Surprise! Yakuza: Of The End Is A Zombie Game

By Spencer . September 14, 2010 . 8:14pm

image Sega is taking the Yakuza series in an entirely, totally unexpected direction, with Yakuza: Of the End. The upcoming PlayStation 3 game is a zombie shooter set in Kamurocho. The zombie invasion took place in April 2011. Screenshots in Famitsu show the Japanese Self Defense Force overrun by the undead.

Kazuma, Goro, Ryuji, and Shun, characters from previous Yakuza games, stay behind to defend their home by shooting zombies. Players will be able to customize guns in the game, one of the screens shows Goro with a gun arm.

Toshihiro Nagoshi wouldn’t tell Famitsu if Yakuza: Of the End was a numbered entry or a spin-off like Yakuza: Kenzan. Nagoshi also said he doesn’t expect this to be the last game in the Yakuza series, but if this game isn’t a hit it may change his plans.

More proof that Zombies make everything better~! Even video games that just don’t sell too well in North America.

    This is really, really odd.

  • shion16

this smells like ” The house of the dead + lets take a good franchise to sell more “

    • M’iau M’iaut

Yup, it ain’t any more ridicalicalous than what they did with Overkill or Typing of the Dead.

Just think of Kiryu as Agent G, Tanimura as Issac Washington and dare I say Haruka as Varla Gunns…..well she did play a courtesan in Kenzan.

You could even have Tanimura like drop the Japanese F-bomb like every other word.

Of course it wouldn’ be canon but we’d play it anyway.

They better finish the series off quickly or we’ll see a Yakuza:The Pokemon ohayou! or
    Yakuza:The slice of gundam.

Some of my favorite characters in a zombie shooter spinoff. Doesn’t bother me. I’ll be getting this.

Also. There’s a type. Goro Majima isn’t the one with the gun arm. Ryuji Goda is the one with the Barret looking gun arm(bottom right picture.)

    Since it’s on the PS3, I call for a move-compatible title

    Weird spin off is weird

  • Cloud_ST

    Wow,totally unexpected xD.

  • Tokyo Guy

Wow. For a game series that doesn’t even sell Sega sure knows how to whore out IP. Though this might be interesting.

  • Guest

    This screams desperate…..and also….series killer.
wtf I hope it’s not canon to the storyline. I’m not impressed..

    • Hraesvelgr

Yeah, that’s pretty much exactly what I was going to say. Talk about jumping the shark…

  • JustAnotherTraveler

I never thought this of all series would be ruined, but well here we go. Wow. Just wow.

  • WonderSteve

Dead Rising with Kazuma? sign me up.

Hopefully they will bring this over too.

Instead of unexpected I would have used the word disappointing or lame…

Zombies vs. Yakuzas, how much hotter can it get? XD Now if the Genre wasn’t action shooter but dating sim, then I’d be awfully pleased. :>

  • Extra_Life

    April 2011 Fools!

    • http://www.nisamerica.com NickyD

      Someone gets it!

  • maxchain

Man, I’ll be furious if the hostess clubs get cut out of this one.

  • RAVENKam

So this Sega’s idea to make the series more marketable in the West? I hope not…

    • http://www.siliconera.com Jenni

      I was just thinking that!

  • Jaxx-Leviathan

This totally makes sense. It’s common knowledge that when your franchise starts dipping on the charts, you add fighting-zombies-theme and voíla: you’ve got a half-assed franchise, choked by desperate changes, but it sells because zombies are awesome and everything needs more zombies. Life needs more zombies.

  • SeventhEvening

Well, I’ll stay open minded. I have to say, I would have never guessed this, but it could still be cool.

Of course, it needs to be a non-canon spinoff. If this is supposed to be canon, things are over.

I would love to know what the motivation behind this move was? Other then Dead Rising, lol. Other then a serious WTF moment on my part, I am actually not thrown off by this at all. Yakuza is a fantastic brawler, and I would love to kick the crap out of zombies using its fighting system. I highly doubt this is a serious entry in the series, but I already hope we get it.
