More classic games are coming to the PlayStation 3 in the form of the Sega Genesis Collection on the PlayStation Network, which will go on sale at the end of March, with one title from the collection being released at a time.

While regular PlayStation Network users will have to pay $4.99 for each game, PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to download each title for free, for a whole month after its release. Additionally, they’ll also get the games earlier than regular PSN users.

  • Comix Zone, FTW! Day 1, Baby!

Even though I have the Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis/Mega Drive Collection for XBOX 360 and the PSP’s Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Collection. Hey, at least it’s free for us PS plus members!

  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Streets of Rage 2, Golden Axe 2 and Comix Zone is worth the price. Espeically the first two, with Sonic 2 being argubably the finest Sonic game ever and Streets of Rage 2 still playing very well to date.

Now how about some lesser known titles :D

    • PurpleDoom

Sonic 2 is awesome. I surprisingly don’t have any modern version of it, so trophies might convince me to pick this up.

    • Yui

Sonic CD wants a word about the “arguably the finest” thing, man, and you can’t argue with Sonic CD. ;P

EDIT: Shining Force 2 is in here. What more does anyone need?!

      • Dude, lol, what?! Sonic’s finest is clearly Sonic ’06!!!!

        • Yui

TS, that was the best laugh I’ve had all day. Thank you. XD
(Were you being serious? Because Sonic ’06 was awful, man, really the worst one! XD)

          • M’iau M’iaut

Of course Tsuna’s joking. If he meant it he woulda said Shadow, Sonic R, or the one where he gets to kiss a real life Princess! You know that one with the real cool graphics.

          • Yui

            oh god, that cuts me deep ;_;
(i still love you though :D)

EDIT: I have played all those games. Does this make me unsalvageable as a person? :(

          • alundra311

            Sadly, he isn’t.

      • a) I did say “arguably” b) shamefully I’ve never played Sonic CD :(

        • Yui

          A) Haha, I know. I’m sorry, I’m an idiot. XD
          B) I take back my apologies!!! Go play it, now! It’s definitively the best Sonic ever!!! >:D

      • alundra311

Never played Sonic CD and I’d love to play it. Are they still selling this game? If so, where can I find it?

        • Yui

To my knowledge, the easiest way to play it is by getting the Sonic Gems Collection for either PS2 or GameCube if you’re in Europe or Japan, or just GC in America. Otherwise, you’d have to actually buy the game, a Mega Drive/Genesis, and MegaCD addon to play it. And that’d be the expensive option. :(

          • alundra311

Thanks. I’ll be looking out for this one.

        • capristrider

Just to let you know, there are 2 versions of SONIC CD, one with an American soundtrack and one with a Japanese soundtrack, both are good but I pefer the Japanese Sonic CD version, of which the Euro Mega CD version followed, Later SONIC CD versions which were included in the US and Euro “Sonic Gems Collection” have American only soundtrack :)

          • alundra311

            Thanks for the info. :)

    • Why doesn’t anyone like Sonic 3D Blast. ;_;

      • SneakyHawk

I do…speaking of which…I have yet to finish it. :P

      • Ren

Hey, I liked that game! Of course, it was one of the few games I actually had when growing up, so it may be just nostalgia talking. Now back to my Pokemon Trading Card Game for the gameboy! Oh the memories!

      • It’s medicore. Had it been released a few years before 1996, it would have been better recieved.

      • Zero_Destiny

Sonic 3D Blast :D That was fun. It was different but fun.

  • Surprisingly Im still not a PS Plus member, they continue to offer stuff I already have in other forms (ie Sonc 2…but on Virtual console, good game but not enough to buy it again).

    • Kunio_kun

I’d do it now while you can still get Stacking for free and/or the buy a year and get three additional months free (if that’s still running, I’m not sure). I’ve already owned about four of the featured downloads but it’s still saved me around fifty bucks on top of the subscription fee…
If you’re at all like me and see something worth purchasing once every couple of weeks, then it’s a good deal. Lots of free content you may not be seeing because it’s not announced to the general public…

    Or you could just pick up Sonic’s Genesis Collection, I found it $14 new in a bargain bin and get all those and a whole lot more (43 more games in fact) >w<' Of course nice little bonus for PSN Plus members, I feel like PSN Plus still needs something to give it extra umph to bother purchasing. Although I may still pick it up sooner or later just because all the savings in the PSN Imports section would pay for a Plus Membership in itself opo;

    • kupomogli

The only bad thing about PSN Plus is all the free games expire. So once your Plus membership runs out, you’ll no longer own the free games. Not sure about the Avatars and such. However, when you say discounts if you mean the games costing half price, or a couple dollars off, then yeah, I think since you actually pay for those you own them regardless if PSN Plus has expired or not.

I also agree about Sonic’s Genesis Collection, but for $4.99 each, the multiplayer games better be online capable.

      • Code

Yeahh, the Import section has most of the games are marked down from $6 to $3 with Plus membership and there’s a good handful of them there, more then enough to make Plus worth while (particularly if you wanna pick up all the classic shmups), and where your buying them you keep them afterwards.

But yeah I wouldn’t expect online capable multiplayer — I’d love it, but for $4.99 I don’t think it’ll happen.

  • hush404

You know… I got PS+ about a month or so ago… and it’s been paying off every since.

  • Kunio_kun

Looking forward to getting my Roo on in SoR2!!!

  • PrinceHeir

Shenmue I and II and Jet Set Radio please :P

    • Zero_Destiny

Add Grandia II and Skies of Arcadia and you pretty much listed my top 5 fav Dreamcast games :D Please SEGA we NEED these games on PSN/XBOX Arcade.

  • capristrider

Looking into my crystal ball I can see Sega releasing the same sets of 16-bit games on the PS4, X720, Wii 2 and iPhone 7. Really Sega! you have such a big catalogue of games across many generations such as Saturn, Dreamcast and a such a great Arcade heritage. Personally I would love to see other Sega MegaDrive games from companies like Capcom and Konami! (Sega even coded some Capcom games!)
