First Details On Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception Unearthed

By Ishaan . December 9, 2010 . 8:02am

Entertainment Weekly’s pop-culture website, PopWatch, has managed to get an exclusive first look at Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception for the PlayStation 3.

Drake’s Deception will explore Drake’s relationship with his mentor-cum-father figure, Victor Sullivan, and will see Drake searching for a legendary lost city that will take him to the Arabian Peninsula and the wasteland of the Rub’ al Khali Desert.

The game focuses on the theme of deception, which, according to Naughty Dog creative director, Amy Hennig, will “play out in multiple ways” during the course of the game, from “Drake doing the deceiving to Drake being deceived to some mysterious deception about Drake’s very identity.”

Additionally, Naughty Dog also confirmed that they are investing effort in the game’s co-op and online multiplayer modes, and hope to compete in this regard with other high-profile multiplayer games on the market.

While Sony haven’t announced an official release date for Uncharted 3 yet, PopWatch expect to see it release in late 2011. Head over to their site for more concept images and details. A world premiere for the game will take place this Saturday during the Video Game Awards.

  • Game of the Year 2011!!!!

I didnt even expect it to be revealed so soon! My 2011 has now just became another prolific year! Now this is why, the Sony platform is the one of choice. This series, is just, so awesome.

I cant wait to see how they push the graphical barriers this time. The character models look great, the multiplayer is still addictive (cant believe Ive spent over 360 hours on it !!!) and the story, simply fantastic. I even made through another playthrough on Easy difficulty (after finishing it on very easy, which was not without challenge)

Wow next year is awesome for PS3!
    Motorstorm Apocolypse
    Killzone 3
    Infamous 2
    The Last Guardian
    Twisted Metal
    Uncharted 3
    Resistance 3

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Sand is one of the hardest things to render believably in a game. I’m sure it will impress the heck out of me too. I can’t believe they’re releasing it in 2011 though…

In addition to LBP, Motorstorm, and Uncharted as you listed, here’s the games I’m anticipated for 2011 on my PS3.

      Duke Nukem Forever
      Ar Tonelico Qoga
      I Am Alive
      Yakuza 4
      L.A. Noire
      El Shaddai
      Dirt 3
      True Crime: Hong Kong
      Armored Core 5
      Batman: Arkham City
      Alice: Madness Returns
      Saints Row 3
      King of Fighters XIII

Other games I want that might or might not make it here 2011:
      Tomb Raider Reboot
      Final Fantasy Versus XIII
      Rune Factory Oceans
      The Last Guardian
      Nino Kuni
      Disaster Report 4

      (Yes I have eclectic taste)
Man I can’t believe all these games are coming out in 1 year! This could be the best year for memorable games since 2001!

      • I think Im also close to 20 or 30 games on PS3 I want next year, its already looking to be a pricey year (Plus Im still trying to catch up with this year, Vanquish and Alpha Protocol are all that I need).

        • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Yea gonna have to wait for price drops on some of these, for sure… that and I’ll never get through my back log at this rate but I can’t stop the good games from coming and my wallet from emptying. T_T

          • Woot just preorder Uncharted 3 on amazon. I hope the US gets a special edition this time that can be bought, I wasnt up for trying to win one of the 1000 special editions they had here…

      • I am not 100% sure SNK will be smart enough to port KOF XIII. They’ve been making a lot of stupid decisions the last few years.

        • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Aw c’mon now. I know they’re senseless at making business decisions, but from what I’ve seen XIII is a success at the arcades+local tournaments and praised by players. They’ve patched it to removed much of the game breaking bugs, showing they do care, plus people are still playing it so many months after release (XII died off in a few weeks). The game’s endings are already in English. Besides, they *need the money*. Maybe we’ll find out in that SNK interview Siliconera’s gonna do.

          • I hope you’re right, honestly, because it looks like they totally made up for XII. But this is SNK we’re talking about. lol

    • Neckbear

Honestly, I hate posts like this.

It’s like you HAVE to word out every game that’s coming out in a PS3; even those you do NOT like.

Guess it’s just natural rejection against fanboyism of some kind (IF you could call it that…)

      • Dude what are you talking about? I wouldnt list a game that I wouldnt be buying. Sony has been pretty hot this generation that one I would be foolish to pass up getting these epic entries in such phenomenal titles for the next year.

        • Neckbear

I’ll be passing up most of them, though. They don’t really appeal to me. The only ones that are a sure buy are inFamous 2 and Uncharted 3, perhaps.

          • Well, then make your own list. Show us what you are interested in.

      • Where did he list games that he didn’t like? You may not like them, but as I said, make your own list then.

    • malek86

Wow, you sure are interested in a lot of stuff. I have all five consoles, and my “interested in” list for 2011 isn’t even half of yours.

