How Long Is The Single Player Campaign In Front Mission Evolved?

By Spencer . May 28, 2010 . 12:30pm

image According to the Front Mission Evolved FAQ, a little more than 10 hours.

Good thing Front Mission Evolved has online multiplayer. Front Mission Evolved includes deathmatch, team deathmatch, and domination modes. The game also supports voice chat for online matches. People who pick up the PC version will battle over Steam, not Games for Windows Live.

Reminiscent of Front Mission 4, Front Mission Evolved only has English voice acting… even in Japan. The Japanese version has English voiceovers and Japanese subtitles.

Front Mission Evolved stomps into North America on September 14, a few days before it launches in Japan on September 16.

The release date is awfully close to a certain big series release that month. Hopefully the game we be designed to include and encourage multiple playthroughs. Doesn’t the game feature 2 protagonists?

  • SeventhEvening

There is almost nothing about this game that sounds like a good idea. A Front Mission that is around ten hours long, isn’t a strategy game, and is counting on online play? How is this Evolved in any way?

Personally, I think it will tank. Most of the old fans have been alienated and it’s releasing in a month that will have plenty of better offerings. Mech enthusiasts have ACE R a couple weeks before, Online fans will have Halo: Reach the same day, and Atelier Rorona is supposed to be in that same neighborhood for RPG fans alienated from the change in gameplay.

Thus Square Enix continues to break with tradition, spearheads and accelerates (imo in the wrong direction) towards mediocrity. They’ve turned a series know to be at least 30 hours long (FM3 was like 50 and FM5 was around 40 or so) into a quick fix of hybrid TPS with Mech customization. Guess what Square, there is a series for that already, its called Armor Core. This should be called Front Mission devolved.

Outside of a few games, Square has been mediocre since the days of the original PlayStation.

        Amen.

But they use to produce better games at least for every 2-3 bombs they get 1 right. IMO they haven’t got a single game right on the home consoles this gen. Anything from the so called FFXIII to LR to IU. The last game I enjoyed playing from them was Front Mission 5 and they didn’t even localize it.

Though FM isn’t afraid of change and has branched off into a number of spin-offs (TPS was already done in Online, quite well from personal experience). Even the turn-based entries have “evolved” radically from their Fire Emblem-esque roots. The genre change isn’t really a major concern, but I can understand a lot of the comments behind it. Most people outside of Japan don’t really understand FM (misinterpretation or lack of information) and part of that is due to Square’s poor handling of the series overseas.

I think the one true concern is that PDD6, the FM team, is nowhere to be found in Evolved’s development. Even the writing is being handled by Momotu Toriyama, not the usual PDD6 writers. Of course, it’s also possible that the changes could produce a sleeper hit when FME is released this September. I’d take a wait-and-see approach, rent first if you want to test it out.

I actually hope this bombs. First off, companies need to learn that Double Helix are not just creative poison, but financial poison. Second, can Squeenix stop trying to appeal to Westerners? It’s pretty obvious they don’t know how to do what is popular here, so why not just stick with what gave them fans in the first place? God, I hate Wada.

I remember the days of maxing out my Front Mission 3 clock at 99:99. Why give us a linear, dumbed down mech shooter? Come on, Square.

    • kupomogli

FM3 was the best in the series. Two completely different paths each with a couple different paths mid game. It had a fake(and stupid) online system, but it did waste a few hours if you took the time to go through it.

  • Zeonsilt

    I don’t buy this.
    Front Mission Degeneration for me.
I’m fan of FM since 2001,but this game kill’s me.
But it’s not *Front Mission 6* so, i still have a hope.

They are licensing the series out at no cost to them besides publishing as a last ditch crapshoot to see if they can still make some money out of it. If it bombs they will likely bury the series like they have their other niche series.

    • urbanscholar

Its a damn shame really. Call me crazy but I’m a big supporter of Square-Enix’s more niche efforts. The game is going to bomb indeed but I’ll be there to play the last title in the series. Hmm do you post on another forum?

      • http://www.tbstactics.com mjemirzian

Yes I post on other forums and I run my own website Strategic Insights at http://www.tbstactics.com that covers tactical tbs and srpgs.. and unfortunately not Front Mission Evolved.
