Tales Of Xillia Has Double The Protagonists

By Spencer . December 15, 2010 . 1:05am

image Namco Bandai formally unveiled the next title in the Tales series. The trademarks we found were right on the money, the game is Tales of Xillia.

A scan from Jump reveals the game has two heroes designed by two different artists. Kosuke Fujishima (Tales of Symphonia / Abyss) designed the male lead, Jute Mathis. He’s a student studying medicine in the royal capital to become a physician. Jute is fighting to save a friend. Mira Maxwell, the female lead, was created by Mutsumi Inomata (Destiny / Graces). She calls herself "chief of the deceased spirits" and is a master of the four primary elements (fire, earth, water, and wind). Without hesitation she will carry out her mission. The magazine doesn’t state what that is.

While Tales of Xillia has a more serious look, Namco Bandai did not drop the series’ signature anime style.

Tales of Xillia is slated for 2011 and it’s the first game in the series to be on PlayStation 3 first.

A tip of the hat and stone fist handshake to B.K. for sending us the scan. Thanks!

  • Kris

Well, I’m hyped! Fujishima and Inomata working together for character designs is something I never expected, but am quite pleased with. I’m loving the looks of the environments, too!

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

I guess it’d make sense for the artistic representatives of Symphonia and Destiny to collaborate because this is the anniversary.

  • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

    HOLY ****!

Second impressions: Seems like the concept art transitioned well but the characters’ look is NOT what I expected when they said they’re going for something different… Not exactly technically impressive for a PS3 game, but I have a feeling this game is far from finished…

Does this anime style means the chances of localization has been reduced? Who knows. It’s 3D, it’s not a port, it’s team Symphonia… but it’s Namco.

    • malek86

Is anybody expecting awesomely impressive visuals from a game that will probably have a lower budget than most Wii titles?

I think the whole “if it were exclusive for PS3 it would look so much better” only applies to mega-sized production.

      • Extra_Life

I’m looking forward to the stylishly impressive environments. I’m much more interested in that ‘kind’ of impressive than technically impressive.

        • malek86

Oh, definitely. I’m just saying that this won’t push the PS3 to the limits, and there wasn’t much reason to expect it to, either.

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

I don’t think this has a lower budget than most Wii titles.

It’s the 15th Anniversary Tales game, I think all the teams are involved somehow, both trademark artists designed the main characters (as Kris noted), the art direction is unusually fancy, Aymi Hamasaki is doing the theme song, and Motoi Sakuraba composing the in game music. Those are not signs of a low budget game.

What I do think, is that as with many Japanese developers this gen, the Tales Studio doesn’t have a good handle on the PS3 hardware.

        • malek86

Maybe, but following the series’ sales pattern, it looks like this won’t sell more than 500k (at the very best). And they probably won’t release it outside Japan either, so no western sales to help. For that amount of revenue, you can’t have a FF13-sized budget.

          • DUDE!!!! Negative and statements emanating with hopelessness will lead to negative and hopeless results from Namco Bandai! We must stay hopeful and optimistic about its release outside of Nihon!

Plus didnt NB realize that need to address the global market instead of keeping their best kept stuff in JPN (or in the hands of western studios).

          • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

You’re right about sales. I don’t even think it’ll do 500K. Tales of Graces F did about 200K off the start, will trickle to near 300K levels. I can see this starting off at about 250K-300K, maybe reach 400K.

I don’t get the whole “it doesn’t sell in the west” thing though. If anything, its proven to sell about as well in the west as it does in Japan.

          • malek86

Maybe it could… but since it probably won’t be released here, it’s kind of a moot point.

If it does get released though, people better buy it, or they’ll be losing their only chance of proving that Tales games can sell in the west :P

    • AdamBoy64

Yes, that is also one thing I noticed in the trailer. The environment’s look a fair bit more detailed than the characters…

      • I thought the Tales universe always fell into that though..

        • puchinri

Yeah, it does. I never actually noticed, but I have to agree. I suppose it’s just really obvious now compared to usual (though it did stand out a lot to me in Legendia in places).

    • Not impressive? The environments shown looked great, especially the city and it seemed to take much advantage of the powerful PS3 hardware well more so than Graces F.

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Art direction is one thing (and it is fantastic), but I don’t see any apparent lighting solutions, the polygon count on the characters are barely a step higher than Graces F, and the textures better be placeholders because man, they are of low quality.

