Tales Of Xillia Or Tales Of Faithus, Which One Is The Name Of The Next Tales Game?

By Spencer . October 12, 2010 . 8:31pm

imageNamco Bandai has a new Tales game in development for PlayStation 3, but it doesn’t have a name. Maybe it’s going to be called Tales of Xillia.

Over in the Japanese trademark database, Namco Bandai filed five Tales of trademarks. They are: Tales of Faithus, Tales of Zestia, Tales of Xillia, and two katakana-sounding variations of it.

Since Namco Bandai trademarked variations of Xillia, we’re guessing that’s going to be the name of the next Tales game. But, out of the three Zestia, Faithus, and Xillia, which sounds the best/worse to you?

  • Darn Tales of Finality wasnt one of the choices!!!! nor Tales of Serendipity!

Tales of Zestia sounds tasty, while Tales of Xillia sounds a bit out there, lol.

    • I don’t know man. Tales of Zestia sounds like a group of people traveling the world in order to get back a stolen brand of soap. Though, who’s to say the soap doesn’t play a significance throughout the whole game. Tales of Zestia, where everyone learns the importance of one brand of soap.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Tales of Zestia does sound tasty, like some kind of wonderful dipping sauce for Tex-Mex dishes… Hey if Paul Newman could have his own salad dressing, why can’t Tales games get their own sauce?

Also, Tales of Siliconeria should be one of the choices.

      • Guest

Just as long as its not Tales of Twilight

        • But I want to catch shiny vampires!

Wait, they would be best suited for Pokemon then…

          • I just hope theres a were-chihuahua on the party.

  • Catnipcookie

    Why should we care? Not like we are going to get a US release. ._.;

    • glemtvapen

      I concur on this response.

*insert obligatory “Namco Bandai doesn’t care about Tales fans in the US” here*

      • Been out for the last couple, but don’t tempt me with the ultimate taunting…

I really one day need to figure out why everyone’s so bitter over the Tales franchise…

        • Simply put, they stopped bringing over any Tales of Games after… Radiant Mythology 1, Vesperia, and Dawn of the New World. Didn’t get Innocence, RM2, any of the remakes, Graces, VS, etc. etc. Zilch, Nada, Zero.

Even after a display of interest every time, NBG is all “LOL, we see you there, but our hands are tied. No Tales of ANYTHING for yoooooooou~. <3"

It's a crying shame, really. I'd like to say "Perhaps we only have ourselves to blame." But I'd be lying. :

          • It just strikes me as incredibly odd, because if I didn’t know better, I would be convinced there’s a special law that states that Namco-Bandai must be crucified unless a Tales game gets released in more than Japanese.

It’s also an odd situation, only because if it really is that desired, I would have thought more people would have driven towards playing a game any shape or form.

But like I said, it’s strange, particularly from my perspective, only because I actually have to do that, even though I’m not fluent in Japanese, or Russian or any other language other than English..

          • I read somewhere that when Namco started the Tales series they advertised it as a Final Fantasy killer. They are clearly not living up to that expectation in the Western World.

The difference between Square and Namco is that when Square makes a Final Fantasy, they make it a point to localize it for the West. It is always a crap shoot with Namco because when a Tales game that appeals to the West comes along, they suddenly make it a point to mention that they don’t have the money to localize anything, even though they do suddenly have enough money somehow to localize every DBZ and Naruto game that comes down the pipe when one releases in Japan.

Fans have become sick of the games that Namco plays.

          • Not a matter of crucifying them for me. I’ve enjoyed the few games that have trickled down lately, and even the ones I had to import. I… suppose I’d have a better time relating to people when I tell them about a particularly awesome Tales game rather than having to say “Well, it never got a NA release, so…”

          • It seems very desired but it’s just because Tales fans are a really LOUD minority. Myself included.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

No, don’t think that way! This one has a chance, better than the others because… because… be… um…

      Argh. Pfft. *walks away*

      • … because it doesn’t look as anime-ish and cutesy, perhaps.

Xseed said before retailers are less interested in anime games and titles with cutesy graphics these days. Of course there are exceptions like Dragon Ball and Naruto.

New graphics might make this Tales game, whatever its called, more palatable for retailers.

