PlayStation Network Tells North America A Vagrant Story

By Ishaan . February 27, 2011 . 9:01pm

Vagrant Story may have appeared on the PlayStation Network in Europe two years ago, but the U.S. missed out on its digital release…until now. Following in the footsteps of Xenogears, the game will be available this week for the usual $5.99.

With Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII already available on PSN, Xenogears seeing its release last week, Vagrant Story coming this week, and Parasite Eve confirmed for release in the future, the PSOne Classics section is now home to a wealth of Square Enix games.

All that remain now are Bushido Blade and Chrono Cross…

Damn.. my backlog just keeps getting longer…

    • GamerKT

      That’s what she said.

      • Yu_TheKing

XD That never gets old, does it?

“All that remain now are Bushido Blade and Chrono Cross…”

And Legend of Mana, and Brave Fencer Musashi, and SaGa Frontier 1 and 2, and Parasite Eve 2, and Threads of Fate, and Einhander, and Chocobo’s Dungeon 2 (better than you may realize). ;) Love all of those games.

Seriously great news though. Will gladly buy Vagrant Story again to play on PSP, even though I still have the disc. I’ve been loving playing FFIX that way. I even play it on my TV through the PSP Go with a component cable, with a bluetooth Sixaxis controller. Better than the PS1 discs – faster loading times, temporary save anywhere, and I can unplug it and take it with me.

    • Tobal No. 1 and Ehrgeiz. Especially Ehrgeiz. Loved the stat-building-via-diet mechanism in the mini-RPG.

    • both Threads of Fate and Legend of Mana were confirmed back in December for a North America release.

      • Pichi

Still waiting for them to show up on the store. The wait is torture!

  • It´s just to good to be true … i can´t take my eyes of the PSN this month :´)

  • GamerKT

This is for PS1? Those graphics are (were) pretty damn good.

    • I just Googled that screen up, but chances are it’s from an emulator or something. PS1 games look way more aliased than that, heh.

      • That actually looks like it’s been played on the PS2’s cleaner texture setting or something. I am not sure if the PS3 still does that with PS1 ones or not, but I know that when you put PS1 games in a PS2 with that particular setting on, then they tend to look a bit like that.

This is a game I like but I’ve never finished. Once you hit 40% you have three directions you can take, each leading to a different boss. Unless you create some custom weapons specifically for these bosses and grind these weapons to take more damage on the types these bosses are you’re going to have to chain the bosses to death. Chain 45, 44 damage, chain 46, 45 damage, chain 47, 46 damage, etc, etc, etc. I got bored and quit.

  • Exkaiser

    Here I was expecting a $9.99 price, but I’ll definitely take a $5.99 release.

  • Dodzkie

I miss playing this game, one of the best! :)

  • Zero_Destiny

Ah Prince was talking about this. I’m SO glad it’s only $6. SE please keep up the PSN love (and if possible make future titles this price :D).

  • vrakanox

I was just thinking I hope they bring this over! and yeah like neo firenze said…..yeah just everything on his list.

  • Is his butt cheeks exposed?

  • BelmontHeir

Great game, I still own the disc but could never manage to beat it. I hate how you can get so far into the game and then suddenly your weapons are useless against a particular boss.

  • NoElixirs

Good. This game has one of the most complex and multifarious crafting systems I’ve used. Once you finish Vagrant Story, you’ll realize how shallow and meretricious most crafting systems are.

  • Wackoramaco87

So very happy with all these lovely classics coming out. Finally a chance to experience them, after hearing so much! =D

    • Croix

I don’t think this is the case (I always told myself it was just skin-colored patches of…something), but that doesn’t stop him from joining the ranks of Ramza Beoulve in his last set of armor.

  • Alternatively, “Well aren’t you just cheeky today.”

  • Testsubject909

I know it’s a bit unrelated, but how about Vandal Heart? I always associate Vagrant Story to Vandal Heart since I played both at around the same time, and their titles kept confusing me back and forth.

Seriously, would enjoy seeing Vandal Heart available on PS1 Classics.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Vandal Hearts (and the first sequel) is just maybe the darkest, harshest world ever to grace an RPG. Even SMT doesn’t get so bleak in places. The MC is also one of the purest SOBs a’going — a hero he ain’t.

It definitely belongs out with the other missing in action PS1 games. In terms of quality it’s superb and does some things with the combat that are almost unique. But if it ever does show up, be aware what is inside.

      • Zero_Destiny

I LOVE the first one but never played the second. It definitely earned it’s M rating though lol There is a Vandal Hearts 3 (or maybe it’s a Gaiden) on the PSN though. It was made just for it as a download only. I’ve heard good things about it but never got around to getting it. Probably because of it’s look. Looks ugly to me. I know I know horrible aren’t I. I might Download it one day when I got some spare cash. There’s just too many good games right now and the PSN is getting stuffed full of some goodies too. Can’t be reckless with my cash. Know if it’s any good?

  • d19xx

    Vagrant Story, bro.

Seriously, I miss this game. Too bad Squeenix never released Tobal No.2 outside Jp. -_-

  • Aiddon

Ah Matsuno, not a bad game to his credit (well, except FFXII but that wasn’t his fault since he never finished it). Hopefully he gets inspired to make a sequel

  • It may not be Square games, but Tomba 1 and 2 please!

  • Wait a minute! This games was not released in the US yet?

    I didn’t know that…

It’s been on my Spanish PSP for a while now. :D

    Anyway, enjoy. :)

  • [The Hunter] Doomrider

Guildenstern, lovely as always. And Ashley’s butt too!

Enjoy, people. I still have my copy, and it feels goooood =P One of the best RPGs ever!

  • Legend of Mana can take its sweet time for all I care (I was seriously disappointed by that game).

As for Vagrant Story…Truly an RPG that seperated the men from the boys. Sigh maybe one day I will become a man :(

  • Congrats to the NA brothers! Just one thing tho. It says up there that we got the title two years ago, but I believe that’s not correct. I remember this being up there for download around the very end of 2009. Well, technically, that was two years ago (2011-2009=2) but I’d say it’s been up there since a year and a couple of months ago, not two years.

I know, no one cares, but I had to say it still :P

Do get this game NA folks, it’s really good.

  • “Following in the footsteps of Xenogears, the game will be available this week for the usual $5.99.”

Unfortunately, Xenogears is actually $9.99. I know this well because I have an acquaintance who actually did not buy it at least partially on the basis of price…

    • In my 3rd world country, where PS3 games costs 125 dollars (yes, you read that well), 9.99 is actually kind of cheap.

      • Agreed, and I paid for it even though I still own my original copy and have very little intention of even playing the PSN remake. Why? Because you have to support this stuff if you want to see more of it.

    • Your acquaintance is really, really cheap then.

  • I just need Brave Fencer Musashi, Threads of Fate, Tomba 1 and 2, Breath of Fire 3 and 4, Dragon Warrior 7, Persona 2, and Lunar 2 and I’ll be alright.

  • I still can’t get over the fact that Ashley’s butt is exposed. It actually makes me rather gleeful that for once, a male character gets subjected to the same ridiculously fanservicey costumes that most female video game characters have to wear. XD

  • Nice. I’ll probably buy it if/when it ever drops to $2.99 like RE2 was this past weekend.

  • It’s coming this week???
    So… like tomorrow???

(I’ve waited so long for this…)

  • ( 0_0) Yeeeeess.

  • puchinri

Here’s to hoping we get Threads of Fate and Legend of Mana soon too. Saga Frontier 1 and 2 couldn’t hurt either~.