I will state again, that because of strong art direction from unusual designs and a warm, painterly color palette–the most inspired I’ve seen for a console JRPG in a while, actually makes me want to be in that world–its technical shortcomings don’t stand out so much.

        • The thing is though, a good art direction will ALWAYS trump high technical fidelity, and it will age much better as well. I mean look at Wind Waker

          • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Isn’t that what I said? That the strong art direction compensates for the technical shortcomings?

And while art direction is ultimately the determining factor for how good your game looks, technical fidelity is a kind of art in itself, and the level of artistic vision that could be achieved is often dependent on technicalities. Could things like Okami, Shadow of Colossus, and FFX have been done on the PSX? Sure. But would they have looked as stunning as they did on the PS2?

EDIT: If anything, technical fidelity *advances* art direction. Good art direction might not push the hardware to its max, but it could certainly take heavy advantage of it. Wind Waker is timeless because of its art direction. But don’t forget something like that–as it currently stands–wouldn’t have been possible on the N64. Or take a step back. Yoshi’s Island wouldn’t be what it is on the NES. Nothing can save a style-blind game packed with all sorts of fancy mapping, filtering, and tessellation, but what if a sensibly stylish game was filled with those? I say this because many Japanese devs need to stop falling back on that crutch of an excuse, “Oh our games art made with great art, we don’t need to explore fancy tech.” For chrissake good art direction and good tech are not at odds with each other; if anything they are inseparable. Choosing one over another is a mindset that keeps games from improving from a technical and innovative standpoint.

Sorry about the rant, but that’s something I feel strongly about.

  • Obligatory “It’s not coming Stateside” post.

    • Multiple years from its last appearance in the states and this as an original title…I think it is coming over.

  • Beautiful but as you know we are not getting it. I will hope but only a sliver.

  • nyoron

Ooh, I like the character designs and the environments look great. Just based on the trailer I like the more heavily cel shaded look of the characters in Vesperia better, but this is still nice. I was concerned when I heard that the art direction might be changed to appeal more to the West but I guess there was nothing to worry about.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

But changing the art direction, if only a little to appeal to the West, means a chance at localization. I was hoping for a Star Ocean 3 –> Last Hope kind of graphical leap from Graces to this, but alas, no dice.

      • nyoron

Honestly one of the biggest reasons I enjoy Tales games is the heavy anime look. If they had changed the style so that the characters looked like, say, Tales of Hearts CG version, I’m not sure I would even want it. I’d much rather keep things the way I like it and struggle through the import version, or perhaps wait for a fan translation. Maybe that’s irrational but whatever. Since I do like the look of Xillia it’s a moot point anyway.

  • Mira’s hair is UGLY from the front but from the back it looks great and the guy looks interesting and a LOT better than Asbel and the gameplay looks like TALES OF FREAKING HEARTS. *PERMADEAD*

I loved that game and it looks like they brought in the linking of attacks from other characters from Hearts. If this game doesn’t get localized I will be in rage and blow up their HQ.

Do it for once Namco. It’s already on a Sony console. >_>

    • haisihwait

Who knows, Maybe namco will release all three tales of games in english on the ps3 causing minds to be blown and brix to be shat.

      • I had a dream that happened and woke up with tears in my eyes because I knew it would never happen. :(

      • superdry

A Tales of triple pack? Minds will be exploded if that happens. Okay…if Bamco brings this over in the states, I’ll be happy and they should because the PS3 needs a tales game (Wii and 360 already have one).

Trailer looks nice, awesome we have a hand-to-hand combat chaaracter and Mira looks like the anti-Marta.

        • AdamBoy64

Hehe.. yes.. I thought that about Mira as well. It’s like Marta in her ‘wild years’.

      • Barrit

Haha, that is quite the wishful thinking, but I like it! I’m not sure how true this is, but I heard since Team Symphonia is making the game, it is more likely for Xillia to be localized? Even if it adds a fraction of probability, I’ll take it!

    • One shouldnt make promises they will be unable to keep ^_^

    • Barrit

Aww.. don’t hate on her bedhead. Maybe she just woke up? Heroes don’t always have time to brush their hair you know! haha

      • It’s not the style I dislike. It’s the weird colors and the way her bang is yellow like pee. (lol) It’s very distracting. I dunno. lol I can get you used to it.

    • She looks cool, she is like a sci-fi girl xD

  • PurpleDoom

This is looking mighty awesome. I like how they still have the anime-style characters but have the somewhat more realistic environments.

  • Guest

They coulda tried a new Anime art style. Perhaps use a different artist. Maybe the guy who draws for 999 & Capcom vs SNK.

