Troy Baker Teases His Role In Catherine

By Ishaan . March 2, 2011 . 2:10pm

Maybe you know him as Kanji Tatsumi from Persona 4, Yuri from Tales of Vesperia or Snow Villiers from Final Fantasy XIII. If you don’t, those roles might be interesting to look up, since it appears as though Troy Baker has been cast as Vincent in Atlus’ upcoming horror puzzler/adventure, Catherine.

Baker’s been teasing the role on his Facebook page. His first post, made yesterday, stated: “I will find myself in a bizarre love triangle…” An hour later, Baker posted: “The only way I’ll survive is to climb and solve the puzzles…”

No other voice actors have claimed the parts of Catherine, Katherine or any of the supporting cast yet. Perhaps we’ll hear from them in the coming days or weeks.

A big thanks to Chris Taran for the awesome tip!

  • SolidusSnake

I guess Vincent is gonna show us how a REAL HERO takes care of business.

  • Ereek

Troy’s a great actor, I can see him fitting the role nicely.

  • darkfox1

i swear some of you guys were saying Troy Baker would be good and well here it is. you guys were correct then. Nice choice and to people who made guesses saying Troy Baker might be Vincents VA Good Game

  • Ummm… this will be interesting…
I still wonder who will do the C/Katherines there are a lot of nice english women’s voices out there.

And thanks to this article for reminding me once again that i havent played tales of vesperia…..

    And, persona <3

    • Mary Elizabeth McGlynn would make an amazing Katherine.

      • SolidusSnake

      • And I might be doing a wild guess here but i think Wendee Lee could suit Catherine (using a sexy voice for most of her sentences xD)

        • Aiddon

I actually had Wendee Lee’s voice in my head most of the time for Katherine. For Catherine….maybe Laura Bailey or Cristina Valenzuela since she’s significantly younger than Katherine.

          • I was thinking Wendee Lee for Katherine as well with Catherine being voiced by Bridget Hoffman

          • Really? Umm, i think Wendee Lee’s voice would go with someone more “cheery” like Catherine, Katherine seems to be more calm (when she isnt in betch mode)

          • Aiddon

when I think Katherine I think Wendee’s Faye voice. She has done far more elegant, sober voices like the Fairy Queen in Odin’s Sphere and Charlotte in Vampire Hunter D. Seriously, put that woman in front of a mic and she can do nearly anything

          • Haha yeah lol, and when i think in Wendee, i think in the cheerful Selphy from Rune Factory, the happy girl i forgot her name in Hack games xD, aaand Tinon from Mimana iya chronciles and i think she also makes Haruhi’s voice from the anime The Melancholy of Haruhi, and a whole lot of games.

I love that woman, as a professional of course, she can do anything, anywhere, im seriously in love with her voice

  • Come on, please let JYB be Tobias, please!

Awesome pick! Oddly Im rewatching Bleach and he voices the villain of this arc, Jin Kariya! Wait, hes the voice of Pain in Naruto Shippuden?! Epic!

  • nyoron

I’m generally indifferent to dub actors, but Troy Baker is one of the few that I can say I genuinely like. Good choice.

  • shy_mel

Seems like he’s doing more than teasing as he has the website link on his Facebook.

  • MisterDandylion

    Wow… Just wow….

And then people don’t want me to relate this game with Persona xD

This game is sounding better and better (thanks for the intel, Ishaan :) )

Seriously, I can imagine Vincent going “WE CAN SMASH THEM ALL. LET’S DO THIS” with the sheep against the various horrors of the nightmare world xD

  • Yay~ My wish came true.

    • Aoshi00

Nice, you called it first :) I liked Troy Baker as Snow too, he’s definitely humorous enough for the bewildered Vincent.. Didn’t know he was also Kanji in P4.. I didn’t get that far in the Eng. version.. I just beat the 8 bit castle in the Jpn ver.. and the Jpn Kanji was Seki Tomokazu.. And he’s Yuri in Vesperia too and he was sassy and funny.. but I’m not as familiar w/ US VAs compared to Jpn VAs though… I’m glad I recognize the several roles he did :)

Vincent was actually a hard role to fill, because Yamadera Koichi is pretty much the king of male seiyuu and extremely versatile.

      • I just started playing FFXIII last week (lol for only 3 days so far) and even tho I don’t like the dialogue or most of the characters in the game, Troy Baker’s work makes him sound the most human of them all. And the lady doing Fang’s not so bad either.. she’s just a female Balthier, imo.

As for Persona 4, I truly don’t remember Kanji’s voice. But then again, I think I hated a god part of the Persona 3 & 4 dubs, so I easily forgot them. lol I stopped playing P4 right at the 8-bit castle part. It’s not like I didn’t like the game, I just got tired of video games at the time and just haven’t picked the game up since then.

lol and Vesperia.. XDD I love Vesperia. I’ve been meaning to pick up another copy of the game, since I originally sold the 360 copy to buy the PS3 version, when I heard there was going to be one. ._. But as we all know, it’s still not out.

        • Aoshi00

wow, you waited a whole year eh.. not that you missed much.. I think so too, I think Troy made Snow sound more sincere and likable.. the Jpn one just sounds like an annoying idiot, hero this hero that.. I think Troy and Laura Bailey (?) had more chemistry… Oh, I loved Fang’s Eng voice too, the Aussie accent was more fun and unique than the Jpn ver… Vanille’s was a bit weird though, her accent was all over the place, sometimes American sometimes Australian (I think that actress had stayed in the US for too long…)

Yeah I’ve only played very little of P3/4 in Eng, but I know the Jpn dub was really good.. I also didn’t feel like playing after that part, each dungeon was longer than the last.. it’s not really my thing even though I want to continue w/ the story.. Paku Romi (Ed in FMA) was the kid in the uniform and hat..

I haven’t finished Vesperia still, I can’t finish long games these days.. hopefully the PS3 ver would be brought over after Graces F and Xillia.. I got Graces F now, the chars are fun since you played them as kids at first because they turned to adults.. kinda slow though.. my friend beat it in 50 hrs and loved they story, he said it’s shorter than Vesperia which took him like 75 hrs… Xenoblade is like 100 hrs long and I’m only 20 hrs in.. I took my time w/ Last Story and beat it at ~43.. I think some people beat it in 30 skipping the sidequests.. short games like Catherine are my thing now :)

  • I seriously love his voice in Tales of Vesperia… His voice fits Yuri perfectly.. Almost like it belongs to the character.. And he sound different in FFXIII as well, which is something I find amazing..

    • Neckbear

They’re voice ACTORS. That’s their job, dude.

…That’s something Cristina Vee could learn, by the way. Actually ACTING like the character, I mean.

      • Yui

I always got the feeling Cristina Vee was one of those typecast VAs. I mean, all her characters sound the same, and they all seem to act the same, too…so it seemed sensible that she only ever play one role under many different names.

I like her, but I do agree that she could stand to put some variety into her performances. :D

      • Whoomp

Well, it’s not surprising that anyone finds something like the discovery of a capable voice actor to be amazing with the current standards of the profession. It’s the sad truth about voice actors (japanese and american alike), some just seem to come in and talks for a bit with their “signature voice” and call that it a day, no effort and no respect for the material they are working with. Lazy acting isn’t forgiven just because it’s not your face we see on the screen.

      • well, not all Voice actors are good even though its their job..

      • And most of them suck at doing other voices.

      • Caligula

Hm, well, if voice actors are supposed to be able to change their voices drastically, I don’t think Johnny Yong Bosch got the memo.

        • Aoshi00

Well, not all VAs need to have a versatile range.. it’s like actors, some get to play one kind of role well and they’re a bit type cast… it’s like Sir Anthony Hopkins playing creepy chars, he does so many of those roles but he’s not a bad actor… or like Keanu works in Sci-Fi or romance, he’s kinda detached it just worked, that’s his signature. It’s like Koyasu mostly voicing handsome chars because his voice is just so dreamy, he’s really good as Johnny here.. Or Yamaguchi Kappei (Ranma / Arslan) has done the similar kind of role for a big chunk of his career because his voice is very boy-ish and young sounding, but he has branched off doing other more comedic/ugly roles like Raimon in Eyeshield 21 or L in Death Note w/ his deep voice.Of course there are some VAs who are really versatile.. like Minagawa Junko has 3 roles in Catherine.. I don’t listen to a lot of Eng dub, but liked Johnny Yong bosch for what he did, like Rush in Last Remnant or Juto in Magna Carta 2, he was really gentle in there. I haven’t heard him as Vash the Stampede in Trigun though.. but he’s certainly a good VA. But yea, Yamadera Koichi was Spike/Kaji/Ryoga/P-chan, and Mitsuishi Kotono was Sailormoon/Misato/crazy chick in Excel Saga.. veterans there no doubt. But some VAs are cast for one kind of role mostly because they’re just so good at it.. like some actresses have really boyish voices and play young boys a lot.. like Paku Romi (Ed in FMA/Ueki in the Law o Ueki/Zidane in FF9/dissidia..), but she could do womanly voices..

          • Caligula

Oh, certainly, I won’t disagree with that. Although I’m really tired of JYB’s voice, I do think he’s one of the better VAs out there, and I’d rather hear a character voiced well by him than voiced poorly by somebody with range any day.

      • Apollonis

I don’t know, I think there’s a difference between acting ability and voice shifting ability. Some actors can do an amazing range of different-sounding voices, while some always sound like themselves–but as long as emotion and tone and nuance come across, I think that counts as good acting.

      • landlock

Tell that to Steve Blum he sounds almost exactly the same in every anime/game he has done and it hasn’t done him any harm.

  • It would be great to hear JYB and Yuri Lowenthal (as Tobias and Jonathan respectively). As for Orlando, maybe a voice like Motochika’s from SenBasa3 (I don’t remember who his VA is)

Anyway, I’m glad to hear more Catherine news, eeee~

  • Neckbear

Whoa, whoa, not Steve Blum, Atlus?

    I’m disappointed.

    • Aiddon

Blum only does unionized work, so Atlus probably wanted to keep localization costs low. Still, it would have been a weird connection seeing as Vincent is voiced by Spike from Cowboy Bebop

      • Aoshi00

I wanted Steve Blum too because Yamadera Koichi also voiced Spike in the Jpn ver of Cowboy Bebop, but Troy Baker is not bad, not bad at all… Blum could be a cool easy going Orlando or even Johnny though..

  • O_o Shiiiit I didn’t like Snow Villiers’ voice !! :(

    • amagidyne

He was much, much better as Yuri in Tales of Vesperia.

I played it some time after I played FFXIII (didn’t like Snow), and still loved his performance, so I don’t think you need to worry.

      • Whoomp

This is truth, I rarely react to voicactors but his work as Yuri in Vesperia really stuck out to me as pretty darn solid. And about Snow, geez, I had such problems with him as a character that the person who was behind the voice spewing line after line of cheesy “hero”-crap didn’t seem relevant.

      • He was excellent as Kanji in Persona 4 as well. I love Troy Baker as a VA.

      • That’s odd but yeah he was definitely better in ToV… Square puts a gun to his head or what ? lol

    • Aiddon

It’s not his fault; that dialogue was so bad even he couldn’t save it.

      • Aoshi00

True, but Troy Baker actually made me like Snow more, his performance was actually better than the Jpn Snow, since the Jpn script was even more cheesy and harder to swallow :(… He did what he could..

        • Aiddon

damn, now that’s something that makes my head spin.

      • + 1 “Damn I want to save everyone but I can’t do it… I need to power up !” FF XIII sample, yeah you’re right ^^

    • Hraesvelgr

Really? I liked his voice, I just didn’t like his dialogue. I thought FFXIII had really good voice acting, but damn if the characters and dialogue weren’t awful.

      • Well, hon, it’s not all sugars and rainbows.

    • Barrit

I’m not sure if it was his voice or the dialogue.. but I hated Snow in FFXIII also. I think it was just the character or maybe the tone of voice.. he just came off really cocky and annoying, just seemed like a total douche lol. It made me stop playing the US version and I imported the English+Chinese version so I can have the Jp voices instead. It made a huge difference for me.

      • Aoshi00

I think it’s mostly the dialouge.. I felt the complete opposite, usually I prefer original Jpn dub too, but I thought the Eng. dialogue was improved (relatively compared to the org. Jpn script).. the Jpn Snow annoyed the heck out of me but somehow Troy Baker made him sound more sincere and funny.. There were 3 drama CDs for FF13, I kinda wish the US VAs would dub those as well because I really like the Eng cast..

  • First heard Troy back in the day when Fullmetal Alchemist had its first anime show. I loved him then and still do now! So glad he’s playing Vincent. Wonder who will voice K/Catherine.

I think Kari Wahlgren would be a good Catherine and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn would make a perfect Katherine.

  • Darkrise

    … Steel Guard!

    • Nobody likes Steel Guard.

      • Aoshi00

I like Steel Guard :) It rocked!

        • lol first time seeing that video. XDD It’s soo hilarious. Tho it would’ve been funnier if he was like “It would’ve have been a game over if you used one of those phoenix downs we have on me. We could continue the battle and watch the awesome steel guard!”

lol seriously, for RPGs that have the game over when your controlled character dies is retarded.. especially if you have items that brings people back from the dead. ._.

