Before Bonk: Brink Of Extinction Was Downloadable, It Was For Wii, Then DS

imageBonk: Brink of Extinction, a new game starring the headbutting platform hero Bonk, is coming to PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and WiiWare later this year. But, before Hudson settled on a downloadable game, Bonk: Brink of Extinction was originally documented as a boxed Wii game.

“Internally it had been documented as a Wii Game, a DS Game and finally a Digital Download game,” Peter Dassenko, Producer, revealed. “So the version you’re playing (or will play) is a combination of many different ideas from each of the platforms we’d made a design document for.”

Even on the original design document Bonk: Brink of Extinction was set as a 3D game. Hudson planned Wii and DS specific controls, but these were scrapped since Bonk: Brink of Extinction is a now multiplatform title.

Check back next week for more about Bonk: Brink of Extinction when the full interview goes live.

Man, that’s actually too bad. This new Bonk *looks* awful (maybe it’s awesome, but it looks absolutely terrible in nearly every way as far as videos go), and I say this as a very ‘hardcore’ Bonk fan. (Bonk’s Revenge is still one of my all-time favorite platform games.)

    Yeah, that’s true:
    - Low contrast, making it hard to spot the important stuff.
    - Low resolution textures that aren’t exactly a substitute for Bonk’s charming “looks like this was drawn by a 4 year old”

It’s too early to tell, but I’ll just say it:
Tower of Shadow team or M2 (ReBirth series) should have worked on this.

I’ve has to wonder why didn’t more companies go with the Megaman 9/10, Konami Rebirth Series formula. If they can’t afford to go high budget on it and invest/hold the product until it looks good with today’s technology (not necessarily pushing it’s boundaries, but with good artistic direction) they might as well go retro and nostalgic.

This game, just like Adventure Island Wiiware last year will be ignored due to it’s looks alone, and sadly: rightfully so.