Also they need to put more work into the hair. Haruhi PS3 game sports the best looking Anime cel shade engine so far imo

  • Hey Namco. Prove me wrong that this isn’t coming stateside.

    I dare ya.

  • Damn that looks pretty awesome and the male lead is not only cute, but kind of badass. Hell, I might have to import this game.

I am glad they are using the anime style in a series game. Perhaps this will show that anime stylized characters won’t detract from a series environment.

  • Dimentionalist

Looks somewhat intriguing… but I’m not a big fan of the art style. Usually, when I see a Tales game, I’m hyped, but this one just isn’t doing it for me. I’m worried that, if they decide to localize a Tales, they’ll leave Graces F in Japan and bring this one over to North America instead because “lol anime is teh suxx0rs”.

    • Exkaiser

But this one is still anime. In fact, Inomata’s art for Graces is much like her art here.

      • Dimentionalist

True, but Graces’ gameplay looks a lot more interesting, plus it has a great story from what I’ve read. Wish Namco wasn’t so stingy about Team Destiny games, I greatly prefer them to Team Symphonia’s stuff (looks like the staff, while a mix, is mostly Team Symphonia).

        • Exkaiser

I think it is really far too early to be judging Xillia’s combat.

          • Draparde

            Or story o.o?

          • Or anything at all? 0.0

        • Barrit

Did you try out the demo on the Japan PSN for Graces? I don’t understand Japanese, so I’m sure I wasn’t using the battle system to it’s full capability, but I was able to pull of some pretty cool moves devastating everything on screen.

  • Guest

Way to put the power of the PS3 to work.

  • holyPaladin

Wow male protagonist using fist as weapon

    Like Legendia

    • Now Senel isn’t the only badass protagonist…

    • And the female protagonist is not your typical priest/mage. I think she is the first using sword? at least in a main Tales of.

We need this game in english.

  • I’m disappointed that Namco didn’t reveal if the ‘X’ in Xillia is silent or not. I just know this is going to cause me disapointment when I go to conventions, mention it in the wrong way and have otaku’s fan fanboy/girls of Tales game stare at me like I’ve just killed and screwed their fave anime character (they couldn’t care less about their mothers) and shun me for life, no matter what good I do.

    • Exkaiser

      They did reveal it.

      It’s Ex-illia.

    • Yeah, it’s EX

    • Aoshi00

But sometimes when there’s a sound in Jpn it’s silent in Eng, like Gnosis in Xenosaga, in Jpn they say the “Gu” sound. Here it’s Ex.. like Prof Xavier I guess.

The look is quite good, but I prefer Vesperia and Graces F more.

      • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Aoshi, I need your help up there with what is said on the trailer =P I tried to translate what I understood, but I’m sure it’s full of mistakes. Can you help out please? Sorry!

      • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Ignore my previous comment, someone already translated the video =P Thanks anyway!

        • Aoshi00

Oh okay.. I just finished dinner and was about to have a go at it lol.. I’m not that great at translation because I never do it. Your translation was pretty good, I was only going to add a thing or two.. like people look to the sky to achieve their dreams old man blah blah blah.. the seree and humans have a symbiotic relationship and coexist in the world and there should be no evil except from the human side.. and the guy wielding the powers of seree wanting to protect both races.. I like the seiyuu, seems like the girl is voiced by Catherine :).

I usually don’t listen to initial trailers that closely, other than that of FFXIII before its release, I watched that like over 10 times (it was too hyped and I was ultimately let down..), was wondering what the heck “focus/mission” was, and who the heck was Serah at that time :)

          • [The Hunter] Doomrider

            Thanks again =)

Oh, I didn’t notice that Catherine bit, nice! I know how bad hype is, I’ve ruined a few games for myself because of it… Trying to make out the whole focus/L’cie/Fal Cie thing just from the trailers was probably an impossible task =P

Hey, at least Serah is pretty cute <3

  • neocatzon

It’s on PS3, at least lets hope it’s not another tales of beta

    • they’ll probably re-release it on the same console for extra sales. xD

      • no they will re-release it on the wii with less content. :P

  • HarryHodd

I’m going to play this one way or another. Looks amazing.

  • Come on, come on, come one Namco Bandai, COME ON!!

Finally Senel is not the only MC with fist xD, love the designs, looks a lot like tales of graces though, can’t say is my favorite style, i still prefer tales of the abyss style, still not bad… I seriously hope namco bandai will bring this…. darn it T_T it will be too expensive to import it

  • Hmmm…Looks interesting..I like the more serious feel…characters doesn’t look too short like in previous games…but i must see more to make a decision….

