Twin Blades Finds New Home On PlayStation 3 And PSP

By Spencer . November 19, 2010 . 3:40pm

Indie developer Press Start Studio has an anime stylized, zombie shooting, and scything game called Twin Blades. You control Sister Angelika who exchanges zombie hearts for artillery. Upgrade her gun to shoot fire, laser beams, and some kind of instant freezing substance.

Does Twin Blades look familiar? Press Start Studio originally released it for Xbox Live Arcade. Sanuk Games, the studio behind Barnyard Blast, is porting it to PlayStation 3 and PSP by turning Twin Blades into a PlayStation Mini.

I actually accidentally purchased this on XBLIG a while back, half asleep thinking I was just dling the demo, but actually confirmed the purchase instead. Umm… it’s pretty shallow and repetitive, but better than some of the indie games in the Xbox store. Just a huge gargantuan step below something like Castle Crashers or Scott Pilgrim.

    • Code

Most beat`em up’s are a gargantuan step below Scott Pilgrim >w<'

      • mikanko

well then, this is 2 or 3 gargantuan steps below Scott Pilgrim =/

      • I dunno, Scott Pilgrim demo didn’t seem anywhere as fun as River City Ransom.

        • Code

rar, well your bring a whole different tier to the table now though >w<' Although Scott Pilgrim with 4-people is hard to beat when it comes to beat`em ups, definitely up there with the greats.

          • Four player co-op… actually sounds fun.

          • Code

Oh man I didn’t realize you said the demo!? Maan 4-player co-op, with like nine amazing stages, survival modes, boss rushes — trust me the demo is only the tip of the iceberg, if you like beat`em up’s it’s a must well worth the price of admission xwx~! Although admittedly single player is a bit slow, the game really shines with multiple people. The only real lacking part is no online play, but overall definitely a great game, highly recommend.

recently this formula have been used once and again for easy moneyanime style characters + zombies + blood = victory ???

    • Code

I played it, I like the visual look of the game, and figured co-op light gun shooter — I’m willing to try this! It was a little repetitive, and shallow too, but for the one instance I had a good co-op game of it, it earned it’s keep >w<'

Dangit, you said the exact same thing I wanted to, only faster and to the point. You weren’t there when I started typing it!! Tactical Espionage Code!! >_<

(I just need to stop taking so long with my posts and stop typing things longer than 3 sentences… Argh this is already longer than 3 sentences.)

        • Code

          haha, I’m usually the one with run on sentences too, lol >w<; This happens to me a lot though sometimes I'll go to post and then I realize you, or Aoshi, has already said it, although it happens with a good variety of people on here, similar interest maybe? lol opo;

          • Aoshi00

Great minds think alike lol :)? Yea, it’s great to find people who share similar taste. And yes, Scott Pilgrim (game/movie/comic) rules! Although I still haven’t played thru w/ Still and Ramona to get NegaScott and the 200 achievement…

I haven’t tried Twin Blades.. for some reason when I saw the article’s title I was excited about “The Last Blade” (Gekka no Kenshi) being on PSN…

          • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

ANY Snk fighters on the PSN would be… nice… T_T

          • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Can’t edit so double post, but a PSOne version of Kof ’99 hardly qualifies… It’s a port of a port with missing animation frames. Also, JPN got Dark Awake/ Chaos Breaker and I don’t think that will make it here. The last time I played Last Blade (2) was on the Dreamcast… that thing had such a godly library of fighting games…

          • Aoshi00

Yea, 2D sprite fighters are the best aren’t they, like Samurai Shodown (Sen was horrible chopping people’s arms off…). Truth is I was never good at fighters, I just like how they look, I got both Blazblue but I doubt I would get many achievements.. that’s why I feel it’s such a lost opportunity when they announced the new Rurouni Kenshin game as a PSP 3D fighter, let’s face it, chances that it’s going to suck.. I’m guessing 80%… They should just let Treasure do a 2D fighter like Bleach on the DS. Their YuYu Hakusho fighting game on the Mega Drive was so good.

          • Aoshi00

Oh yea, I just checked out the Jpn PSN and saw Dark Awake, I think I’ll wait a little bit, maybe it would make it to the import store like the recent shmups or puzzle games, even that fighter Suiko Genbu made it you know. I never played the game, just checked out this video, is it any good? Kind of like Golden Axe mixed w/ Guardian Heroes.. I hope it does make it here, PSN Plus members get it for half price too, so far I’ve only gotten Cho Aniki for 3 bucks, haven’t played it yet..

          • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

I haven’t had a chance to play Dark Awake, but I know it’s made by the korean developer Eolith, who handled KoF for a short while… So don’t know if it’s good, but the fighting doesn’t look broken, the animation is pretty, and the game has 2D sprites. Isn’t that pretty much a purchase for a PSN game? XD

          • Aoshi00

Gotcha, looks good.. for your info, I reward you w/ this video.. I’m leading you to a dangerous path, let your dormant moe yearning awaken :) BTW, I take back calling AKB/SKE48 stupid, call me shallow but I do dig these songs..1!2!3!4! Yoroshiku! (never seen so many school girls before) should drive Momoiro Punch out of your mind.. (I blame Siliconera for getting me into this stuff lol..) I just wish I were 10yrs younger so I would feel more “appropriate” listening to these stuff :)

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

I did. It was lacking in gameplay variety and level layout while the story mode should have been custom for each character, but I liked the look and the idea behind it. Beat it one time through with a friend in one sitting. Wouldn’t do it a second time but I pretended we were at an arcade with a bag load of quarters.

Making zombie games is the best way to get attention for smaller devs. Fortunately, there are plenty of indie devs also not interested in making zombie games.

    • MisterNiwa

Is Kiryu an anime style character?

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Ha. I’d say he’s a Takashi Miike style character.

  • Pesmerga00

I saw Twin Blades, a guy in a red outfit with hat, for PS3. Then I got excited. Then I read the article. :(

    (cough,hack,cough) excuse me.

  • Looks interesting, seems like it might be fun, and if it doesn’t cost a lot (or if it’s ever on sale on PSN (which will probably happen)), I’ll most likely buy it. If anything, I’d be doing it just to support an indie dev.

  • JustaGenericUser

Hmm, I hope it has some Metroidvania elements, a little exploring and interaction would be nice.
