God Eater Burst Has A New Name In North America

By Ishaan . January 12, 2011 . 3:28pm

God Eater Burst has a new name in North America. And that name is… Gods Eater Burst. No, we don’t know why, but we do plan to ask when we talk to D3 Publisher about the game.

Gods Eater Burst will release on the PSP this Spring. If you pre-order the game at Gamestop, you’ll get access to the “End of Beauty” December DLC from Japan, featuring the Aragami Venus, and another mission with an Aragami named Caligula (below).

We’re hoping that the two don’t remain Gamestop exclusives and are eventually released as regular downloadable content over the PlayStation Network sometime down the line.

  • stupidest name change ever

it sounds worse as gods eater burst

  • MarkMario

    … Really,
    Gods Eater Burst
    The fail ._.

  • Hahaha! Is this to prevent people from thinking that they can eat the Christian God in this game? Anyway, time to pre-order.

    • SolidusSnake

That would be kinda awesome if you could; on the other hand YHVH is likely to give you indigestion what with the burning faces and all.

    • Natabuu

When I was being raised Catholic, I ate the Christian God every Sunday morning.

      • I can relate. I was raised in an Amish family. We had Christian God à la mode all the time.

  • Gods are plural so it should sound better right?

  • God = typically is assumed to refer to the God of Christian faith

Gods can refer to more generic deities, even mythical beasts.

It’s most likely avoiding soccer mom issues.

    • Probably you’re right, still stupid name change is stupid, lol.

    • vadde939

Whiny religious soccer moms. So annoying.

      • Guest

        yes but mmm milfs

    • So instead of insulting Christianity and every other monotheistic religion, we’ll insult all the polytheistic ones!

If that’s the reason, that’s just idiotic.

      • The ratio of complaints from the former will completely overshadow that of the latter.

      • GVmanX

The title isn’t even insulting in the first place.

  • JustAnotherTraveler

While it isn’t a big deal in the least, it is a rather nonsensical name change..literally. By that, I mean it sounds stupid. I imagine the reason for this change is that the plural gods does not hold an offensive undertone for Christians. However, if this is really what they wanted to avoid, then they should have changed the name of the title to “Eater of Gods.” Not only does this actually make sense (seriously Gods Eater Burst is one of the worst game titles I’ve ever heard), but it at least sounds somewhat cool. When you add Burst though, it sounds lame no matter what. Bursting Eater of Gods! Eater of Bursting Gods! Burst Eater of Gods. etc…

    • androvsky

“Gods Eater: Bursting with fruit flavor!”

      Sorry, couldn’t resist.

  • It’s me or the Caligula looks like a Narga rip-off?

  • Caligula

I approve of this Caligula inclusion.

  • goronyan

can’t prove but i’m sure this name change had something related to religion… omge

  • Hraesvelgr

    Gamestop only? Come on, man…

  • SolidusSnake

“Gods Eater” isn’t any less likely to offend whiny jesus lovers. Considering how awful it sounds, I’m guessing Bamco is trying to appeal to our love of goofy engrish.

    That, or they’re just stupid.

    • Well this is conservative America, Im still baffled that Square Enix is releasing those tarot cards for Tactics Ogre.

      • SolidusSnake

You must really live in the sticks. Even in Texas, where I live, only the most extreme religous fanatics would be upset over tarot cards. Certainly not any gamers I know.

        • Hank Hill seemed somewhat upset over tarot cards.

          • SolidusSnake

True but Hank Hill was no gamer, unless you count Madden.

btw what part of Texas are you in?

          • Madden never counts.

I’m in the Austin area. Like… 30 miles east of the city, but still the area.

          • Natabuu

Have you forgotten his brief obsession with a GTA-clone starring himself?

          • SolidusSnake

@STuger: Austin’s a pretty cool town, I’m in San Antonio myself

@Natabuu: It would be hard to forget something that outrageously cool, so I must have missed that episode.

      • Probably because we’re, you know, NOT Conservative? -.-

        • GVmanX

Like being Conservative instantly makes you insane?

          • Ren

Depends on the type of conservative.

Are you conservative because some of your values aren’t what’s supposed to be the standard today and rescue some of the better old values or are you a conservative on the sense of ‘Let’s burn these pagans, sodomites and revolutionaries on the stake!’ kind?

          • GVmanX

I know that. It’s just that Mr. Shaver’s post seemed to imply that Conservatives are all people akin to the kind you’d find in the Westboro Baptist Church.

      • Caligula

If America was horribly offended by tarot cards, then P3 probably wouldn’t have done well. I don’t think anybody actually cares except for a few wackjobs.

      • Ren

For a country who speaks of such ‘freedom’ you guys suck. So what about your conservative America trying to shield you from everything, if there aren’t people to push the boundaries, they will stay the same. There are other religions besides christianism. There are gay and bi and trans and inter and omni and hemaphrodite people and they are no different from any other. Don’t think because you live in a place filled with ‘conservative’ people, the whole country is the same. Their products aren’t for ‘conservative america, but for all USA and maybe even Canada.

After all, you can shield your eyes from reality, but reality will never shield its eyes from you.

    • Scrooge_McDuck

The “Eater” part is the awful and engrishy one in the first place. Adding an “s” to “God” doesn’t really make that much a difference?

      • Exkaiser

I don’t really see what’s Engrishy about “God Eater.”

        • Code

Me either, doesn’t seem engrishy to me. But adding an ‘S’ to God, I think makes it far worse and much more awkward for pronouncing, something like a title with one too many syllables to have a nice ring to it.

          • Exkaiser

It just doesn’t really make any sense, honestly. “God Eater” already has the connotation of “something that eats gods” in the plural sense. “Gods Eater” is just gobbledygook.

          • SolidusSnake

Maybe Kojima Productions should rename their upcoming handheld title Metal Gear Solid 3DS: Snakes Eater.

Otherwise I would, like, have no idea that Big Boss could ever eat more than one snake.

  • Hahahahaha! That’s amazing. They made it even more enticingly engrish with a single letter. I am entirely sold on this game now.

  • I didn’t think putting one letter could make a game seem so much dumber, but I was wrong…

  • OrkanyeWest

I bought the Japanese release of GEB back in October, and have enjoyed it significantly. Although I don’t think the game has nearly as much depth compared to the Monster Hunter series, easier solo gameplay (the ability to switch your weapon between melee and projectile in middle of mission, assistance of AI-controlled teammates, higher rates of obtaining rare drops, etc.) accompanied by Persona-ish story should appeal to less hardcore gamers. The free DLC contents have pleased me as well – especially the Railgun collab that offered Misaka Imouto costume set.

This subtle name change, on the other hand, is utterly stupid. I find it even dumber than Neptune getting renamed to ‘Neptunia’.

    • Code

      rar, hiya man >ww<' Awesome!

      • OrkanyeWest

        lol, what’s up.

I just registered a hour ago. My friend linked me to the article.

        • Code

haha, not too much, mostly just picking away at games, borrowed Vanquish from a friend and have been playing a few other games, I need to get back at my Senko though, been missing it opo; Only have had a handful of matches in DUO sadly. But yeah I pretty much kick around here a lot, funny running into ya, guess it really is a small world, lol >w<'

  • MarkMario

Meh Gods Eater isn’t any better since it sounds like God’s Eater which makes no sense… but sounds worst.

    • Zefiro Torna

Sounds more like “God Seater” to me.

    • Add a “y” to God’s Eater and you get God’s Eatery. Feast on divine food.

    • GVmanX

This is exactly what I thought.

  • Draparde

i really gotta wonder why they changed the names to gods eater… :/

  • Code

rar, looking forward to God Eater finally getting release over here >w< Although seriously I refuse to use what is by far a more awkward pronunciation. rar, I call chicken move on D3's part, God Hand never backed down like this opo; Seriously though I kind of hope they aren't going to limit that DLC to just game stop preorders.

  • kroufonz

so they think adding a s will solve alot of thing?

still no word for other dlc that released in december will also come to the west? (misaka tokiwadai dlc)

  • CoolChibi

Redundant name change. But don’t fret! At least the game is actually coming out here. :D

  • PrinceHeir

why the change? oh wait this is america and will probably nit pick any little thing that may “harm” their children. this is just as stupid as that Mass Effect 2 Controversy.

    • I just finishing Mass Effect naught but 2 hours ago…but what is this ME2 controversy?!

  • maxchain

I’m putting my money on “really obscure copyright dealy.”

  • MrSirFeatherFang

Do niche games even get any attention at all? lol
Persona 3 w/ the suicide summoning persona thing, DDS with cannibalism, Grandia II and its *spoilers* religious plot
I mean anything can look offensive to anyone, its subjective. Well I guess the term “video game” will never come off as something anymore than childish, but its not my problem. At least we get the game, right?

    • Yui

You’re right there. Grandia II should have been completely thrown out, considering its plot, but no one seemed to care. Maybe religious zealots and ambitious legal officials simply can’t be bothered playing every niche JRPG to find out whether it’s acceptable or not?

I mean, the ESRB doesn’t seem to care. =D

  • d19xx

    oh gods…

  • There any official release date?

    • Didnt they say March 15?

      • I’ve seen Feb. 28th, March 8th… though the Ides of March would be a cool release date.

  • Shoulda just changed it to Devil Eater Burst instead of the lame sounding name change.

This pretty much to avoid the west kicking up a fuss over this so I understand but it still pains me to see it change to this. And I still feel some of our UK newspapers (The Sun, The Daily Mirror, etc) will still whine about it.

  • GVmanX

I’m gonna laugh when this turns out to be because the name God Eater was already copyrighted.

  • Darkrise

…. Awful name change. Just Awful. If they really wanted to change the name, then maybe change it to Aragami Devourer Burst? Anything BUT “Gods Eater Burst”… Who ever decided to change it to that is one of the most stupidest people of all time. Right next to Namdai’s management.

  • karasuKumo

“Gods Eater” sounds like a series about a mythical sumo who eats all in his path. The “Burst” part is when he eats far too much haha! 0_0

  • xNekux

Why dont I just say Gods of War then

  • Seriously? They can’t be serious. “God Eater” is such a badass and catchy title. “Gods Eater”… is not.

Next, they’re going to take out the j-pop opening and ending.
