Solid Snake May Be Envious Of This Spell In Dark Souls

By Spencer . February 3, 2011 . 6:36pm

imageHeroes in Dark Souls are armed with weapons and magic, Hidetaka Miyazaki, Producer/Director, explained as a knight shot a small fireball.

Attack spells are fairly straightforward, so Miyazaki took some time to demonstrate some of the more unusual magic From Software added to Dark Souls. One spell transforms your character’s body from flesh to iron. While this enchantment protects the hero from sword strikes, it also greatly restricts movement. Imagine wearing three lead vests while walking underwater. That’s roughly how the hero moved. Evading attacks was impossible since this spell also canceled the dodge roll. But, who needs to evade attacks when you can resist them in the first place?

Another spell transforms the hero into a tall vase. Similar to Snake from the Metal Gear Series, you can creep through a stage as a background object. This spell isn’t designed to decoy enemies, it’s made to trick invading players. Miyazaki asked the demonstrator to move to a row of jugs and the knight, dressed as vase, fit right in. Stand still you may be able to pull a surprise attack. Well, that’s if the invader doesn’t destroy all of the jars they see in their path. Once you attack the vase shatters, revealing the player.

It appears the team at From Software are implementing new elements, like stealth, to suit different play styles.

Well, that’s if the invader doesn’t destroy all of the jars they see in their path.

In every single game I’ve ever played with breakable boxes and vases, I destroy them at first sight. I don’t think this trick would work too well on me, but it’s still a nice little addition. Hell, they might even get me on my weapon swing recovery after breaking the boxes/vases.

Same, Especially if breaking them entails some sort of Loot Get!

      • Ereek

On that note, I admit to being attracted to shiny things as well as boxes/vases, which has gotten me killed more than a few times on 4-2 in Demon’s Souls.

Even if it’s only a worthless grass, I just can’t bring myself to not pick it up.

        • Code

rar, grass in never useless in Demons Souls, I’ve eaten literally fields of it +o+

          • Ereek

Nah, Grass was pretty worthless for me after a point. I ended up having about 500 grasses in storage by the time I hit New Game+4. And the grasses you find in 4-2 that are “trapped” so to speak are the lowest form of grass. Their whole existence is to get you killed by monsters.

          • Code

            Yeah that is true >w<' it does reach a point where the only grass you really use is the high level grasses, and most of the low stuff I usually just carry to cap off my HP bar opo;

    • Code

Now a spell that turns you into something people wouldn’t try and break, like a rock, or a bush, perhaps more useful — actually just hiding behind an actual bush or rock then catching someone off guard with Soul Sucker would be even more useful +o+

      • Kai2591

Or a tree or maybe a lamp on the ceiling. That would be fun and hilarious.

        • Code

Haha that’s be great >w<; See if you were disguised as something that wasn't smashable, it'd be so much better.

          • Kai2591

Exactly. Or at least something that doesn’t look obviously smash-able.

    • Draparde

lol in demon souls i tend to roll into everything breakable myself XD

I’m not sure if you played Demons Souls, but I honestly can’t remember if you can even get stuff out of vases in another player’s world. Even if you can though, the tension of either being invaded, or invading, is so high and you’re usually so scared of someone popping out that those kind of treasure hunts don’t really happen. This is a really good strategy and is a good indication that From’s considering Demons Souls and how to improve the formula for this game.

      • Ereek

I actually didn’t find invasions in Demon’s Souls to be too intense, but I also played PvP right when the game came out and before people started using cheap tactics. By the time people started finding them out, I was already level 300 and had pretty much finished everything possible.

  • Barrit

Jumping out of a vase to own someone. Now that’s gangsta

  • PrinceHeir

    what’s this vase doing here?

    *smash

    found you “!”

    :)

    • Guest

lol who DOESN’T just randomly smash a vase anyway in JRPG’s?

      • Icon

        very good point.

    • Boris_Althema

then you hear the metal gear alert theme. :))

  • SlashZaku

Not gonna lie: I came in here expecting another crossover of sorts…

  • HarryHodd

Ha ha this game is gonna be awesome.

  • Icon

Slowly, but surely, FromSoftware is gaining serious worldwide recognition with these games. Good for them!

    • Ladius

Even their past titles were wonderful, but it’s good to see them so popular now :)

So the lesson of the story is “if it moves, kill it. If it dosen’t move, kill it anyway”

  • Hexen

although kinda weird to find a vase in some bizzare locations