For some reason, I find it difficult to be interested in the stuff everybody is hyping. I usually end up not buying anything, generally picking up obscure stuff from the year before, or something old at very low prices.

    • If I had to put my list together, it’d be:

Mass Effect 2 (which damn well better be as good as the 360 people make it out to be)
      Dead Space 2
      Ar Tonelico
      Yakuza 4
      Infamous 2
      Last Guardian
      Twisted Metal
      Uncharted 3
      El Shaddai
      Ico Collection
      Arkham City
      Portal 2
      Disgaea 4

Then there’s stuff I’m not sure if it’ll be released in 2011, like KOF XIII, Arcana Hearts 3, Nino Kuni, Catherine, and Versus XIII.

      Also on the fence about

      Duke Nukem Forever
      L.A. Noire
      Resistance 3

      • Wow if were listing things then I guess I will my full (PS3) list, lol (well whats confirmed)

        Mass Effect 2
Marvel Vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds
        Dues Ex: Human Revolution
        Dragon Age 2
        Dungeon Siege III
ICO and Shadow of the Colossus Collection
        Portal 2
        Motorstorm Apocalypse
        Killzone 3
        Infamous 2
        The Last Guardian
        Twisted Metal
        Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
        Resistance 3
        Metal Gear Solid Rising
        Hyperdimension Neptunia
Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel
        Disgaea 4
        No More Hero’s Paradise
Need for Speed Shift 2: Unleashed
        Ace Combat: Assault Horizon
        Tomb Raider
        Batman Arkham City
        Record of Agarest War Zero
        Mass Effect 3

I really need to save this somewhere since some arent listed on Amazon.

        • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

This came off the top of your head? Dang I wrote mine down in a txt file and I update it regularly. I can’t believe I forgot about the ICO collection and I’m not sure if Ace Combat Assault Horizon is coming in 2011.

          • I thought the Ace Combat teaser trailer said 2011? I really want it as there are no other good flight type games available (HAWX is terrible!!!)

        • Totally forgot about No More Heroes. Add that.

Also, if the rumors about the PS3 version of Peace Walker being revealed this weekend are true, then add that.

Oh, and Metal Gear Solid: Rising, too, even if that looks like it’ll be a little too action-centric.

          • Theres a PS3 version of Peace Walker coming? Wow. The action part of MGS Rising is why I want to try it, I hope we get an MGS collection as well then I could finally play the other games. I know Im going to hate getting Dragon Age 2 on day 1, but it probably depends on if I can get through Dragon Age Origins in time.

I guess RDR will get a Game of the Year edition, lol.

        • And as far as Dragon Age 2 goes, they are NOT fooling me again this time. I am waiting for the “Ultimate” edition like I should have done with the first one, instead of paying as much money for DLC as I did.

Same reason I haven’t picked up Red Dead Redemption or Fallout: New Vegas yet.

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Yea doesn’t look like Nino Kuni will make 2011… Catherine might.

  • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Wasn’t there some guy’s unofficial art project called Uncharted 3: World of Deceit? And even though that wasn’t real, now the real theme is indeed going to be deception? Either that guy was a great guesser or something more was going on.

What Amy Hennig described sounds very… Bond-like and Shyamalan (aka Hollywood cheesy), but I trust her writing so who knows.

If this releases alongside the Tomb Raider reboot people will be sure to make comparisons, even though they’ll be two completely different games.

    • But that artwork made it seem like in some jungle place, though I guess deceit is the only place to go from being among thieves. lol. I wonder how they will fit in Chloe returning (wait wasnt Sully interested in her) and Harry Flynn (he needs to return!)!!!!

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Ah good observation about the jungle. Maybe not related after all…
I do hope Chloe returns… Because of her design, accent, and attitude (also, thief=raider), she gave me a Lara Croft vibe so I pretended Lara and Drake were on an adventure together. XD

Sully is pretty much my favorite character, but wasn’t Flynn…
…blown up into a million pieces?

        • Im hoping that through some miracle he survived, lol! I love using his avy online though (well Eddy Raja too, I hope DLC transfers over, I spent so much on all those skins and maps!)

    • I’m pretty excited about Tomb Raider myself. I stopped after Tomb Raider 5, and made an exception for Anniversary. After that, I checked out Guardian of Light, which I really, really liked. (If anyone’s up for GoL PC multiplayer, I’m in!)

It’s kind of nice that they’re rebooting Tomb Raider again. They first time they rebooted it, things didn’t quite work out (Angel of Darkness), but since Crystal Dynamics have been in pretty great form lately, I’m really hoping to see them come through on this.

