Sony Reveal “PlayView,” A Digital Strategy Guide Service

By Ishaan . October 13, 2010 . 3:52pm

Back in June, we discovered a trademark filed by Sony for something called “Playview.” At the time, we weren’t sure what to make of it and, venturing a guess from the description, suggested it might be for some sort of online e-book store or an elaborate demo store.

It turns out, PlayView is neither. Today, Sony revealed Playview as a digital strategy guide service for games. For example, here’s a PlayView guide for Monster Hunter Freedom Unite that includes all sorts of information on the game, ranging from attacks to monsters, and even on meat quality, for 600 yen.

The catch is that you can only view PlayView guides on your PlayStation 3. We’re hoping Sony extends this service to the PSP at some point, so you can read guides for PS3 games on it while you play.

Good idea stupid execution. Dunno if theres an update for the PSP’s now to access .pdf files while playing but the Internet Browser multi-tasking on the 3DS is my favorite feature. If I’m playing a game and need help quick internet access on the same device will let me look up the answer on gamefaqs and Im right back where I left off. Charging for a digital strategy guide that can only be viewed on PS3 is extremely stupid. If I could just access digital guides for the specific games during gameplay IN the game/system that would be great.

Sooo… can you pull these up from the XMB while playing without quitting the game, look at what you need, bookmark the page, resume playing, and pull it up again anytime at the same page? Because that would be useful. Otherwise not so much.

You might be able to do some of that but you can’t do it all on the PSP since its only viewable on the PS3 so its pretty much useless.

You’re example is perfect though and I wish all games could implement this.

  • it should be like if you press like a certain combo of buttons like L+R+X it would appear

and then exit it and go right back into the game

So its basically going to be the instruction book they don’t/can’t include with DL PSP games and a strategy guide besides, but they’re going to charge you for it?

The only thing that’s lamer is that they’ve taken so long to do it.

I guess this could be useful if I already didn’t get guides for free from gamefaqs.