  • Wow, it looks pretty good and the ‘gameplay’ clip made me squee~ I won’t bother saying I hope they release it in the west because either way, import or no import, I shall play this <3

    Ufotable? Hell yes.

    • I couldnt put my finger on where I heard of them before

      • maybe if you used google you can.

      • It’s a Japanese animation studio

        • neogeno

Dont forget God Eater. I think they are animating for them too.

  • AdamBoy64

Well, now we play the waiting game..
The next 6 months will be crucial – hopefully we might hear something about localisation…

After that, my hopes will plummet..
    *sets alarm for 6 months*

  • so… two protoganist on one title eh? this is gonna be the first tales series if you choose these two main characters, Jute Mathias or Mira Maxwell

  • NipponjiRurouniJSRF

This game looks amazing I really like the combat so far, and I noticed that Jute used an arte that looked pretty similar to Ghost Wolf. It’s also nice to see a protagonist that doesn’t use swords in a JRPG. I’ve given hopes on a localized version of Vesperia PS3, but I still have high hopes for Graces F seeing as how we never got to enjoy the original Graces, and I really enjoyed the PS3 when I played it. I pray we get this game stateside. I know we dint get improved rereleased versions of games out her as seen with the Kingdom Hearts Final Mix series, but seeing as how this is a new entry I think we have better chances getting Xillia than Vesperia PS3

  • I think it seemed pretty compelling and nice. I like the direction it is going.

I hope like Tales of Graces F it gets bombarded with unique costumes and crossover costumes.

Its time to start bombarding Namco Bandai with postcards exclaiming desires to bring a new and original title in the Tales series out over here in America.

    • Not sure if I agree with your comment about the bombarding of unique & crossover costumes.. I’d love~ to see them release DLC costumes (especially since I love changing costumes in Tales games) but the US branch probably wouldn’t really release all of the DLC costumes.

Like for instance, if they did release Graces F in English, we won’t be getting costumes of franchises that isn’t actually released in English. Yes.. I’m looking at you, Hatsune Miku and the [email protected] outfits. Probably even the Toro cat too, since that’s a Japan’s Sony mascot. Code Geass is borderline possible, since Bandai released it in English and it’s still pretty big in the anime scene. And because of that decision, fans might be a little outraged, especially if they enjoyed said characters/outfits from playing imports of the original titles or follow videos on YouTube.

  • Beautiful environments.

    …That girl’s hair is ludicrous.

  • Must…Not…Get…Excited…

    • Fonic

That’s my mindset for this series.
Game looks nice though. I was kind of hoping they might try some new things to draw in new fans but it looks pretty similar to previous titles. Liking the male protagonist’s fighting style; a teleporting fist fighter would be fun to play as.

    • vadde939

Probably best not to get excited for a game that will never be localized.

  • ChaosPaladinFayt

OMG for once, they are pro from the start!!!!! ^^d. Looks very nice =O. That guy has a pretty interesting character design and personality. It’s like a “Im brimming with confidence, so dun mess with me or i will mess u up real bad”. Pretty cool….wish i had a ps3 now =(

  • [The Hunter] Doomrider

So, nothing seems to have really changed. Well, “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it” I suppose.

Oh, Maxwell has a katana. I know who I’ll be using whenever I get this. As for the new animation studio, I love ufotable but Production IG are superior when it comes to animation, I believe…

Also, the game looks more like Graces F than Vesperia. So, they use the engine like they were uplifting a Wii game instead of developing an HD game from the ground up, pick a less expensive animation studio (I think?) and… What, drop the money on the OP by Ayumi Hamasaki?

I’m not sure what to think just yet.

  • goronyan

If a more serious look means adding some dramatic or tragic scenes or/and even blood then i’ll make this game my top priority.
and knowing namco, this title may be more expensive than Graces F and this time it probably may be possible to buy a 360 with the price of dlc’s lol

  • The big questions are: Will Namco Bandai release a “pure” version of this to X0 or Wii.
Will this title see a localization so that people outside of Japan can play it?

As bonus: How will the new law that just passed in Japan hinder Namco Bandai to create the type of characters that they want?

  • Jirin

Which core team is developing it? Symphonia or Destiny, I have to import it. Anyone else, I don’t.

    • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

Both. Plus everyone else. But mainly Team Symphonia.

  • Yui

I don’t know how well this will go over with the SiliconEra commenting community, but I’d like to ask if anyone is capable of translating that trailer? Would be nice to understand what’s being said. =D

    • [The Hunter] Doomrider

      Hey, let me try!

Seree (maybe these are the deceased spirits of which Maxwell is chief?) has/have died.
Like I thought, it’s probably the power of Earth (?).
I need to check it out/confirm it.

People have hopes/wishes on their hearts (chests?) (not sure, I can’t make out what he says in the end).
Then something about the sky (damn old man, I don’t understand).

In this Liese Maxie (the game world) there are human and seree (?) classes.
People wish for things to become real based on/according to seree…?

Seree’s life/lives can protect people’s wishes, then something about Maxwell being the chief of the spirits (I suppose) and being the one that protects all existence.

Then… not allowing the existence of evil?

Yeah, full of mistakes and not much help, sorry xD

Someone else will do a clean and correct translation, I’m sure.

      • Yusaku_Matsuda70s

        A for Affort. :)

      • Yui

Buddy, not only was that a good enough translation for me, but you did me a great honour simply by trying. Thanks. =D

  • I’d say the graphics are pretty nice. However, the characters’ faces feel a little flat, especially the eyes. They make me think of in-game psp models. Other than that, I have no gripes about the look of the game and the battle system is looking really nice, too. I’m liking this whole serious tone as well.

  • Darkrise

Glad to see that they didn’t change the anime art style, and that the characters actually look serious in this. *prays for blood in the game but seeing as how they only added blood in anime cutscenes, highly doubtful*
I’m guessing we’re also not getting this?

  • karasuKumo

Her hair looks like it has a Leek coming out of it … I like it :)

  • Slow, uninspired Artes and combat….Team Symphonia this time, I’m guessing?

The visuals and character designs look GREAT though. Looking forward to hearing more about this, and maybe getting a better impression of the combat later on. Also I really wish they would find somebody, ANYBODY, to use instead of Motoi Sakuraba. Maybe Go Shiina again?

  • Hm.. not really sure what to actually say, since I don’t wanna just fangirl over it. XD I’m happy that they finally announced it tho, but wanna wait for more characters, story info, more info on the gameplay, and etc.

Tho.. if there’s two protagonists, can I be hopeful and wish for a Star Ocean: The Second Story/Second Departure experience? XD I KNOW it won’t happen, but still.. two main characters, same story but different perspectives, and exclusive characters for whichever protagonist you choose to play.. lol, that’s why I adore The Second Story more than any other Star Ocean made.

  • duyxbox

Well , I think after the fail of Clash of the titans ,Enslaved , they finally move back to domestic studio , so I think they won’t waste much money on new fail IP and concentrate on their main series . Maybe there is a good chance for us to get E version of Tales Of series ( if they still want to make money from west ;d )

  • Sekundes

    Aw man… Another Tales game that I want… That I won’t get =(

  • puchinri

That hair…. Well. It didn’t look as bad in action. But both characters just look cool in battle, anyway. Loving the environments. I think environment alone so far makes me want to play. Since it’s the anniversary, I wonder if Bamco will at least let this get localized, if they don’t do it themselves.

  • Finalstar2007

Please tell me its coming in english

    • vadde939

Not likely. This is Namco we’re talking about after all.

  • thebanditking

Looks great to me, hopefully the more serious tone and the fact that it’s not a port will lead to a localized version somewhere. Personally I don’t care if EU picks it up and I have to import, as long as english speaking Tales fans can get the game and you know understand it.

  • raymk

Best news i’ve heard today and the graphics are very good. I just want to know the release date and what the other characters look like.

  • Fonic

But if it’s for PS3 first and not coming outside Japan, how will they justify an upgraded port a year later!?
    (Just kidding…mostly.)

  • MasterXHunter

Too bad Team Symphonia is doing this game, otherwise it would have been worth buying.

  • MrRobbyM

Awesome character design and art direction.

  • Abyssal Chronicles has translated the video~: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsx1E950fwI

  • it looks really interesting, and the tone seems to be unique for a tales game.
    im…cautiously interested.

i dont want my heart broken again bamco :'(

  • Vino (Tim N)

    <3 <3 <3

  • I really hope this comes out in the US and Europe. I’m gonna get a PS3 soon and i would love to play this on it.
But seeing as most of the other games in the tales series werent released outside japan, i highly doubt that it’ll be coming over anytime soon, if at all.
