More Pretty El Shaddai: Ascension Of The Metatron Screens To Gawk At

By Spencer . December 10, 2010 . 12:02pm

That’s Enoch above, the robot battling hero of El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron. Robots… in a game with archangels? Yes, says the ESRB in their description.

This is an action-adventure game in which players control Enoch, a man who must prevent fallen angels from destroying humankind. Players punch, kick, and use a magical sword to defeat a variety of fantastical creatures (e.g., robots, armored animals) and human-like enemies. Some sequences allow players to engage in melee-style attacks: battles are highlighted by grunts, cries of pain, and clanging sound effects—defeated enemies disappear in brief puffs of smoke or bursts of light. In one sequence, two boar-like creatures are depicted in masks that emit red streaming liquid from their eyes. The dialogue sometimes contains suggestive material (e.g., "[Y]ou defiled your bodies and bore the Nephilim through the blood of the flesh" and "I granted wives to satisfy their lust and that they might bear children.").

I wonder if they meant Ezek V one of the enemies Ezekiel, a fallen angel driven by motherly love, created.

The boar-like creatures with bloody eyes are Foola & Woola two familiars Ezekiel cared for.

    Can’t wait to play it.

Btw, can anyone explain WHY El Shaddai is so freakin’ populair?!
    It’s already a Meme.

    Check this,
    There’s more.

All i know is, The scene with the armor and
Enoch’s “No problem, Everything is fine” line may be the cause.

    • [The Hunter] Doomrider

      That was…. stupid xD

But popularity is good! It means it will sell, at least in Japan.

    • goronyan

nico douga and 2ch users/crafters deserves all the merit for increasing el shaddai’s fame
Yet the e3 trailer was so well made that’s possible to make almost anything from it.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

It’s his face I’m telling you. His face.

  • [The Hunter] Doomrider

This has got to be one of the most beautiful and stylish games to come out in recent memory. It’s impressive. It’s like looking at beautiful paintings in motion. And playing them.

    This is gonna be great.

    • Neckbear

Indeed, this just proves that art direction can make a game’s graphics beautiful, even when they aren’t technically impressive.

The only thing that bothers me, though, why are the shadows round like they were from a PS1 game? It’s the only flaw I see in the graphics.

      • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Yeah, art direction is more important than the technical part, and this is the perfect example.

        I hadn’t noticed that… Maybe it’s a trade-off of some sort to assure a good framerate?

        • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Given the overall geometric style, it doesn’t bother me much.

          • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Yeah, it can be easily overlooked.

So much diversity in those screens. Just imagine how gorgeous the final product will be. And it seems to play with perspective, just like Nier. Nice touch.

Still not sold on the jeans, though.

          • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

            I love experimental visuals/presentation.

The jeans *are* a bit odd.

  • thebanditking

I hope this one turns out as good as it looks, especially from a multiplat stand point…

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

No kidding. I’m tired of the PS3 getting the short end of the stick when it comes to multiplat.

  • Wow it seems they addressed my only concern about the backgrounds and empty landscapes. Quite a few of the images look interesting. I think I will keep this game on my “will buy if it is hyped and garnishes a >80% review score on major review score aggregate sites.”

      Reviews are stupid.

      • If Im spending $1500-$2000 on this form of entertainment each year, then I need some measure to ensure that games beyond what I think are must buys, have some measure of quality.

Reviews would have enabled me to avoid being disappointed with Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II (which because of silly means they didnt let reviews come out until midnight, after I had already received and opened the product). I do not want to be disappointed with a game ever again.

        • OVERUSED

No one is forcing you to spend $1500-$2000 dollars on a bunch of toys.

          • To some people, myself included, they’re more than just toys. They’re therapy.

        • You know what you should rely on? Find people who share similar tastes as you and then listen to them. Don’t listen to “professional” reviewers, half of which are giving good reviews because of advertising revenue. If I listened to reviewers, I would’ve never played God Hand or Nier.

          • I wouldn’t be that pessimistic.Yes, some reviews are skewed but player reviews (which only seem to exist on the levels of “It’s the second coming of Jesus”,”Meh”, or “Halo is better”) aren’t much to go on either.I always look at multiple professional reviews to get a much broader scope of my potential purchases and that hasn’t failed yet.PS God Hand and Nier deserved what they got, they both were inventive but marred by issues that held them back.

          • It takes great work for me to go through on Gamespot for reviews that are more detailed than that or have every game imaginable at a 10/10 on their reviews. Fortunately Amazon reviewers are a bit more realistic. But difficult to rely on for quick reviews immediately after release of a game :(

        • SolidusSnake

you could always try, like, thinking for yourself, dood?

That is the result of me just thinking for myself. My Wii library is just so focused, and even I know that Im possibly missing some stellar games. Its just without any suggestions I only stay on my comfort zone and dont try nothing else :(

          • Wow,you have the gaming taste of a twelve year old.Do yourself a favor and pick up No More Heroes 2 already.

  • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

I wish more devs took advantage of current HD hardware capabilities to push art on a grand scale like this. There’s so much contrast going on here but somehow it all works… Klimt-like texture but Bauhaus-like austerity, minimal but meticulous, medieval yet modern… simply brilliant.

That funny looking white thing with a human riding on it looks like Cactuar.

  • Kris

Stunning. It almost makes me forget Ignition’s spotty past. I can’t wait to try it out.

  • So simple…

    So colorful…

    So beautiful…

  • HarryHodd

Art style is nice. This game has creeped onto my wishlist. Hope the gameplay is good.

  • Looks very pretty and sounds pretencious in a good way. But I guess I’m the minority that’s not excited about the game due to a combination of this being an experimental game and lack of gameplay videos.
