Catherine And Katherine Coming To Consoles In February 2011

Looks like Catherine is going to be a few months shy of its "winter 2010" target. Atlus announced February 17 as the game’s release date, so there’s plenty of time for the publisher to better explain how Catherine plays.

The story involves Vincent, an ambitionless salaryman (called a "herbivore" in Japanese slang) who is dating Katherine with a K. After a one night stand with Catherine, Vincent begins to have nightmares with giant sheep and heart monsters. Vincent’s first appearance in the Megaten-verse was actually in Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Portable.

Catherine is being developed by the Persona team and unlike other Atlus titles, Catherine is a multiplatform game for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

    NA Release?!

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

I wish. Though I am on the Atlus forums and the mods there have hinted on multiple occasions it could be more or less simulataneous release, like some of the Trauma games and Odin Sphere. Or they could just be joking. Either way, Atlus turn-around times are usually half a year or less, if not only a couple of months.

Wait, are we even going to be getting this? Last I checked this game has just about enough content for western media to go all crazy and point the blame with “It’s precisely these types of game and imagery that harms our children and community. It’s a crime!”. I’d love to see this game in NA but…. YEAAH~…

Come on. Has the American media EVER noticed an Atlas game? Demon’s Souls is their biggest selling title EVER and try mentioning that to your average casual person. They won’t have any idea what you’re talking about. Now, if this had a Mass Effect-level marketing budget, of course, it’d be noticed, but no one in the media will say anything about this WHEN, not if, it comes here.

There was a bit of a fuss over that Agarest game on 360, due to the… uhm, risque box.Apparently, it also helped it sell more than usual (100k, for that kind of game, and on the 360 even, is pretty much unheard of), so maybe Catherine could use some scandal itself?I wouldn’t put it beyond Atlus to do something like that for attention. It would be, like, free advertising.

          • Aoshi00

More sticky foodstuff please :) They should do a Papa John’s or Domino’s tie-in or something..

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1472407455 Charles Lupula

I’m talking about the mainstream media, not the games’ media. I didn’t see Fox News raving about how awful Agarest is for your children, as they did for Modern Warfare 2 and Mass Effect.

          • Testsubject909

They’ll never touch RPGs, specifically JRPGs.

One announcer tried to touch Mass Effect for it’s lesbian sex, probably because it was part shooter, but they ultimately lost there and lost a lot of credibility for a short period of time amongst even it’s regular viewers.

They’ll only touch FPS and GTA-type Sandbox games, why? Because there’s clear violence which aids in the delivery of the controversy.

But RPGs? Too close to both movies and visual novels… That and, they’re not what the mainstream gaming audience feeds on. So the hell do they care?

Similarily, horror titles are typically ignored. And since this one is horror, they’ll do a pass on it.

Remember, the news media is cowardly and only confronts stereotypes known heavily by the masses and, at very rare occasion, touches games that are never sold, illegal to download and also only present in an entirely different country (Rapelay, I’m looking at you.)

This got a CERO C rating, mind you. It’s mostly tease material. Nothing unlike what we get on night-time television every day of the week.

Atlus USA will localize this, just a matter of time.

        • Zeik56

At most this will get the attention of 2 or 3 internet bloggers who wish they could start up a controversy and get attention, but nobody will pay any real attention.

Even if it did get attention though I don’t see it doing any harm. As mentioned, this is only a Cero C game, meaning there isn’t any actual nudity in the game, and if/when it comes over an M rating is pretty much guaranteed. There’s nothing anyone can really do to the game. To be honest if it did happen it would probably even benefit the game, as it would give the game some much needed advertisement.

Persona 3 made it over here with no censorship, no media controversy, Evokers and all. What, 3 times now (all the different versions)?

With it’s direct connection to the Persona universe, Persona’s huge (relatively) success in the West, and Catherine’s story seeming to take place in America (+all the characters have English names), this game was practically made with the west in mind as much as Japan.

February 17th is now marked on my calendar!
Too bad it’s not going to be released on February 14th in Japan. It would be the perfect Valentine’s day gift. :D

    • Aoshi00

I’m not sure if it’s a very good V-day gift w/ the adultery and stuff lol.. or it’s like the gf saying “don’t cheat or you ain’t getting any” :)

  • pridesin

Hmm… so, it will be release at the same month when the Disgaea 4 will be release. I wonder if it can be release in the U.S on summer 2011, too.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_TZCIPIPXSXDZZEGU5VG6BGQUHE Josh

The release date was always “this winter”, not winter 2010.

    • http://www.facebook.com/vileta Dave Vileta

mind explaining this “2010WINTER” business, as seen in Famitsu?

      • swissroll

Does Winter not start from December until February?
February still counts as “2010Winter”. If it doesn’t then what does that make January and February of next year? “2011Winter” with December also being “2011Winter” at the end of the year?

        • hadjimurad

          yes. no. yes. yes. :^)

        • http://www.facebook.com/vileta Dave Vileta

Doesn’t matter, the point is that they indeed said “2010Winter” and not simply “This winter”. The interpretation of what Winter 2010 includes is irrelevant to the original post.

    • http://www.siliconera.com Spencer

I beg to differ. The promotional materials for Catherine, including a poster Atlus is giving away over Twitter says “Winter 2010″

Can’t wait for this to happen.

  • cj_iwakura

I have a feeling we’re getting a simultaneous release of this.

Come on, the entire cast is American.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Hey are you the dood with the same moniker on the Atlus forums?

EDIT: Sorry it just kind of occurred to me.

      • cj_iwakura

If you find someone else with my initials that’s a Lain fan, I expect you to strike them down on sight. :P

  • xenonism

Atlus: make it playable in English, please!

  • Ladius

I would like some more actual gameplay informations, but it’s almost surely a day one purchase for me :D

  • hadjimurad

before i dated and married my wife, i was with a blonde Catherine… i don’t think my wife is going to appreciate this game!

  • http://twitter.com/Buuhan1 Kyle Fedora

So Vincent cheated on his girlfriend and as divine retribution is having horrific nightmares. Serves him right. I was looking forward to this game, but now knowing I’m gonna hate the main character, I’m less than crazy about it. Either way, rather you hate him or not, following such a plot this story is definitely not gonna end well for Vincent.

  • doubleO7

    lol “…a one nightstand…”

  • Cucumber_man

    Awesome

It looks really nice, i wonder what this game’s about.