          • Aoshi00

I watched that video so many times, they’re so lovable, made the chars more human didn’t it :) I know.. that really bugged me too… the AI should have the healer use Phoenix down… in Xenoblade, your healer would revive the main char if they have a chance, it really made you sweat if they have enough time to do it in a boss battle, once you’re revived then you’re given a chance to turn the tide you know. Oh well.. FF13 was FF13… I appreciate the easy mode on 360, made it less frustrating (especially the last 3 chapters)..

  • Caligula

Whaaaaaaaat. He did Kanji? I knew he did Yuri, but… never would’ve guessed Kanji.

I really like the sound of his voice, so I definitely wouldn’t mind if he did work for Catherine.

  • I love Troy Baker. At a convention one time, I asked him about being credited as Regal in Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World(Source:, and he said he thought Crispin Freeman still did the voice.

He signed the inside cover of the box art with “Shhhhhhh!”. x3

  • I’m cool with that. I can always count on Atlus with these choices.

Now the harder part is K/Catherine.

I’m betting on Keith Silverstein as Orlando.

If Steve Blum can’t have Vincent, he can have Johnathan. If not, then Steve Burton.

Tobias totally looks someone that Bryce Papaenbrook can do nicely.

  • Apollonis

Kanji is dreamy, therefore Troy is too =)

  • Troy Baker is a great guy. His voice work is truly exceptional.

  • Angeru_Lito

That video just remind me of something… get bend! and Investigation team Gooooooo!

  • Zero_Destiny

Troy Baker is perfect just look at his TvTrope page lol:[] It should work perfectly :D

  • PrinceHeir

    that’s cool :D

though im sure everyone here is expecting Steve Blum to do the voice but it’s all good :)

i wonder who will voiced Catherine and Katherine? im expecting at least Michelle Ruff to do either of these ^^

  • ForeverFidelis

I still remember obsessing over Spider’s voice in Megaman X Command Mission when I was a wee lad

  • cmurph666

  • Dimentionalist

Vincent: O brilliant blade of coldest steel, rend the infinite darkness and crush my enemies to nothing! YOU’RE FINISHED! SAVAGE SHEEP FURY!

  • Xeahnort

Troy is a good actor but also a liar. He confirmed serveral times that Tales of Vesperia for PS3 was coming to the western market. However, The PS3 version never was localized.

Btw: I miss Crispin Freeman, he did a great job as Heat in DDS

    • Ohhh~ I agree on that extra note. :3 I originally was a big fan of Crispin Freeman, then I fell out of love with dubbed anime. XD

    • Crispin Freeman was a fantastic Togusa in Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, too. :)

      • [The Hunter] Doomrider

And a fantastic Albedo in Xenosaga. God, what an AWESOME character. Truly one of the best villains in videogames. Crispin Freeman made him even better. I will always respect him for that performance <3 (his other performances as well, but that one in particular)

    • He didn’t confirm it was coming. He only said they had all the lines for the PS3 version recorded already and had no idea why it wasn’t coming out.

      • Speaking of Tales of…I wonder who our voices are for Tales of Graces F (and why still no information…I saw a PS3 boxart floating around)

        • Zero_Destiny

Oh you didn’t hear? All the charas in Graces are voiced by Johny Young Bosch. lol I kid. Calm down they just announced the game. It’ll probably take a little while before Namco is ready to say anything about it. Don’t worry though I haven’t played a TALES yet with an awful dub so it should work. :D And I’m sure once Namco says anything it’ll right up on this site. :)

        • lol I loved when Graces f was announced for English release, someone edited the wikipedia page and listed JYB as the voice actor for all the characters — male and female.

          • Zero_Destiny

He’s just THAT talented lol I mean we all heard his Renton voice he just has to take it a little bit higher and presto you got a female voice. XD

  • Meh….I liked him as Kanji. So we’ll see. Wish they would use lesser known talent. I’m too familiar with the usuals.

  • “I will find myself in a bizarre love triangle…” An hour later, Baker posted: “The only way I’ll survive is to climb and solve the puzzles…”

Wow…Who knew Voice Acting could be so tough and hectic :O

  • Wait….Yuri Lowell as Vincent?

    • lol if I had the money, I’d totally do that too.

  • O.O It seems like I’m the only you knew that Troy Baker did Kanji in P4. XD. Though it was soo weird for me to play FF 13 listening to Snow’s dialogue, because I kept thinking of Kanji! XD The same could be said for Serah. I was expecti her lines to end wit “Senpai!” Or call herself “Risette”.

    Okay, I’m lying about that.

I agree w/ Hraesvelgr and Aoshi000. I LOVED his role as Snow, but his dialogue was a bit chessy at times, then again, That was part of his character. X3

I liked Steel Guard, too. :3

  • Woah, he’s sexy.
