Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2 Sold 16 Times Better On PS3 Than Xbox 360 In Japan

By Spencer . November 18, 2010 . 8:06pm

imageEchoing the Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 sales figures, Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2 sold 16 times better on PlayStation 3 than Xbox 360 during its first week on the sales charts.

Media Create reports retailers moved 47,610 units of Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2 on PlayStation 3 making it the number two game of the week. The Xbox 360 version made its debut at #38 with 3,000 units.

First week sales are similar to last year when Dragon Ball: Raging Blast came out. Namco Bandai charged up and hit the PlayStation 3 with a 58,000 unit sales combo, but could not exceed 9,000 units on Xbox 360. Retailers only sold 7,000 units of Raging Blast.

  • Namco Bandai is excellent with these types of games. I love em!

Why is this news? 360 is dead in Japan. Only people that use it are really for those cheaply niche Anime like import titles that are often ports of PC visual novel games or too low budget to be accepted onto the PS3 anyway let alone the developer not having enough in the budget to design on the PS3 platform which is costlier.

    • Tom_Phoenix

Yeah, I fail to see how this is much of a suprise at all. The 360 is practically a non-factor in Japan. It is preety much a given that any multiplatform title will sell better on other platforms than on the 360.

That said, 3,000 is really bad even by the standards of the limited Japanese 360 market. Even Western titles such as Medal of Honor and Red Dead Redemption managed to sell about 25,000 on the platform during their debut.

    • PrinceHeir

aww man i would die happy if they release some if not all of the Shumps and Visual Novels from 360. like Stein;Gates, Requiem of Phantom, Otomedius Excellent, Dream C Club and so on.

at least Mamorukun(shump) is coming for the PS3, guess this will be a sign for things to come.

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Hey, 360 users deserve some exclusives you know.

EDIT: Not that, as a PS3 user, I wouldn’t like some of those exclusives, but I’m a firm believer of *some* exclusive content should exist to prevent all 3 consoles from being the same. Also, good exclusives make loyal users, loyal users keep each console alive, keeping each console alive means competition, and competition is good for the market/consumer. Sorry if that felt like a rant, and I can’t argue that the PS3 lacks shmups.

        • 360 users get Halo + every other obvious exclusive games. So I don’t know what you’re talkin about.

        • And also keeping alive fanboyism. Thus, keeping trolls full.

          • Aoshi00

I’m just a fan of games though and like each system to have its unique library (also I hate to do research when it comes to getting multiplatform games like which ver has better loading times, DLCs, etc…but I usually stick w/ 360 just to be safe). I mean yea the more people get to play it the better, but all the games being on all systems just feel so boring.. it’s like PSP has its own games and DS has it own, that’s what makes the system different.

          • I know what you mean. I’m the same. Still, fanboys will be fanboys; trolls gonna be trolling; haters gonna hate.

          • You do not believe in the one console future?

          • Aoshi00

Do I want to see the Wii, PS3, or the Xbox 360 die off like the Sega Dreamcast? Not really. Nor am I particular interested in OnLive. I can’t imagine the day w/ only 1 console and no competition. No consoles at all would be a different matter.

          • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

As you say yourself, “fanboys will be fanboys”. You will always have zealous fanatics, even if the differences between the consoles are negligible. It’s simply the nature of some people to defend their choice of *anything to death* and lord it over others. Baseballs teams, cars, shoe brand, television brand, *specific model* of television, Computer OS, you name it.

      • PrinceHeir

i know2 is just that is just that those game weren’t really system sellers especially for a platform that rarely has a presence minus a few games like Dream C Club. though i guess they were able to make this game since it’s much the development is much more cheaper and it’s closer to the PC’s structure.

heck i would probably by a 360 just for these type’s of games plus Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

It seems like an update on the current state of the 360. I think it’s nearing rock bottom. It makes me wonder if Microsoft will try to do anything about it soon, or feel that they don’t need the Japanese market and have just given up with it like they did with the original xbox.

      • Aoshi00

I think the 360 still has a presence in Jpn, based on what I watch from Inside Xbox Jpn, I would’ve thought it’s doing really well, they put quite a lot of effort into the Jpn market I think. Am I like the only person who watches those things on Jpn Live :)? They constantly do updates of demoing games and interviewing developers thruout the week. Sensui is a pretty cool guy too.I don’t know why people keep complaining about the exclusives though, I certainly don’t want to have the exact same library on my PS3 or 360. Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey were actually what hooked me into getting a Jpn 360 and it just ended up being my favorite system w/ such a variety of games, VNs/dating sims, shmups, all the mulitplaform games, and XBLA titles (Limbo, Shadow Complex, anyone?). Too many PS3 owners here keep dissing the 360.. I have all 5 systems (3 consoles and 2 portables) and love them all, and keep looking forward to good games to be on all of them..

