These Eight Characters Are Playable In Rurouni Kenshin: Saisen

By Spencer . November 30, 2010 . 1:17am

imageAside from Kenshin, who else will you be able to use in Rurouni Kenshin: Saisen? Famitsu’s preview of the PSP fighting game confirms eight characters.

Himura Kenshin, Kamiya Kaoru, Myojin Yahiko, Sagara Sanosuke, Saito Hajime, Shinomori Aoshi, Udo Jin-e, and Isurugi Raijuta are playable in Rurouni Kenshin: Saisen.

The article also explains the game’s special technique system. Each strike fills up a character’s sword spirit gauge. When its full, press the L button to trigger a super move and a flashy movie. Notice the ink effect in the screenshot? That comes up when you dish out regular combos during a fight.

Rurouni Kenshin: Saisen is slated for a spring 2011 release in Japan.

    Futae no kiwami, YAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!

    I’m saddened. No Shishio.

    • neocatzon

it has Udo Jin-e. If they include the very first boss of the series then there’s a hope for Shishio, I think

  • WizardoftheBlueOrder

I’d be more interested if Enishi were playable.

Though I will admit that I’m disappointed by the lack of Shishio arc characters.

    • [The Hunter] Doomrider

I hear they didn’t include him because he would break the game.

      (No, I didn’t.)

      • Aoshi00

The PSP wouldn’t last 15 mins if Shishio is in there, not to mention breaking the PSP Go in half :)!

  • Aoshi00

Is that the whole roster? I hope there’d be a story mode. Will need to wait for review on this even though I’m glad RK’s making a comeback in some form..

    • [The Hunter] Doomrider

I hope so too, but I’m not expecting more than a visual novel kind of thing unfortunately (for me, at least)…Other than that, I wasn’t expecting Jin-E and Raijuta at all.

Edit: Hey, I was thinking: you know what would be awesome? If they used actual manga pages to tell the story, maybe turn it into a kind of motion comic.

      • Aoshi00

yea, that would be kind of cool, if they do that they should color the manga panels too (I think they did that in some Dragonball games before, recreating the cutscenes from manga). But that would be a bit cheap.. On the PSP, it’s probably going to be just text, I don’t think they would put the effort making it look like MGS. I can’t wait to listen to Kenshin yell “Jineeeeeeee!” (Suzukaze Mayo is back for the role right?) Raijuuta was a little unexpected since he was a bit of a smally fry.. The game looks good, but I have a feeling this is a cheap cash-in.. And Saitou’s Gatotsu would never sound the same :(…

I just look at the anime Kenshin pic before the jump, I think that looks pretty good, probably some anime cuts when the chars do their special moves. Maybe I’d just buy this game anyway regardless of quality to support Kenshin.. wonder if they would do some LE too..

        • [The Hunter] Doomrider

I think it would be cheaper of them to just slap character portraits and tons of text… If they used the manga, at least we would be able to experience it again, in some form!

Kenshin isn’t really Kenshin without her voice, so she must be in… I think it will be a quick cash-in as well. That’s the norm with licensed games, generally and unfortunately. But still, it looks good!

Man, I was so sad when I heard that Hirotaka Suzuoki died =/

          • Aoshi00

yea, one of the coolest voices ever, Saitou, Shiryuu, Kuno, Capt Bright, that guy was my childhood.. died so young too at 50 something.. Must’ve been tough for Furuya Tohru (Amuro, Seiya, Yamcha, Tuxedo Mask) who was his best friend.. I can’t wait to hear the rest of the cast too, they should be in since most seiyuu are still active, Suzukaze’s not a seiyuu, hopefully the role means something to her and they pay her enough :)

          • [The Hunter] Doomrider

            Bah, it sucks.

Oh, I didn’t know that. Let’s hope so! Ok, I just saw a few screens from the game, and indeed, the story mode is in a visual novel style. Lame… BUT, I think the game looks really good.

There are, as you predicted, anime cuts when they’re about to go ougi on the opponent’s ass, which is a nice touch =) The backgrounds look interesting and faithful to the anime and you can lose/drop your weapon (like in Samurai Showdown). That’s what I gathered from the screens.

    • Nah, I don’t think this is the whole roster, just the first batch of announced characters. There’s so much time between the spring release window we’ll probably hear about characters in waves. (I hope!)

      • Aoshi00

Hopefully more to come, otherwise Raijuuta would be the latest villain up to that point :) Game’s looking good so far w/ the ink effect.

  • epy

I am surprised Raijuta is playable since pretty much no one liked him. But yeah, I’m sure all fighting characters of up to the Shishio arc will be playable, including the entire Juppon Gatana (ok, maybe not Houji), Shishio, Misao and hopefully Okina, cause he was so badass.

  • Aara_Malik_Davoodi

I’m thinking that can’t really be all the characters. Even for a PSP games that’s a light roster

  • BadenBadenPrinny

    Juppongatana where? :(

  • I want to pwn Seta Soujirou, Juppongatana right now! :D

    Don’t forget the Kenwadan lol

  • gatotsu911

Will Raijuta not be a complete wuss this time around?

  • Guest

If theyre gonna make a Kenshin PSP gsme they might as well make a Yu Yu Hakusho and Saint Seiya PSP game; hell make a Devilman one too

    • doomspeller10

I’d be more than satisfied with a Hunter X Hunter game, even if it is only up to the Genei Ryodan arc. The complex nen system woul allow for a really interesting fighting/action game with rpg elements, and obviously for some really nice ad-hoc battles… even cooperative gameplay.

      • Aoshi00

Hunter x Hunter game would be awesome, so much material to be done, Gen’ei Ryodan, Greed Island (story is a game itself w/ so many rules), and Chimera Ant, I think they did GI on the Wonder Swan, but who has that system you know. I alrdy bought 3 out of the 4 TV series boxsets, just waiting for the last one to drop in price on Amazon :)

        • doomspeller10

Yep. I know there’s a wonderswan game out there, also a GBA one and some for the PSone (if I remember well) and the PS2, but as far as I know, none of them have been localized. A pity indeed.

  • doomspeller10

Saito will be present? I’m sold. Hopefully they take visual ideas from the anime and not much from the Naruto games, they’re good, but there’s also something called originality.

  • karasuKumo

8 characters! Wow don’t hurt yourselves!

That screen looks nice though so it’s not all bad.

  • Needs more Soujiro, he was one of my favorite characters, right next to Yahiko. I mostly just hope the battle system brings more to the table than “Charge your final technique” though. The game doesn’t have to light the world on fire, but the swordsmanship concepts explored in the manga were so tight that the gameplay should be just as well-tuned D:
