Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Shadow Mode DLC Has Custom CPU Fighting Styles

By Ishaan . February 7, 2011 . 10:14am

The earliest downloadable content pack for Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will come in the form of two characters — Jill Valentine and Shuma Gorath. DLC pack #2, however, will feature something a little different.

The second DLC pack will add a new mode to the game, dubbed “Shadow Mode.” In this mode, CPU-controlled opponents will have custom fighting styles based on the style of notable real world Marvel vs. Capcom 3 players. Each pack will contain three teams of characters custom-programmed in this manner.

The first Shadow Mode pack, for instance, will be based on the fighting styles of the game’s producer, Ryota Niitsuma, assistant producer, Akihito Kadowaki, and one of the development team’s QA leads.

Capcom are already hinting at “personalities you know” for future Shadow Mode DLC packs. No doubt we’ll be seeing the likes of professional tournament players programmed into the game soon enough, which sounds like a fantastic way to inject a little more variety to the singleplayer experience.

  • I love how DLC adds life into the games after release! Truly splendid. I do hope that these packs contain more characters though (Ada Wong please, more fantastic four members)

    • Ya it’s like it was already on the disc, and they just turn the option on. All for use a extra 5 to 10 dollars!

      • they didn’t say it will cost money for this yet, have they? Regardless,
        I agree with you.

        • Belenger

          Its Capcom, at best its gonna be like the SSF4 DLCs where you could download the whole costume pack to see the other people wearing the clothes you didn’t want to buy.

    The idea of going up against a perfect, flawless, inhuman Daigo is terrifying. ;_;

    • M’iau M’iaut

      A member of Clannad’s ‘daigo family’ Shuma Gorath is certainly not. Although he/she/we/it was likely designed as a Shub-Niggurath wannabe.

      • Yui

        See, I intend to watch Clannad some time in the near future, so I imagine at some point I will get what you’re saying. But right now, I’m just…lost. :D

        EDIT: The Lovecraft reference, with some research, I understand, though. Your usage of “we” there is also horrific. XD

        • M’iau M’iaut

          From a western standpoint, no writer exhibited better grasp of things in the depths of the psyche that go bump in the night better than Lovecraft. Shub-Niggurath, Cthulu or any of those guys are not something you have wish to run across in a dark alley.

          I’ve even read that so many cultural ‘monsters’ from around the world having similar globular and snakelike forms may be wired defense mechanisms from the days we were prey.

          • Yui

            I can totally agree with that. Just visualising a Lovecraftian creature is enough to make me squeal; certainly I can appreciate something like that being a universal “flight-response-button”. His style was mysterious, exciting, superbly descriptive and creepy, and everything in horror that’s come after has tried to emulate it to some degree, so you can definitely see how he might have hit on the perfect image of some long-forgotten human predator. ;_;

    • It’s nothing like going up against the real thing. You don’t know fighting game prowess until you’ve stared into those cold, robotic eyes for which humanity is undefined and only the defeat of worthless living things like ourselves is what satisfies them.

      • Yui

        Is he…is he coming for me? Hunting down my PSN ID, waiting for an opportunity to wipe my floor at fighters? ;_;

        • Daigo combats only the strong and the beautiful, so you’re perfectly safe.

          • Yui

            …how am I supposed to interpret that?! I could be strong and beautiful! >:|

          • Were you strong and beautiful, you would be already dead.

          • What I meant is that Daigo doesn’t play the Marvel vs. Capcom games.

          • Actually, Daigo is moving on to MvC3 because he plays for money, and there’s money to be made. Of course he’ll still play SSFIV AE.

  • Announcing even MORE paid DLC before the game even releases

    Keep it classy, Capcom. As for what I’M keeping, it’s the $60 entry fee Capcom is charging for a still-incomplete game.

    • Dude, really?! Its great to know in advance that the game will be supported down the line. I do not see that which they are doing wrong.

    • Have you thought of calling the police? I mean if Capcom are holding a gun to your head, forcing you to buy the DLC, then you should press charges.

  • Well isn’t this something to look forward to?^_^ Nothing like making the A.I. feel useless on its own, now it has friends with better prowess, LOL! *Pats A.I on the back* It’s okay…^_~ Can’t wait until it releases later on this month.

    after finishing God Hand i really really want Gene or Azel to be here. just so i can yank people and dragon kick them to the Milky Way.

    please Capcom put them both along with Vergil, Megaman X, Strider, Juri and Seig Warheit heck Megaman X is japan’s most wanted list yet you ignore him. no wonder why the Versus scene isn’t that known in Japan

    imagine if the Versus series were as popular as the US. expect top JP players owning people once again.

    at least Tokido is joining the fun :)

    • Zero_Destiny

      Megaman X is SO needed, he’s the best. I’d also like to see Ryu from Breath of Fire but Capcom has shafted that series since V so I doubt I’ll see him for a long time. :( And darn you beat God Hand already. I’d love to be able to beat a game as fast as you. lol Got too much junk to take care off between school and work. Ended up only playing video game on the weekend. Was too busy to put any real time into it.

      • PrinceHeir

        i also plan on playing the BOF series. though it wasn’t given much attention in the public though :

        actually i have a AR Max(cheat device) yeah i know it defeats the purpose of beating the game but i only cheat to avoid grinding. ex in God Hand i cheat high money so that i can buy the good moves and hp at the start without grinding. i never cheat with infinite health it seems useless to me. ohh even though i also cheated with infinite orbs and inifiinite god hand duration. the game still kicks my ass. not to mention there are parts in the game where you need hold a object to proceed to the next stage. once you activate the God Hand you can’t deactivate it(like dmc’s DT) i definitely need to finish this again on Hard mode :)

        same with Xenosaga, i only cheated with items just so i can upgrade my crew with points. though i never cheated with money since i can just sell items at any quantity. though there are cheats in the device that are missing. like all equip weapons, armors and such otherwise it’s a good experience as long as you don’t overpower the game to the point where you only move forward without any strategy.

        when i plan on buying a DS or 3DS. i definitely love to use Ar Max just so i can level up dragon quest or pokemon faster :)

        • Zero_Destiny

          Breath of Fire was a great old-school series. From the second you start-up the first game you know what you’re in for. :) The second or the forth is probably the best but a lot of people also love the third. Don’t listen to the haters though. A lot of people will tell you Breath of Fire V Dragon Quarter is bad and doesn’t count but it’s awesome. It’s really diff from the other games but quite fun. I use to cheat in Pokemon all the time when I was growing up. lol I stopped cheating when I got Pearl on the DS. Oh man I still remember that I cheated so much on my Red version (not just the missing No cheat but also Game Shark cheats) that my game became so weird because of it. The weirdest things were probably that ALL my pokemon became Kangaskhan. No reason for it too. It’s not like it was a cheat I put in they just all changed into Kangaskhans. They still had their moves and their names but they all turned into Kangaskhan. That and I caught a level 500 Snorlax. Was just surfing along and a random battle happened and boom level 500 Snorlax challenged me to battle. It was weird. It’s level would change every battle I used it. It would like level 100, then level 80, then level 400, and so on. lol That brings back memories.

          • PrinceHeir

            ohhh i see. will definitely check it out :D

            ahaha i always remember the cheat in-game in the 1st generation pokemon. that when you kill “Missing No.” one of your items will suddenly become 99. which was awesome since i though it was a glitch or something O_O

            yeah i missed those cheat device. as long as it doesn’t ruin online play, it’s fine by me :)

  • Please let these shadow modes only occur in hard mode and above. I don’t fancy my chances against those that are good >_<

  • I’m sure my hardcore credentials will be questioned for saying this, but…

    This particular DLC doesn’t really interest me.

  • Tropxe

    It’ll still be the usual retarded AI but with inhuman reactions and no need to manually input moves… But just with their choices biased in certain directions. For example, say a certain player never uses projectiles, then the AI will just have a far lower chance than default AI at doing one. That’s all it’ll be.
