Media-Create Offer Wisdom On Phantasy Star Portable 2: Infinity Sales

By Ishaan . March 4, 2011 . 10:00am

If you looked at this week’s Japanese software sales chart, you probably know that Phantasy Star Portable 2: Infinity released last week and debuted at the top of the top-20 sales chart with 206,654 units sold in its first week.

While Phantasy Star Portable 2: Infinity was the top-selling game for the week, sales tracker Media-Create report that it only sold through 56.55% of its initial shipment, which they feel is a little slow, considering the original Phantasy Star Portable 2 sold through 76.48% of its own shipment in its first week when it released last year.

Phantasy Star Portable 2: Infinity is an upgraded version of Phantasy Star Portable 2 with features such as new race designs, story content, quests and items, and even a tie-up with KFC in the form of Colonel Sanders making an appearance as a partner character.

It’s an expansion of sorts so its bound to sell less than the original.

    • MHP2ndG says hi.

      • Monster Hunter is in its own different universe than other games.

So everything related to monster hunter and specially in japan, is all a special case xD

        • You’re right, silly me.

Monster Hunter Portable 2nd says hi. But I do see your point(MH is a phenomenon) The Kingdom Hearts series pretty much proves that expansions usually sells lower than the original.

I think this game did well for an expansion and it was released on 3ds week. That and the NGP coming later this year and people are still too absorbed with MHP3. Just about everything is against this game, but it still sold well. Good job Sega. Western release please…

  • And it was #1 , so that means all games were selling lower than usual, I guess.
But it was #1, it beat Nintendogs + cats.
But when are we going to hear if its going to be released here?

  • Code

I’m kind of hoping it gets localized, I haven’t really played any Phantasy Star Portable (I was warred off initially by the fact it used Phantasy Star Universe’s engine) but I’ve heard excellent things about PSP2 and the series on PSP in general. So if this gets localized I’m definitely going to give it a shot >w<

    • PSPo2 is actually much better than even the original PSO. It’s the only game released since PSO that improves upon that formula without making any hindering compromises.

    • PSU was like a failed experiment… then Sakai tried to redeem SEGA´s attempt with a more complete gaming experience making the portable series what PSU should have been at the beginning

    • I dont think they will localize it, it would really depend on how much new stuff there are and how did PSP2 (normal version) sold here…

  • raymk

Yeah it already came out before i’d expect that with any enhanced port. I still want this in the U.S with vc3.

  • I just want to know how they will link PSO universe with PSU =( . Rico and Flowen, Olga Flow, a Pioneer ship in a trailer, then this:

Can´t wait for it to be announced over here :´(

  • Fonic

I really hope Sega announces this and especially Valkyria 3 for localization soon. Guess there’s a good chance E3 might be the time.

  • Draparde

I loved PSP2 (and PSP for that matter) so i cant wait for this game to show up i figure its sales might go up overtime.

  • Man I hope this means Sega won’t bring this to the states. I love Phantasy Star.