        • Draparde

I agree! i’ll have hope for this tales of to come to the rest of the world! even if i have to hope for everyone else too lol.

on another note i like Zestia better than Faithus…follows their often used a endings for the other ones lol,…though not saying i think it means they’ll choose that or anything

        • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Hmm, that’s somewhat reassuring. But I hope that doesn’t in turn reduce the chances of Rune Factory Oceans being localized! O_O

        • You’re right, when I first saw the graphics change I thought it was to make the game more markeable to the west.

          • epy

So.. the heavy anime stylized Tales series needs to drop one of their most defining aspects so that we, that like the Tales series because of how it is, get a chance to play it?

Sad how japanese games have to keep on losing their identity to appeal to the Holy West. Keiji Inafune would be proud.

          • I remember similar discussions when the Final Fantasy VIII designs were revealed, and look how that changed the series art style up until now.

I think we all understand the concept and importance of compromises and changes, but there are lines that should not be crossed. No matter how speculative this is right now, Tales dropping the anime look is not what I want.

          • Imagine a world where everyone is an otaku and anime is mainstream. Then everything would be perfect.

          • Joanna

eh? We don’t know if that’s the reason for the change. It could be that the developers wanted to try another style. I like anime style just as much as the next person, but the new aesthetic looked really nice, so I’m not complaining.

          • Well that could be true….if they were actually selling these games to the West…

        • superdry

All of them sound strange. I think Namco should name it Tales of US….

The whole retailers less interested in anime games (I’m guessing also anime styled) and games with cutesy graphics is always interesting. It’s weird as its a hit or miss as retailers might stock one anime/cutesy game from a publisher, but not others.

        • Guest

Well if they all use guns with chainsaws and are on steroids with crew cuts, beards and space armor and they call it Tales of War or Tales of Space Marines Tales of Honor or Tales of Duty then it’s guaranteed to go gold

    • First thing i though of

  • fuzzy_hobo

Xillia sounds best of the three. If they pick Zestia, I’m always going to think of the word zesty first…Tales of Zesty.

    • Joanna

ha, that’s what I thought as well. Zestia makes me think Zesty, which means me think food. Tales of food.

Personally I think Faithus sounds a bit better than Xillia, but both aren’t really good names.

  • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Do all the trademarks mean they’re going to make that many tales games or it’s just so that no one else will take them (as if anyone else would come up with such strange titles)?

Faithus sounds… like Engrish. I’m going to have to go with Xillia. Can’t wait to see some screenshot though!

    • Namco Bandai has an odd habit of trademarking titles in triplets, perhaps to mask the name of the real game.

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Japanese game companies are so secretive. They think they’re magicians or something. :D

        • Kibbitz

          You mean they aren’t?!?

      • Good example would be like the 2-3 variations of Graces that they filed.

  • IceRomancer

I suppose faithus sounds the best.
but since its a ps3 game hopefully it’ll make it state side.

  • Kris

I wouldn’t mind “Exilia,” particularly if the game involved exile.

  • stealingisbad

    Tales of Notbeingreleasedoutsideofjapan…ia

    • More like Tales of Graces F you Americans who will never play this.

      • Oh, we’d play it if they brought it over here.

      • Patrick de Kruijf

he! we people not living in the us or in japan can’t play it either

  • It might be 3 versions of the game…. one on the PS3,360 and Wii or 3DS….

  • Aoshi00

Not a huge fan of the Tales series (because I suck at the real time battles), but the Graces F demo was pretty awesome and looked amazing. I guess Xillia looks the coolest, Zestia and Faithus sound kind of conventional.

    • Kibbitz

Same. I did enjoy Phantasia and Destiny, but not enough to be a Tales fan in general. My preference is Xilia > Zestia > Faithus, I guess.

    • thebanditking

Yeah I’m no good at the battles either, but with enough persistence you can eventually win, lol. I just really like the series, between Sakuraba’s music, Kōsuke Fujishima’s art work they always just draw me in. Not to mention I am a sucker for games with a vibrant color palette (especially now since so many games don’t have any color)

      • Aoshi00

I really like Fujishima’s art too, like poetry in motion, definitely a selling point for the Tales series. Didn’t like anime like You’re Under Arrest because it didn’t do his art justice (anime char design was Nakajima Atsuko, Trinity Blood, Ranma 1/2, Kenshin, etc, something just bugs me about her rigid drawing). I guess the regular battles are okay, sometimes it’s the bosses that give me trouble, I just know I’m not playing as well as I should because the move list is huge and everything’s so hectic, so sometimes I just button mash. I like the light hearted character relationships and skids too, though Aspel seems a little emo compared to Yuri the bad ass, well Aspel’s voiced by Cloud so..