People keep saying they don’t want to buy a system for certain games, it’s like if you want to play Zelda, Donkey Kong, Last Story, you’re going to get a Wii. If you want shmups and other stuffs you get a 360, just like Saturn and Dreamcast all had exclusives and made those systems special..

        • Arent you over generalizing? I think people are just indicating the lack of apparent fan support of the console in places named Japan. Ive heard unbounded praise for the system on this here site, 2d-shooter fans apparently love the console. How many is too many? Not 0?

          • Aoshi00

Well, the 360 owners here are certainly happy about the shmups, but the PS3 owners always complain about not having those shmups all the time and refuse to get a 360. It’s like you’re mad about not being able to play Donkey Kong Country Returns on either the 360 or PS3 because it’s a Nintendo game. Just get a 360, it’s not that expensive. I guess a Jpn one is and could run you over $400.Saying Naruto and Dragonball don’t sell on the 360 in Jpn means nothing, people didn’t buy the 360 for these anime based fighters, they get it for Halo/Gears or War/Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey/Blue Dragon (and Eternal Sonata, Star Ocean4, Vesperia, etc at least before they got ported to PS3), visual novels/shmups, and other exclusive XBLA titles. I don’t care much for Naruto or DB games either, but if I were to get them, I would get it on 360 for my preference of its controller and achievement, and the ability to install these games onto my HDD. I’m sure most Jpn gamers just feel safe sticking w/ Sony and Nintendo, but it seems like they’re more open to Western games compared to several years ago. And I’m not sure if things are looking as grim for the 360 as the original Xbox before. I still see a lot of quality games on it and they certainly do market it, the bottom line is they are trying their best, instead of giving up on the Jpn market like everyone else wanted. Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey was actually part of that effort, but JRPGs seems like a niche now even in Japan compared to the more blockbuster sellers and stapled franchises like Pokemon, Mario, or “Final Fantasy”.People say they need this or that to motivate them to finally get a certain system. Personally I like dozens of games on each system, that’s why I own all 3 of them, so I won’t miss out on any games.PS. It’s funny Jimmy Fallon keeps plugging the 360 :) He was playing Kinect Sports w/ Amada Peet last night, hawt :)

          • andref

You have a point, each console IMO has a certain genre it is best for. When thinking of Naruto and DBZ, for a long time they never showed up on an xbox or xbox 360. The first Naruto game xbox owners received was from Ubisoft and the first DBZ game was that cruddy action/adventure title. Next we got burst limit and raging blast 1 and 2. Playstation owners and even nintendo owners got the dragon ball budokai series which never came over to the original xbox

          • Aoshi00

Exactly, all the past Ultimate Ninja games were on the PS2 and PSP and Gamecube and Wii had Gekitou Ninja Taisen, so fans of those games would just continue to get them on PS3 even if they have both systems. 360 owners are probably not even aware of those games or interested in them anyway.. It’s not like there’s no 360 owners in Jpn, they just play different games like the 360 exclusives.

        • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Haha sorry I don’t have a 360 and thus no LIVE. My impressions only come from articles every now and then like this one, or charts and stuff showing the sales ratio each week/month.

And I hope I didn’t come off sounding like I was dissing the 360… I was merely commenting on what I thought was happening. If it’s not, then that’s good news for 360 owners everywhere. I see no reason why I’d want the 360 to fail…

Not to be overly agreeable either but I do agree (XD) if people want certain exclusives that should just get the system its for rather than wishful thinking it will come to what they own.

          • Aoshi00

Nah, I didn’t mean to direct my comment at you, you’re above that :) It’s just that people keep saying nobody owns a 360 in Jpn and MS might as well give up, why? I can see that most Jpn gamers like to stick w/ Sony and Nintendo (and portables), that’s fine, but there’s a certain segment of Jpn gamers who like Western games and FPS as the genre is growing to be slightly more popular (at least the word “you-ge” no longer has the negative connotation as it once had, now people think about cool games like Heavy Rain or Red Dead Redemption, they recognize these are quality game and don’t just dismiss them as boring western games). Also MS is bringing visual novels, dating sims, JRPGs (at least they pushed really hard at the beginning), shmups, etc to cater to Jpn fans, it’s like the Saturn or Dreamcast back in the days, I definitely appreciate their effort. I don’t care about IdolMaster much, but Dream Club is really awesome I swear :) If you ever get a 360, you should make a Jpn account to watch some of those videos on Jpn Xbox Live, they’re really fun, the hosts always demo new releases and introduce upcoming releases and interview producers and directors (I swear it would be worth it, the girl Hikari-chan is very cute, recently they’re playing Kinect which is out in Jpn tmw 11/20), I thought they’re working really hard instead of like everyone said no one cares, even Sony doesn’t do that on PSN, we just have Christina Lee going down a list. Qore does that but it’s a subscribed magazine. If there are games people want to play on a system, definitely just get it instead of whining about it for years (why are all the shmups an VNs on the “dying 360” in Jpn? heard so many times now..). I’m not rich either, but I could afford to have more than 1 system.. Personally I would even say Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey would make the 360 worth owning as a JRPG fan, they would never been ported.PS. you know what I’m thinking when I’m typing all this time? Momoiro Punch is still stuck on my mind lol

          • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

It’s good that Japan is opening up to quality western games. I hope that one day mainstream gaming in the US too, will see past superficial visuals to quality Japanese games. I’ll be sure to watch Hikari-chan if/when I get a 360.

… Noooo why did you bring up Momoiro Punch… now it’s back on my gaahhh

          • Aoshi00

Cuz the darn song was just so catchy. You know it’s powerful when even the manly Matsuda Yusaku utters “Mooooee” while chain smoking :)Yea you should check it out if you have a chance. They just put up a Kinect launch special video, the hosts went on location where Team Kinect (the two sisters from SKE48, Matsui Rena and Matsui Jurina) were filming for the commercial playing Dance Masters/Evolution, very cute girls, especially Rena (doh now I remember that creepy PSP dating sim w/ real idols lol). They were doing the stupid Mutoh Keiji pro wrestler pose too and this gag pose (like DBZ’s Ginyu lifting one foot off the ground), so cute. http://www.xbox.com/ja-JP/campaign/kinect/homeI thought this one was funny,http://www.myvido1.com/gYx4EWRJTOTRmMoBTWtdWP_matsui-jurina-matsui-rena-cm-microsoft-kJust plugging their new single, Rena’s on the left..http://www.myvido1.com/wYycmMZhVUwUVMKZUZFFVP_ske48-4th-sg20101117

  • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Is that a record? I hope this doesn’t offend anybody, but no wonder many Japanese devs don’t even bother doing a 360 port for some games (DW7). O_O

    • Barrit

Scroll a few stories down on the main page. It’s only PS3 exclusive to Japan, but other regions are getting a 360 release.

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

No need to jump me, I am perfectly aware. By jumping me you miss the point. ^_^I was simply reminded of many games that have PS3 exclusivity in Japan (my example being DW7, another was FFXIII for a while), I never understood the exact reasons, but this kind of ratio made it clear to me was what I was saying.

EDIT: More and more Japanese developers are doing Wii + PS3 because that’s what sells in Japan.

        • Barrit

Sorry, I didn’t mean it to come off as a jump! I totally missed your keywords “Japanese devs”.. sorry about that. I definitely see your point and totally agree.

          • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

            No hard feelings. ^_^

    • HarryHodd

Seems like we are seeing this more and more in japan. PS3 exclusive then it may or may not get a port for outside of Japan

  • MemeticRichard

Well, like they say…there’s no kill like overkill.

Except, overkill doesn’t even begin to put it mildly in this case…

  • kupomogli

Good thing Namco came out with a demo of this garbage game. Saved myself $60. If you’re interested in the game, either buy Raging Blast which is much better or Tenkaichi 2 or 3 which is even better than that.

  • hush404

    WAit… they’re still making dragonball games? ;)

  • MarkMario

Too much Dragonball, series ended awhile ago.

    • more like almost a decade or two ago.

  • Did Bardock just kick Goku’s manhood?

  • I really don’t see how this is news especially since it’s basic knowledge about japan now. Anything multiconsoled sells like crack for the ps3 in japan(even if they’re is issues like Bayonetta) and not so much on the Xbox 360, yet exclusives or import titles flourish on the 360.

  • neo_firenze

I think it’s more useful to have some context – we really need to see worldwide sales figures to get the whole picture. I’m sure the 360 versions of these games sell a whole lot better outside of Japan, and it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see the 360 versions significantly outselling the PS3 ones in the US.

It’s not as if Namco Bandai doesn’t realize that the PS3 is going to be the dominant version in Japan. They just know that it’s also worth making a 360 version due to the overseas sales, even if it fails to compete in the Japanese market.

  • I’m still trying to figure out why this is good either way. Only 47,000 copies in it’s first week. So where NUNS2 may hit 100,000. This game is not going to at all. I’m not sure what Namco thought they were going to get for these games. It does seem really hard for them to make those numbers. Both games are selling bad in their home countries. Also they are doing below average in the US.

    • Um whats below average? What is this average value you are using?

Is this really a surprise to anyone? Japan doesn`t give the X360 the time of day. Who seriously would be surprised by this? Sure it`s a bit sad to see it outsold by so much when it is the same exact game but still…