Plus, I remember the rumours (which have all been more or less spot on so far…) saying that the new game is going to be Metroid-esque in that you’d have an open world within limits with backtracking and whatnot. That worked super well for Batman: Arkham Asylum, so I could totally see it working in Tomb Raider. :)

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Yup yup. An open world exploration adventure that isn’t set in a city (but rather a jungle island!) is something of a rarity. And it looks like it might have horror elements? God just thinking about what it could be (Tomb Raider gameplay with Uncharted’s style meets the freedom of Arkham Asylum and the creepiness of Siren) makes me froth at the mouth. Indeed, I completely trust in Crystal Dynamics to deliver a good ol’ time.

      • Many fans consider Angel of Darkness the best one for some reason even though it was near broken. I think it was because of the story.

        • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Really? I haven’t played that one, (partially because) I heard it was one of the worst in series, if not the worst.

        • I think the problem with Angel of Darkness might be the era it was developed in. If I go back to the older Tomb Raiders, my mind sort of tunes itself back to the days of bad cameras, blind jumps, tank-like movement etc., and I can compensate for those issues without giving it much thought.

AoD came way after a lot of those issues had been largely addressed in a lot of games, though, so I guess people find it harder to excuse because of that.

Was the story really that great? I never played long enough to find out, but I do recall wondering what happened to Lara after TR4. 5 hinted that she was still alive, but I don’t remember if they really explained how…

  • PrinceHeir

wow looks like Uncharted 3 and the new Tomb Raider are gonna be awesome :D

  • malek86

I wish I could be a bit more interested, but honestly, I didn’t think Uncharted was that good. Mostly one shoot-out after another, only broken by some platforming which felt very loose (is Nathan a lizard or what?). Story was ok, but nothing too gripping. I eventually lost interest halfway through.

Still, it will be fun to see what kind of technical checkpoint they can reach this time. UC2 was a sight to behold, and I expect UC3 to have the same effect.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

I wasn’t too impressed by Uncharted 1 either, all shooting, no sense of exploration. But I think 2 had a good ebb and flow between shootouts and platform/puzzle/sightseeing (until the end, anyway).

      • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Sightseeing was probably the best part of it all.

        And I loved U2.

      • malek86

Would you say that UC2 was better than UC1 in its pacing? If so, I might give it a chance. But I’ll probably wait until I can find it for 15€ or less.

        • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Oh yea, by a long shot. I absolutely *despised* the waves of enemies that came at me in droves while I was stuck behind limited cover in the first game. It took too long and there was no variety. 85% shootouts, 15% everything else.

Uncharted 2 still has shootouts, but the enemies aren’t endless, and short fights are interspersed between quite a bit of platform/puzzle/sightseeing (extremely well designed too). I’d d say it’d be about 50% shootouts and 50% everything else, with the last quarter of the game more fight heavy. And even the fights themselves have improved. More of them are spread out over diverse terrain/ situations that keep moving you around creatively and continue your sightseeing.

          • malek86

Cool. Do I need to have played the first game to understand the story?

          • No you dont the story is pretty much self contained as nothing really came from the first story into the second.

          • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

What TS said. Nah you don’t need the first game. The only thing that carries over is Elena and drake’s relationship, and that’s not even central. Plenty of movies have situations where 2 characters had a relationship before the story started.

Oh and do yourself a favor when solving the puzzles: don’t look at his notebook/ journal. I got through the game without needing it once, iirc.

        • UC2 was must better with pacing, no longer were we confined to waiting for the pattern of enemies deluge attacks to stop!

      • I thought part one was only okay, really. Part two, though. I finished in two days and it was a 13 hour playthrough. I pretty much couldn’t stop for those two days, I loved it that much.

  • cmurph666

I’m hoping that lost city is Atlantis.

  • karasuKumo

I don’t actually think I found anything unpleasant with Uncharted 2 so I’m super hyped for this one :D. Bring it on!

  • [The Hunter] Doomrider

    That’s a lot of deception.

I suppose I could start getting excited for this, but I’m too busy hyping myself up for Arkham City!

Also, they changed his face. AGAIN. What’s wrong with that? 2’s was just fine!

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

A man’s gotta have more rugged stubble to catch the rugged sand so he can be more rugged than the desert itself. Also, every single iconic American action hero’s face combined into one.

      • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Man, I was gonna start listing American heroes, but I can only remember GI Joe and Steven Seagal. Does Chuck Norris count?

  • I’m not really excited considering I haven’t played the first two (besides the demo’s) and I own a PS3.

  • Phoenix_Apollo

I dunno about you guys, but I came across a LOT of glitches in Uncharted 2. More than in the original even, most of them involving me getting stuck in the geometry and having to kill myself to get out of it. I sincerely hope they can improve this in UC3, as well as the controls, which do still need a little work. For me at least, he still gets caught in his animations sometimes.

Don’t get me wrong, I totally love Uncharted 1 and 2, but they need a little more polish.

    • That never happened to me, but I did notice a little more clipping than I would’ve liked.

      • Phoenix_Apollo

Yeah, it must have happened at least three times between the chapter Drake and Elena have their first mission to the helicopter battle.