  • joesz

zestia: sounds like some kind of disease.
    faithus:have faith in localization.
xillia: its not bad but they can do better then this.

most likely xillia is the one that’s going to be picked.

  • RAVENKam

Xillia sounds good. An apology and localisation from NB would be better.

  • epy

I like Faithus the best. I can’t imagine a logo where “Tales of Xillia” looks good and Zestia is just … no

  • Zestia sounds best to me, but I really hope they come up with a fourth option.

  • karasuKumo

I haven’t played a 3D tales game, I absolutely loved Tales of Eternia that was an amazing game. The 2d side-scrolling battle system was perfect :D

  • Xillia. Definitely Xillia.

  • Dimentionalist

Would be nice to see this and Graces f get localized.

  • Zestia and Xillia sounds best to me. Hopefully we’ll get this title too…

  • kingkrimzon

    looks like tales of golearnjapaneseifyawantoplay

    • Dont worry Im working on it.

  • thebanditking

How about “Tales of Namco get off your *** and localize this” the proper English translation can be shortened to Tales of Localization….

  • Why name something that we will never see? As much as I want to believe it is coming to the west, I just can’t hold my breath any more T_T

  • WonderSteve

Should be called “Tales of Journey to the West”

So this series can be localized in English again for Europe and North America.

    • thebanditking

Nah if Namco called it that they would likely get Ninja Theory to develop it……..

    • That unfortunately sounds too similar to a certain Chinese story =P

Maybe that’ll add to the irony?

  • Ereek

I can’t stand reading Tales of articles. It’s like reading a broken record in every single one of them.Is there any way you can set it so that we can “hide all comments?” If not, fine, since we can hide single comments. Yes, yes, I’m aware “just don’t read the comments.” It’s a habit of mine. Also, Faithus sounds ridiculous. Zestia is okay, but I definitely prefer Xillia.

    • Sorry, there isn’t yet. And if anything I’ll apologize for the broken record since there isn’t said feature. I understand Tales fans are unhappy with the localization record, but unruly comments aren’t going to bring the games here either way.

We cover Tales on Siliconera to give the series more attention to get people, dare I say newcomers, interested in the games.

      • thebanditking

Spencer considering how stupid Namco is I doubt they have thought of this but why don’t they just translate the text for the JP releases and leave in the JP voices, this way those who want to pay the import premium can and at least read it/enjoy the story. Also why not just sell the games that way through their own website? This way fans can get the titles and Namco can avoid the retail backlash. If they sold the games half translated, through the website and limited the print run to 200K I am positive it would sell out every time, hell I would even be willing to pay $69.99 per title.

        • Or at least translate all the menus/tutorials and let the player choose which language do you want the menus in. That way importers can at least enjoy the game even if they don’t get the story. Tales of games have never being about story anyways.

          • Excuse Me? RPG games foundation is in the story, the Tales games excel at storytelling, why else play the games?

          • Joanna

I don’t know about that. I like to know what’s happening even if it’s bare bones/cliché and sometimes it’s the characters that become the reason the game is worthwhile, which still requires understanding of what is being said to appreciate.

        • I beg to differ about the 200K number, I don’t think Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World did that on its own and that was sold in stores. Limiting distribution options would further lower sales. Games carried in more stores tend to sell more because they’re accessible.

    • epy

Yep, in every Tales article we have people that complain about lack of Tales, and then we have the people that complain about the complaining in every Tales article as well.

      …broken record indeed.

      • Ereek

If that was meant as an attack towards me, I think this is only the second time ever I’ve even mentioned it.

  • AdamBoy64

We’ve got to hope for Kosuke Fujishima to be the character designer for this to get localised… the percentage of ‘his’ games that get localised compared to others is quite high.

They all sound like kinda strange names at first. But hey, I’ll get used to it. Maybe Tales of Zestia. (just thinking acronyms that are easy to say – ToZ)

    • Adam, this drawings aren’t made by Kosuke, and I’m dissappointed. It’s by the same person of ToS: KoR.

And yeah, they all do sound funny…but I think Xillia will be best, it means something in italian which I can’t remember…

      • AdamBoy64

Ooh Cool. I quite liked his designs, so that intrigues me quite a bit.
Only 51 days to go on the Countdown…
