigger stretch then KH to Zelda, lol x_x’

        • Vino21

Somehow, I get this real sneaking impression that you all didn’t even BOTHER to look into the metaphor I provided…………….

  • Can never go wrong with kingdom hearts. Love the series. Cant wait to see it on a home console once again.

  • Masengan

Bring ’em on, I will get every KH game.

  • Piyopiyo

Well after having finished BBS I really do look forward to KH3. I’d like to see Sora meet up with Aqua and Ven.. and Terra if all is possible haha.

I wonder about the multiple characters thing if Sora will continue to be the main character… Does that mean we’ll be playing as Riku and Kairi? Or even Donald and Goofy? I suppose only time will tell. Both of those options sounds like fun.
It’ll also be interesting to see Sora’s growth – and clothing change. Oh well, I can only hope~ Nomura must feel like Sora is his “son” OTL

There sure is alot of hate on this site towards more KH. I don’t see the problem in milking as long as the games are good. Which all of the side KH titles have been so far. I mean why not milk it? It sells well. Should they just stop earning money to protect your “pure” feelings of not wanting to “ruin” the series? Please. Get over yourself. This is a business. If you don’t like it, then don’t buy it, that’s what shows them you don’t appreciate it.

    Hooray for more Kingdom Hearts!
