Legend of Mana Hits PlayStation Network This Week

By Ishaan . March 20, 2011 . 11:50pm

That was quick! Last week, Square Enix said that Legend of Mana would be released as a PSOne Classic sometime “soon,” but we didn’t expect to see it this week. The game will be up on PlayStation Network this Tuesday.

In case you missed the news, Parasite Eve II is on its way to PSN, too. We don’t know for sure when that’s coming, but The 3rd Birthday releases next week on March 29th in the U.S.

I really enjoyed Legend of Mana when it first released, I may dig it out of my closet and play it after Ar Tonelico Qoga and Yakuza 4.

    • Which of the two are you playing? I started with Yakuza 4, but then figured I’d finish Ar Tonelico first since I was so absorbed in the side missions in Y4.

      • Arcm

I’ve actually been going back and fourth just got done with Akiyama in Yakuza 4, and I’m just about done with the 2nd Phase in ATQ.

    • Kunio_kun

“Liked” just for the Nall avatar…
Did you ever finish Legend of Mana? After investing 100 hours doing all the side quests, the anticlimactic ending pissed me off…

      • Arcm

Yeah, a lot of games I tend to put a ton of time into always have lackluster endings.

Breath of Fire 3 and 4 come to mind they are favorites of mine but the endings were lack luster. : (

I think my favorite endings would have to be Xenogears or FF9.

  • Now if we can only get a official seiken densetsu 3 release.

    • That would be the day.

      • Zero_Destiny

    • defiance777

      that would be nice

  • Oh great. I have something to finally play to keep me busy

  • FUUUUUUUUUUU-! I’m so busy with Lord of Arcana, Gods Eater Burst, and Parasite Eve, and then I’ll be busy with the soon-to-be-released Dissidia 012, and now this?! My spring break is not enough! >:/

    • Kunio_kun

God Eater?!? That’s not by Square!!! Drop it from yr playlist so that it looks completely uniform…

  • HarryHodd

PS3 really is the jrpg machine. Will buy this and save it away for a rainy day.

    • SolidusSnake

      You mean PSP, right?

      • PSX games bought on PSN work on both PSP and PS3.

        …that’s a lot of PSes.

      • HarryHodd

Nope, I play these on my PS3.

  • kupomogli

This is the last good one before the series went downhill.

Combat system was by far the best in the series and I especially liked how much they really had to offer with the game. Pet system, Golem creation system which you construct the AI, extremely in depth blacksmithing system, an option to change all enemy levels to a few levels higher or max them out, etc, etc. You can even invite a friends character to play through the game with you and they can even save their data so they keep collected exp.

    • Kunio_kun

Don’t forget the cross-save compatibility with SaGa Frontier 2 and I think FF8 and/or one of the Chocobo series… Can’t remember if LoM had Pocketstation functionality or not; just remember my Pocketstation came with the LoM insert and battery… Kinda funny I’ve still got that promo wrapped and the preorder OST sampler but sold LoM after the ending pissed me off with it’s abrupt halt…

  • Testsubject909

    *Clears his throat*

it’s been a while, but I think this should work…

Dub. Duba Duda Dubba, Dub? Gugu Dubba Duda Duba, Dub? Dubababa Budu Dubba! Dub!

    • kupomogli

At first I thought you were mimicking the part from Shaun of the Dead, but then realized it was the dudbears.

      • Testsubject909

If you want. I can give you a clear translation of everything I said…

Or you could just pop open gamefaqs and search for the dudbear translation faq.

  • SolidusSnake

Eh, this game disappointed me. Nice style of visuals and combat system, but the story left a lot to be desired. Actually, I think this is more or less where I started becoming disillusioned with SquareSoft. It wasn’t bad, but all I could say after playing it was “meh.”

    • fallen

You’re not alone. Presentation-wise, it was outstanding… but I found the gameplay horrendously slow and boring. “Disillusioned” is exactly the word I’d have used to describe my own sentiments.

  • puchinri

I was waiting for this. That is way sooner than expected, but awesome news. Now I just hope to see Threads of Fate and Vagrant Story.
(Or do we already have Vagrant Story? If am ashamed.)

    • We do, although not sure if it’s EU PSN only or available in US too.

      • puchinri

Ohhh. I guess I gotta hook up my PS3 and check. Thanks~.

  • God, but this game is beautiful. And as I’ve grown older I’ve come to appreciate its segmented vignettes that are all thematically linked yet self-sufficient and bursting at the seams with diversity, from archaeological excavations to lovers’ quarrels to crackpot detective investigations.

Not to say it didn’t have its flaws, of course, like the hit detection (dear god almighty) and the “My First RPG” default difficulty. In hindsight, I suspect it’s the SaGa enthusiast in me that appreciates Legend of Mana’s quirky, needlessly obtuse subsystems and open-ended nature, not the Mana fan.

    • neo_firenze

Completely agree that there’s something very compelling to a SaGa fan about Legend of Mana. The open-endedness, quirkiness, and anthology-like approach to the quests is very SaGa. I personally adore it, just as I love the SaGa series (which is a different sort of love than I have for most games that I’m into… hard to explain precisely, but there’s something unique there).

  • Man. First Parasite Eve and now Parasite Eve 2 and Legend of Mana. It can only get better if Legend of Dragoon makes its way to the USA PSN next!

    • PrinceHeir

yes Legend of Dragoon please :)

can’t wait for Parasite Eve II, currently playing Parasite Eve I. soo addicting :)

more PSN games please, Suikoden II, Chrono Cross, Tomba I and II, Dino Crisis 2 would be a fresh start :D

      • Oh my god yes for Tomba 1&2 I didn’t think anyone else knew those games! I loved Chrono Cross as well. We should make a petition or something for these games and send them to Sony!

        • PrinceHeir

i agree, but the tomba one can be difficult, since the company already dissolve and the members went to access games which created Deadly Premonition and had a worked on Lord of Arcana to name a few.

sony needs this games on PSN :P

      • Draparde

Suikoden II yesplease! X_x i wana complete my collection!

  • Croix

This is…beautiful! These releases are practically swarming the NA PSN. I can’t wait to see the positive reaction to Chrono Cross’s inevitable announcement (because it would be quite the blunder not to announce it).

  • Zero_Destiny

Can’t wait to play the game again. :D

  • Not as good as Secret- what is? -but I enjoyed it quite a bit. Sometimes I miss games that give you that much to do and very little clue as to how to do it.

  • kyuketsukimiyu

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! My weekend is now officially reserved for a LoM marathon!

  • Draparde

this has to be my favorite game of the series, loved how much you could do in the game, i’ll be getting this for sure!

    • Testsubject909

It was truly overwhelming, the freedom you had and despite having no clear route to take when you’d first pop it in, it all felt somehow cohesive enough that you’d want to move forward as you saw the stories of characters move forward…

      Ah Pearl… Fond memories…

  • defiance777

i wonder if enough people buy this game and show alot of interest, if SE would make a new one for the ps3 or psp.

  • Never played this. I think I should.
