Here’s What Else Is New In Rune Factory Oceans

By Ishaan . January 24, 2011 . 11:33am

One of the nicest features of Rune Factory Frontier on the Wii over the series’ Nintendo DS counterparts was being able to make changes to your equipment, and seeing those changes reflected visually on your character in the game.

This feature will be making a return in Rune Factory Oceans. You’ll be able to change equipment on your head, neck, arms and body. In a reply to a fan query on the game’s blog, producer, Yoshifumi Hashimoto, points out that, since Oceans uses character models for conversation scenes instead of anime portraits, you’ll be able to see these changes reflected during those scenes as well.

What’s better, however, is that items that you present to the townsfolk will be reflected in their looks, too. However, Hashimoto says, if you’re wearing silly equipment and feel that it ruins the feel of the event scene, you can press a button to revert back to your default look temporarily.

Similar to Rune Factory 3 on the Nintendo DS, the townsfolk in Oceans are more interactive, too. The ones you get along with will greet you as they pass by, which was one of Rune Factory 3’s more refreshing bullet points.

Finally, Hashimoto mentions in reply to a separate fan that storage space in Rune Factory Oceans has been increased. While we aren’t entirely clear on what he’s referring to, our interpretation of Hashimoto’s quote is that you can now store 99 item types, up from the 60 of previous games, in your storage areas.

Rune Factory Oceans is slated for a February 24th release in Japan on the Wii and PlayStation 3.

Character models instead of character portraits is a good idea imo

    • dunno, maybe if the models are more expressive than the portraits

      • puchinri

They’re definitely very expressive. YMMV though.

  • This just keeps getting better and better, i want the game’s opening pl0x! I just love when games change the character’s outfit as they change the equips, i hope there are a lot of clothes/armors!

  • PrinceHeir

Maid Mode Maid Mode Maid Mode Maid Mode :)

  • Yukito

And the game will get crap reviews for not looking real enough. Mark my words.

    • kroufonz

only if it get released on the west!

wish atlus could start to localize more PS3 JRPG

    • If it even gets reviewed, maybe. I dont know, Im quite sure it will have high user reviews, people seemed excited enough for it…on the PS3.

    • Rune Factory frontier scores a 79% on Metacritic, which is not bad at all.

  • HarryHodd

That sounds great. They seem to really have this dialed in. Here’s hoping the PS3 version makes it over.

  • Do you really get that many items in the game?

    • Of course, you havent played any rune factory uh? You need a lot of space for equips, food and materials

      • M’iau M’iaut

You also need lotsa extra gifts for the Little Woman once she finds out about those “sea ceremonies”.

  • Awesome, this sounds like it will be a fun distraction. Hopefully it gets localized.

    • vadde939

The Wii version will definitely be localized by somebody. The PS3 version is more of a maybe though.

      • Zero_Destiny

Wait, why are you saying the Wii version will definitely be localized? What gives it a better chance than the PS3 version? Because of Frontier being on the Wii? Or is there something else, because I like to think that Sony has enough Harvest Moon fans to get the PS3 version there may not be any games yet on the PS3 but PSP has a lot of Harvest Moon games and other systems like PS2 and PS1 had a good amount of Harvest Moon Titles.

        • vadde939

Every Rune Factory prior to Oceans was exclusive to Nintendo systems.
          And as for Harvest Moon:
          Nintendo Systems- 26 games
Sony Systems- 7 games (and thats including the multiple Back to Nature ports)
The majority of the HM/RF fanbase has always been on Nintendo systems. That is why the Wii version has a better chance of localization.

  • Zero_Destiny

    X) Can’t wait for the game, *fingers crossed* for BOTH versions though I think I’d prefer the PS3 so I can play it on a nice TV but any version is fine. I hope the dialogue models are fully animated with blinking, breathing and all that other fun stuff but just the thought of having your actual clothes being shown in the dialogue parts by far would make up for a lack of that. All the customization of clothing reminds me of Dragon Quest IX I hope it’ll have just as many fun clothes. Really want this game now. Hope the action parts aren’t too tagged-on I haven’t played a Rune Factory yet but I love Harvest Moon. So super excited for it.

  • shy_mel

But can I rub the townspeople like in Animal Parade?

    • puchinri

That would be quite nice, wouldn’t it~?

  • Well, I’m buying it day one like RF3 (If it comes out over here), but I hope it does a bit better in sales. I heard RF3 sold pretty poorly over in JPN.

  • Runeys?

  • This game looks really interesting. It looks like a resurrection of Dark Cloud 2.

  • puchinri

Well that’s nice news. I’m getting more and more excited for the game. What are the chances that Xseed can nab this before Natsume does? …Has Natsume ever worked on a HM game of any kind with voice-work?

  • Caligula

A button to revert back from ridiculous costumes during cut scenes? Huh, I personally like ruining the mood with ridiculous outfits. Good times ruining emotional Tales of the Abyss scenes dressed in Abyss Ranger costumes and swimsuits.

  • Kai2591

I love games which feel really ‘alive’.

Even simple greetings from other characters makes it a lot nicer~
